Hatfield Community Center: Hatfield, Massachusetts, Patrick Dominov 2010 Roger Williams University

Hatfield Community Center: Hatfield, Massachusetts, Patrick Dominov

Architecture Theses

The goal of the project is to create a building that can be as active as possible throughout the day and evening. This can be done by finding a variety of users to occupy the building for different times of the day. In addition, creating multipurpose spaces will allow the building to stay smaller in size; a space in the building can take on multiple functions. Bringing in the entire community to this building is what will make the building successful. The building will be designed with the entire community in mind; young, middle-age, and elderly, not just a specific …

Youth Perspectives On Community Assets And Geography In Puyallup, Wa, Nathan Stueve

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:Youth poses a perspective of their communities that is unique, but not always acknowledged. The goal of this project was to examine how teenage residents in suburban Puyallup, WA perceive their surroundings. Some theoretical assumptions exist in background literature on this issue. Firstly, planners often design communities to prevent youth from engaging in deconstructive activities, not to allow them to engage in constructive activities. As a result, communities are often designed with fewer youth-oriented assets and venues. Fewer youth-oriented places to travel to will cause teens to be less physically active. In addition, youth perceptions of access to these …

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction: The Tacoma Business Improvement Area was established in 1988 and is a not-for-profit organization with a 501(c)(4) status (Tacoma BIA, 2010). The boundary encompasses an 84 block radius in the Downtown Tacoma Area including 502 parcels. The BIA is dependent on taxation from business owners within the area, and functions under the direction of a board of directors also known as the Local Development Council (Tacoma BIA, 2010). Assessing Senior Citizen Livability In Dyes Inlet Neighborhoods: Elder Livability Index And Walkable Bus Stops, Garrett Jackson

GIS Certificate Projects

Introduction:The aim of this project is to suggest to local officials where social services for elders would best be applied and also to act as an assistive tool for seniors seeking residence in neighborhoods where high levels of livability are experienced. This analysis is based on the assertion that the location, age, and condition of one’s home can be an indicator to whether an individual possesses the assets and advantages needed toage successfully. As of 2009 there were 112 million households in the United States and a full 23% contained a resident 60 years of age or older (Pynoos …

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Relationship Between Quality Of Life And Leed-Nd Certified / Certifiable Neighborhoods, Stephanie Nicole Timm

Master's Theses

The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed a rating system that examines the sustainability of neighborhoods. They have specifically stated that that LEED-ND certified neighborhoods will protect and enhance residents’ overall health, the natural environment, and quality of life. This study uses relevant quality of life indicators that are commonly identified by social scientists as accurate interpreters of the various quality of life domains to determine if there is, in fact, a relationship between LEED-ND and quality of life. Four of the ten domains examined were found to be related to LEED-ND certified/certifiable neighborhoods, thus, to a certain …

Alternative Methods And Forums To Optimize Public Participation In The Planning Process, Joseph James David 2010 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Alternative Methods And Forums To Optimize Public Participation In The Planning Process, Joseph James David

Master's Theses

“Public participation” takes on various forms in the realm of local government planning. Many planners stand behind the ideal of involving community, but participation in practice often fails to achieve this objective. The primary vehicle for local government participation is the public hearing, which is a formalized process that often elicits one-way communication from planner to public. The nature of a hearing is to inform the public about development applications or policy changes, expose governing body decisions to the public, and elicit reactions from interested members of the public. Significant effort is taken daily by local planning departments to promote …
