Historic Preservation Law In A Nutshell, Sara Bronin, Ryan Rowberry 2013 University of Connecticut

Historic Preservation Law In A Nutshell, Sara Bronin, Ryan Rowberry

Sara C. Bronin

The purpose of this book is to provide a concise, coherent reference for the emerging field of historic preservation law for lawyers, policymakers, planners, architects, and students alike. We consider preservation law to be “emerging” because it began to fully develop in the United States only in the last fifty years. Two key transition points happened at the federal level: the 1966 passage of the National Historic Preservation Act and the 1978 Penn Central Supreme Court decision, which upheld a landmarks law against a constitutional challenge and consequently encouraged other localities to adopt similar ordinances. (Of course, this book covers …

Uno Team Plots Lots As Land Use Debate Unfurls In Treme, Derreck Blake Deason 2013 University of New Orleans

Uno Team Plots Lots As Land Use Debate Unfurls In Treme, Derreck Blake Deason

Derreck Blake Deason

Advocates for rejuvenating the Treme now have a blueprint to work from. A team with the University of New Orleans mapped out almost every parcel in the historic neighborhood to show which blocks are flourishing and which could use some extra TLC. The report, released Monday, lays out the groundwork for the Historic Faubourg Treme Association to point to as it pushes back against city-sanctioned demolitions of decaying houses or should it advocate for the removal of Interstate 10 above Claiborne Avenue. "We can use this data to help make our community a better place for residents and property owners, …

Improving Energy Benchmarking With Self-Reported Data, David Hsu 2013 University of Pennsylvania

Improving Energy Benchmarking With Self-Reported Data, David Hsu

David Hsu

Energy benchmarking for buildings has become increasingly important in government policy and industry practice for energy efficiency. The questions of how energy benchmarking is currently conducted, and how it might be improved using rapidly growing quantities of self-reported data, are examined. A case study of commercial office buildings in New York City demonstrates how the rapid growth in self-reported data presents both new opportunities and challenges for energy benchmarking for buildings. A critique is presented for the scoring methodology and data sources for Energy Star, one of the largest and most successful benchmarking certification schemes. Findings from recent studies are …

Art, Public Spaces And Private Property Along The Streets In New Orleans, Renia Ehrenfeucht 2013 University of New Orleans

Art, Public Spaces And Private Property Along The Streets In New Orleans, Renia Ehrenfeucht

Renia Ehrenfeucht

In this article, I investigate how and why a street art controversy that emerged in post- Katrina New Orleans was transformed from a dispute over property transgressions to a broader struggle over the meanings of art amidst the city’s devastated condition. The controversy began when a street art initiative by the New Orleans artist Rex Dingler invoked a backlash of anti-graffiti activism. In response, local artists began painting on the walls. When the locals were joined by artists from different cities, the discussion intensified about the merits of street art as well as commentary on and reflection of a city …

Given the increased problem of sedentary behaviour within the workplace and the associated health risks, there is a need to understand the ability for office design to support increased activity during the workday. This paper presents an overview of methods and methodologies that have the potential to provide an understanding of the relationship between people’s physical activity and office settings. In recent years rapid technological developments have improved our ability to quantitatively map people’s movement within buildings. Simultaneously there is an increasing articulation of architectural contexts as consisting of not only the physical space but also lived experience. This paper …

An Investigation Into Psychological Stress Detection And Management In Organisations Operating In Project And Construction Management, Alan Patching, Rick Best 2013 Bond University

An Investigation Into Psychological Stress Detection And Management In Organisations Operating In Project And Construction Management, Alan Patching, Rick Best

Rick Best

While psychologists remain divided whether ‘workplace stress’ is caused by workplace experiences or other factors, it’s commonly accepted that, regardless of cause, people experiencing stress can demonstrate decreased workplace performance. From a human performance and productivity perspective, from whence stress arises is somewhat irrelevant–the relevant fact is that it’s far more important to have systems and procedures in place to contribute to avoidance of undue work environment caused stress. It is also important to identify when an employee is exhibiting signs of stress than it is to focus only on remedial measures for when stress effects have already taken their …

The Claiborne Corridor: Mid-Anchor Business Profiles 2014, Derreck Blake Deason

Derreck Blake Deason

The New Orleans Business Alliance and the Mayor’s Office of Place-based Planning are working closely with the Livable Claiborne Communities Initiatives to encourage the maintenance, development and expansion of businesses throughout the city with a special focus on the LCC. The reports that follow identify mid-anchor businesses that have contributed to the social and economic wealth of the City of New Orleans for, in some cases, hundreds of years. The hope is that these businesses will be supported through new City initiatives to improve façades, marketability and expand employment opportunities. The research and resources provided by the students at UNO …

