Imagining Possibilities For Healthy Appalachian Communities In An Emerging Postindustrial Landscape, Brian Hoey
Brian A. Hoey, Ph.D.
This paper explores how community might be re-imagined to promote incipient social and economic agendas born increasingly of broad-minded citizen initiatives within the Appalachian region aimed at what is generally understood as “development,” but of a form distinct from the prevailing models of a more industrial age. I would like to ask whether a city like Huntington, West Virginia can emerge as a progressive example of what we might term postindustrial, urban regeneration and perhaps what we might call community healing—specifically through grassroots movement now finding local governmental support in collective attempts to transform this place from one defined primarily …

In the early twentieth century, informed by an educational theory that meaningful experience is deeply embedded in sensory learning, open air school reformers set about creating deep learning experiences for children. They suggested that children should be exposed to nature, in order to contribute to their health, well-being and learning processes. Bad air remained a pervasive indicator of poor health, and to support the healthy benefits of fresh air, reformers openly called on parents and teachers to become ‘open-air crusaders.’ The public pressure to give children access to fresh air was on. The debate that ensued focused on the specification …

Abstract Space: The Impact Of The Rational Paradigm Of Local And State Plans On Informal Settlements., 2014 Iowa State University
Abstract Space: The Impact Of The Rational Paradigm Of Local And State Plans On Informal Settlements., Silvina Lopez Barrera
Silvina Lopez Barrera
Today, rural areas of Mercedes/Soriano in western Uruguay are facing changes related to rural-urban migration and the development of industrial agriculture. As a result of rural migration, economic crises, labor issues, and other critical problems, the outskirts of Mercedes began to be appropriated by squatters. In the last few years different strategic plans and policies carried out by governments at multiple levels have attempted to regularize and relocate some of the informal settlements. Using Lefebvre’s (1991) theory of space, this study explores how plans under the rational paradigm have transformed the spatial practice of informal settlements in Mercedes, Uruguay. Rationality …
Spatial Transformations In Mercedes (Uruguay): Representation Of Industrial Agriculture Growth And Informal Settlements., 2014 Iowa State University
Spatial Transformations In Mercedes (Uruguay): Representation Of Industrial Agriculture Growth And Informal Settlements., Maria Silvina Lopez Barrera
Silvina Lopez Barrera
Using Lefebvre's theory of space, this study describes the interaction between landscape transformations and the increasing financial investments from agriculture industries in Mercedes, Uruguay. I gathered secondary data and produced analytical maps to understand the recent changes produced in the urban- rural space of Mercedes. I also had informal conversations with local and national government staff about plans and policies. The interaction between plans, policies, and foreign investments related to industrial agriculture and social mobility has created new orders and spaces in the city. The most vulnerable sectors of the society have not benefited from these new orders in space. …

Impact Of Sustainable Cool Roof Technology On Building Energy Consumption, 2014 Portland State University
Impact Of Sustainable Cool Roof Technology On Building Energy Consumption, Prem Kiran Vuppuluri
Dissertations and Theses
Highly reflective roofing systems have been analyzed over several decades to evaluate their ability to meet sustainability goals, including reducing building energy consumption and mitigating the urban heat island. Studies have isolated and evaluated the effects of climate, surface reflectivity, and roof insulation on energy savings, thermal load mitigation and also ameliorating the urban heat island. Other sustainable roofing systems, like green-roofs and solar panels have been similarly evaluated. The motivation for the present study is twofold: the first goal is to present a method for simultaneous evaluation and inter-comparison of multiple roofing systems, and the second goal is to …
La Ciudad Y Su Gobierno En América Latina, 2014 FLACSO, Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales. Sede Ecuador

Method And System For Optimal Coordination Control And Soft Repair Of Multiple Rooftop Heating And Cooling Units, 2014 University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Method And System For Optimal Coordination Control And Soft Repair Of Multiple Rooftop Heating And Cooling Units, Haorong Li
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Faculty Publications
Techniques are described that may be implemented in an adaptive control device to regulate multiple zone environmental units based upon multiple temperature values and multiple airflow values, where each temperature value and each airflow value is related to the temperature and the airflow in a specific zone. In an implementation, the input interface of the adaptive control device is configured to receive multiple temperature values and multiple air flow values from multiple zone sensors. The adaptive control device may calculate multiple operational values based on the multiple temperature values and the multiple air flow values. An operational value indicates a …

Improving Flexibility To Increase Housing Affordability, Russell L. Pandres
School of Public Policy Capstones
This paper utilizes Census Bureau and USPS-HUD data sets to examine the relationship between address vacancy and percent of residents who are housing cost burden at the Census Tract level. This research determines there is a statistically significant positive linear relationship for four of the six New England States. Additionally, I examine spatial autocorrelation patterns among the residuals to determine if error term is clustered, dispersed, or random. Finally, I compare my results to how building codes disincentive rehabilitating buildings and incentivize greenfield development. I offer a number of policy suggestions to assist at the local, state, and Federal level …
A Comparison Of American, Canadian, And European Home Energy Performance In Heating Dominated – Moist Climates Based On Building Codes, 2014 University of Massachusetts Amherst
A Comparison Of American, Canadian, And European Home Energy Performance In Heating Dominated – Moist Climates Based On Building Codes, Stephanie M. Berkland
Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014
This research compares the energy performance of a code-built residential building within the moist climate zone classification in Canada, Europe, and the Northeastern United States. The primary objectives are to reveal how specific differences in code requirements in similar climates influence a building’s energy profile, offer a means to quantify and evaluate the extent of energy savings as a result of each requirement, and provide a comparison of each location’s building culture and how this affects the standards in place.
Using the building energy simulation tool, DesignBuilder EnergyPlus Simulation, a model single-family home was created and input energy code …

Research
The Tan Brook is a small 3.91 square kilometer watershed that runs through and encompasses the highly urbanized areas of Amherst, MA. It is part of the Connecticut River basin and the Mill River sub-basin. In order to meet the high demands of the local middle and high school, and heavy runoff from high amounts of impervious cover from downtown Amherst and the University of Massachusetts, the Tan Brook has been highly culverted.
The Environmental Condition Of Tan Brook And Campus Pond, A Community And University Concern, 2014 University of Massachusetts - Amherst
The Environmental Condition Of Tan Brook And Campus Pond, A Community And University Concern, Marita Clay, Robert F. Smith
Research
Small streams have the unfortunate ability to be greatly impacted by human intervention. Civilizations for centuries have attempted to alter the natural state of their environment, and Amherst's own Tan Brook is a local example of the consequences of human alterations on a stream. The brook flows over and under what many local citizens call home, and where many UMass students go to learn. A healthier Tan Brook would be expected to provide for improvement of ecosystem services such as flood control and nutrient processing, resulting in a cleaner campus pond and a better connection between the stream and the …
