Bone Traces And Modifications From Feeding By Dermestes Maculatus, B. V. Adams, Leon G. Higley

That Dermestes maculatus feeding can leave marks on bones is established in the literature - that D. maculatus routinely mark bones is not. Our results here, exposing fleshed bones to D. maculatus adults and immatures for almost two months after complete tissue removal, indicate that under natural conditions D. maculatus do not feed on bones. The key issue seems to be the ability of D. maculatus to seek new food sources versus being confined (and eventually starving) on bones. This work presents a background on the chemical complexity of fire debris analysis, including an ever-present matrix of pyrolysis products as the catalyst that led to the creation of the National Center for Forensic Science's Fire Debris Database. A selection of these 1,000+ casework-relevant ground truth samples was used to create two newly proposed analyst workflows to connect the current method of categorical reporting with evaluative reporting practices reflective of the strength of the evidence. Although there has been recent focus on child welfare to prevent removals, little literature has examined reasons children are removed among diverse developmental stages. The present study explores the multifaceted demographics of children in the foster care system in order to recognize who is being affected by what removal causes. The purpose of this study is to better understand the foster care system to target interventions and screenings for children under eighteen years of age in the United States. The objective of this dissertation is to understand develop an understanding of experiences of online romance scam¹(ORS) victimization and to examine factors associated with ORS victimization. The dissertation samples ORS victims and uses purposive sampling strategies to recruit participants. The research used a mixed methods explanatory design approach. Inclusion criteria included ORS victims 18 and older who lived in the U.S., lost any amount of money in ORS scam, and met the scammer on any Internet platform. The State of Texas supports the largest prison system in the US and held 132,859 people in 100 units scattered across the state as of December 2023. Approximately 70% of Texas prison beds are not air conditioned, despite the state’s reputation for dangerously hot, humid summers. The State has officially recorded temperatures inside Texas prison facilities as high as 120 degrees with heat index values of over 150. Around 60% of all crimes in Japan are committed by repeat offenders, and therefore preventing recidivism is a central concern in Japan. Recognizing the importance of early intervention, some prosecutors’ offices collaborate with social workers and provide necessary measures for recidivism prevention when prosecution is suspended. To promote prosecutor-led recidivism prevention, there is an ongoing discussion to legislate the approach currently taken by prosecutors’ offices. However, concerns remain about procedural fairness, transparency of prosecutorial discretion, and collaboration with other agencies. Employing an exploratory sequential research design, including focus groups and an online survey, this thesis explores the factors influencing how Japanese people navigate the gray zones of sexual consent. This study not only addresses gaps in the literature on sexual consent but also provides a preliminary understanding of Japanese individuals’ perceptions, beliefs, behaviors, and experiences in ambiguous sexual interactions, which is particularly meaningful given Japan’s recent legal revisions and changing sociocultural landscape. Findings indicated the impact of traditional sexual scripts on consent perceptions, with gender and relationship norms contributing to the dismissal of sexual assaults within specific relationships. The professional life of Hattie Plum Williams (1878–1963) epitomized the first generation of professional women sociologists on the Great Plains. At the University of Nebraska, she became the first woman in the world known to hold a regular appointment as chair of a coeducational, doctoral department of sociology (1923–1928). Often characterized as a social worker, her professional allegiance remained to sociology. The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army (Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from Nazi German occupation. It began on August 1, 1944, and lasted 63 days, as the poorly equipped resistance fought against well-armed German forces. The Soviet Red Army, stationed across the Vistula River, offered no significant aid, leaving the insurgents isolated. The uprising was brutally suppressed, resulting in approximately 200,000 Polish civilian and combatant deaths. Warsaw was left in ruins, and the city’s population was forcibly expelled. Proposed regulations for alcohol advertising prevent beverage companies from targeting people under the legal drinking age. However, similar regulations for alcohol alternative beverages are less explored, which could allow alcohol alternative products to create awareness for alcoholic beverages among youth. Young people who have committed a sexual offence present unique and serious challenges to the criminal justice systems of Australia and New Zealand. To understand the current state of existing literature, we systematically collated and critically appraised studies using narrative synthesis, examining the recidivism outcomes of young people who have committed a sexual offence and received treatment. Eight studies were identified utilising a sample of 1528 young people. Recidivism was higher among participants who did not complete treatment, compared to those who completed treatment, but highest in those who commenced but subsequently “dropped out”. Our findings highlight a need for …

Forensic Archaeology Protocols for Wildfires and Fire-Related Scenes

Forensic archaeology is a relatively new area of study and focuses on the medical legal aspects of archaeology. This paper will focus on how forensic archaeology should be used for wildfire and other fire-related fatalities or investigations, what happens to bone when exposed to heat, what protocols should be in place and how an excavation should look, and finally the challenges of fire-related investigations. This report will focus on the larger scale of the investigation and will be using several sources from different wildfire and fire fatality reports.

Following the Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals (1993) ruling three decades ago, guidelines were established for determining the reliability and validity of expert testimony in court. These guidelines include considerations of whether the theory and methodologies employed have been tested, the establishment of potential or known error rates, and the existence and maintenance of the standards (Christensen, 2004). Testifying in court as an expert witness has become a critical role as a forensic anthropologist. เหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงที่เกิดขึ้นในประเทศไทยสร้างความสูญเสีย ส่งผลกระทบต่อสังคมอย่างมาก งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อสร้างฐานข้อมูลของการเกิดเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทย วิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง และเสนอแนะข้อคิดเห็นจากมุมมองทางจิตเวชศาสตร์ ผู้วิจัยทำการศึกษาเชิงพรรณนาแบบย้อนหลังโดยรวบรวมเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2537 - 2566 โดยใช้คำจำกัดความทางวิชาการสากล แล้วเก็บข้อมูลลักษณะทางประชากรและทางคลินิก รวมถึงปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์ ผู้ก่อเหตุและเหยื่อ ผลการวิจัยพบมีเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงเกิดขึ้นรวม 78 ครั้งใน 30 ปีที่ผ่านมา โดยเป็นเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ 65 ครั้ง และเหตุการณ์กราดยิง 49 ครั้ง ผู้ก่อเหตุสังหารหมู่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศชาย (89.23%) ใช้อาวุธปืนก่อเหตุ (66.16%) มีประวัติการใช้สารเสพติด (27.69%) มีประวัติการฝึกใช้ปืน (20%) มีประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชที่มีความเสี่ยงสูงต่อการก่อความรุนแรง (7.7%) มีผู้เสียชีวิต 348 รายจากเหตุการณ์รวมทั้งหมด โดยสรุปคือเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่และกราดยิงในประเทศไทยเกิดขึ้นเป็นประจำและมีแนวโน้มเพิ่มมากขึ้น ปัจจัยสำคัญของเหตุการณ์สังหารหมู่ในประเทศไทยคือการเข้าถึงและฝึกใช้อาวุธปืน ปัญหายาเสพติด ส่วนประวัติโรคทางจิตเวชพบไม่มาก การสร้างฐานข้อมูลและศึกษาเหตุการณ์เหล่านี้ทางวิชาการต่อไป อาจนำไปสู่แนวทางป้องกันที่ดียิ่งขึ้นในอนาคต
