Using Photogrammetry To Document, Analyze, And Reverse-Engineer Grave Markers, Robert Z. Selden Jr. 2015 Center for Regional Heritage Research, Stephen F. Austin State University

Using Photogrammetry To Document, Analyze, And Reverse-Engineer Grave Markers, Robert Z. Selden Jr.

CRHR: Archaeology

There are a wide range of applications for three-dimensional (3D) data in archaeology, and a diverse array of methods for collecting and analyzing those data. In this article, free 3D photogrammetry software (Autodesk 123D Catch) is used to document a series of grave markers. The data are subsequently exported to Geomagic Design X to demonstrate and briefly discuss the various potential analyses that might be used to illustrate the effects of preservation treatments and marker degradation through time. Further, one marker is reverse-engineered, illustrating the capacity of 3D modeling to expedite the process of design, should elements warrant replacement. Additional …

Evaluating The Vegetation Recovery In The Damage Area Of Wenchuan Earthquake Using Modis Data, Wei-Guo Jiang, Kai Jia, Jian-Jun Wu, Zhenghong Tang, Wen-Jie Wang, Xiao-Fu Liu 2015 Beijing Normal University

Evaluating The Vegetation Recovery In The Damage Area Of Wenchuan Earthquake Using Modis Data, Wei-Guo Jiang, Kai Jia, Jian-Jun Wu, Zhenghong Tang, Wen-Jie Wang, Xiao-Fu Liu

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The catastrophic 8.0 Richter magnitude earthquake that occurred on 12 May 2008 in Wenchuan, China caused extensive damage to vegetation due to widespread landslides and debris flows. In the past five years, the Chinese government has implemented a series of measures to restore the vegetation in the severely afflicted area. How is the vegetation recovering? It is necessary and important to evaluate the vegetation recovery effect in earthquake-stricken areas. Based on MODIS NDVI data from 2005 to 2013, the vegetation damage area was extracted by the quantified threshold detection method. The vegetation recovery rate after five years following the earthquake …

Accounting For The Short Term Substitution Effects Of Walking And Cycling In Sustainable Transportation, Daniel P. Piatkowski, Kevin J. Krizek, Susan L. Handy 2015 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Accounting For The Short Term Substitution Effects Of Walking And Cycling In Sustainable Transportation, Daniel P. Piatkowski, Kevin J. Krizek, Susan L. Handy

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

The environmental benefits of bicycling and walking depend on the degree to which their use substitutes for car driving. Assuming that every walking and bicycling trip replaces a driving trip is likely to produce overestimates of the potential for such modes to reduce vehicle travel and city-scale greenhouse gas emissions. Measuring this ‘‘substitution effect’’ is not straightforward. There are many dimensions of the substitution effect, including trip type, substituting mode, extent, time horizon, and activity patterns. Previously used approaches to measure substitution include indirect inference and direct questioning. This study piloted an intercept survey using the direct questioning approach at …

The Dynamics Of Daylighting At A Residential College Building With The Internal Courtyard Arrangement, Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin 2015 Universiti Malaya

The Dynamics Of Daylighting At A Residential College Building With The Internal Courtyard Arrangement, Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin

Adi Ainurzaman Jamaludin

Dayasari residential college building was designed with the internal courtyard that allows for numerous implementations of bioclimatic design strategies, especially on daylighting. The field measurement was conducted at eight unoccupied student rooms, selected as samples to represent ten scenarios and orientations that concerned with the level of radiation and penetration of sunlight. This study reveals the contribution of the internal courtyard in the residential college which allows the daylight penetration at the corridor areas and interior of the rooms through the transom over the entrance door, up to ten hours daily. Different amounts of daylight were measured in specific room …

Intersectionality And Planning At The Margins: Lgbtq Youth Of Color In New York, Clara Irazabal, Claudia Huerta 2015 Columbia University

Intersectionality And Planning At The Margins: Lgbtq Youth Of Color In New York, Clara Irazabal, Claudia Huerta

Clara Irazabal

Through an intersectional lens, this article reflects on the dialog between planning and gender, feminist, and queer studies to analyze the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth of color (YOC) community in New York City (NYC). The community is subject to multiple disenfranchisements, given their ethno-racial status, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation. This community's limited access to safe public spaces and amenities, housing, health services, job training, and other opportunities is an urban planning challenge insufficiently understood or addressed. Our methodology includes participant observation and analysis of an LGBTQ YOC tour of West Village in NYC, interviews …

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler 2015 Associate Professor at Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies (LUCSUS)

Mainstreaming Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Transformation Toward Sustainability In Urban Governance And Planning, Christine Wamsler

Christine Wamsler

The concept of ecosystem-based adaptation is advocated at international, national, and regional levels. The concept is thought to foster sustainability transitions and is receiving increasing interest from academic and governmental bodies alike. However, there is little theory regarding the pathways for its systematic implementation. It furthermore remains unclear to what degree the concept is already applied in urban planning practice, how it is integrated into existing planning structures and processes, and what drivers exist for further integration. Against this background, this study examines potential ways to sustainably mainstream ecosystembased adaptation into urban planning. Eight municipalities in Southern Germany were investigated …

Sustainable Urban Open Green Spaces: Opportunities And Challenges, Mehdi Rakhshandehroo, Mohd Johari Mohd Yusof, Osman Mohd Tahir, Mohd Yazid Mohd Yunos

mrakhshandehroo@yahoo.com

Shortage of open green spaces has become a common concern in today’s compact cities. Based on the literature review, urban open green spaces provide different dimensions of sustainability because of opportunities for social, environmental, and economic benefits which contribute to quality of life in cities. Urban development and renewal should be accompanied with a greening vision, to insert more plantable spaces into the urban fabric. Therefore sustainable urban planning, design and management are needed to improve urban greening strategy. In order to enhance urban greenery, innovative and creative ideas should be applied in urban management, for instance informal open green …