Post-Disaster Housing Recovery: The Promise And Peril Of Social Capital, Anuradha Mukherji 2013 East Carolina University

Post-Disaster Housing Recovery: The Promise And Peril Of Social Capital, Anuradha Mukherji

Anuradha Mukherji

Researchers argue that social networks based on shared values, trust, and norms can facilitate collective action, and such social capital increases the ability of communities to recover after a disaster, implying that the presence of social capital ensures collective community action after a disaster and enables recovery. Drawing from comparative case studies of Bhuj and Bachhau, urban centres impacted by the 2001 Gujarat earthquake in India, this study presents a nuanced view of the role of social capital during post-disaster recovery. It argues that it is important to consider community contexts that are inherent to the amount of social capital …

Climate Considerations For Facades, Ajla Aksamija 2013 University of Massachusetts - Amherst

Climate Considerations For Facades, Ajla Aksamija

Ajla Aksamija

Facades are one of the most significant contributors to the energy budget and the comfort parameters of any building, and their designs and performance are essential factors for sustainable, energy-efficient, high-performance buildings. Basic methods for designing high-performance building facades include: orienting and developing geometry and massing of the building to respond to solar position, providing solar shading to control cooling loads and improve thermal comfort, using natural ventilation to reduce cooling loads and enhance air quality, minimizing energy used for artificial lighting and mechanical cooling and heating by optimizing exterior wall insulation and the use of daylighting. This article includes …

The Functional Compatibility Of An Outdoor Campus Environment And User’S Sense Of Restoration, Zahra Zamani 2013 Selected Works

The Functional Compatibility Of An Outdoor Campus Environment And User’S Sense Of Restoration, Zahra Zamani

Zahra Zamani

Restorative environments reduce stress levels, promote positive moods, enhance recovery, and increase attention spans (Berto, 2005; Hartig, Mang, & Evans, 1991; Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989; Ulrich, 1993). A particular characteristic of a restorative environment associates with its degree of compatibility in which the physical environment fits the individual’s preferences functions (Kaplan, 1995). Preschool Children's Play Opportunities And Outdoor Learning Environments: Association Between Various Elements And Cognitive Play Behaviors, Zahra Zamani 2013 Selected Works

Preschool Children's Play Opportunities And Outdoor Learning Environments: Association Between Various Elements And Cognitive Play Behaviors, Zahra Zamani

Zahra Zamani

The provision of certain environmental features can forester, or hinder children’s play behavior opportunities within outdoor preschool environments. Additionally, natural environments provide diverse spaces that can stimulate children’s imagination, learning, and interaction. However, limited research has explored the association between children’ cognitive play behavior and the provided elements or behavior settings within outdoor learning environments. This study aimed to understand the potentiality of natural elements incorporated in outdoor preschool settings for children’s cognitive play incitement. Read more...

Examining The Methods For Investigating Behavioral Clues Of Special Schooled Children, Hazreena Hussein, Md Nasir Daud 2013 Universiti Malaya

Examining The Methods For Investigating Behavioral Clues Of Special Schooled Children, Hazreena Hussein, Md Nasir Daud

Hazreena Hussein

This paper discusses the authors’ use of a combination of methods to understand the engagement of special needs children with design features in sensory gardens of two schools in Britain. In addition to observation and behavior mapping, the authors interviewed landscape architects, teachers and therapists to anticipate the children’s behavior when experiencing sensory gardens. We report how these groups’ anticipations differed from what we observed. While the groups anticipated that aesthetic value relates significantly to users’ behavior in the garden, we observed that sensory value has a stronger bearing on the behavior. The potential of this finding is important for …

Hazreena Hussein

Successful implementation of bioclimatic design strategies not only reduces energy use, but more importantly increases the resident’s satisfaction. A Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE), a form of survey method was used in assessing the satisfaction and perception of residents in two residential colleges, at the University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Both CS-A and CS-B represent the uppermost and moderate implementation of bioclimatic design strategies. The results showed that 414 questionnaires were retrieved fully filled by occupants at CS-A while 155 respondents from CS-B returned their questionnaire. The questionnaire was based on a five-point Likert scale. Respondents were asked to rate the levels …

Landscape And Sustainability: Three Residential College Buildings In The Tropics, Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin, Ati Rosemary Mohd Ariffin, Nila Keumala Daud, Hazreena Hussein

Hazreena Hussein

Three residential colleges located in a university campus at the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and built in different decades were selected for landscape studies with respect to species and position of the trees, as well as the effects of the current landscapes as a shelter in reducing solar radiation on buildings, as a pre-assessment for the Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) and assessment system. These landscape settings were carefully studied through on-site observation. The name and location of the mature trees were redrawn and visualised with standard normal photographs. These studies revealed that the old residential college landscape is …
