Concepts of Chemical Dependency's 11th edition continues the work of the original author, Harold Doweiko. Dr. Amelia (Amy) Evans revised the 10th and 11th editions, when Doweiko was no longer able to continue his work on this textbook. Used in a variety of undergraduate and graduate departments, the text provides a solid understanding of substance use disorders and covers a variety of relevant topics related to addictions. After introducing the reader to reasons we should all be concerned about substance misuse in society, there is an overview of why individuals may choose to turn to substances and how these substances …

History Untold: A Historical Review Of Psychological Harm Of Racialized Minorities, Coralann M. Garcia, Kyana D. Hamilton
Psychology from the Margins
The legacy of social sciences is riddled with examples of harm toward racial minorities. Since its inception, the field of psychology has enforced power imbalances between researchers and research participants (APA, 2021a). Due to this imbalance, there have been violations of human dignity by psychological researchers from disciplines including social, clinical, cognitive, and counseling psychology (Winston, 2020). As the field of psychology continues to expand, it is necessary to redress the harmful legacies of psychological practices hindering help-seeking behaviors for many minoritized groups. As future practitioners and researchers, we recognize the instrumental role of past and current psychologists in shaping …

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study will be to describe long-term recovery (LTR) from drug addiction for African American (AA) recovering addicts (RAs) who have ten or more years in recovery and are members of Narcotics Anonymous (NA). The theory guiding this study is the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) (Stages of Change) (Prochaska & DiClemente, 1977) as it describes the process of how individuals change their habitual behavior/s by transitioning through five stages of change (precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance,). The Relationship Between Intimacy And Marital Satisfaction In Christian Couples, Lauren Gabriele Amato
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Current literature suggests that a connection exists between intimacy and marital satisfaction; however, much of the research has only focused on non-Christian marriages and sexual intimacy. There is little research that proves how the various types of intimacy and marital satisfaction are related within Christian couples. This quantitative study examined the predictive relationship between intimacy and marital satisfaction in Christian adults. The research focused on the following main research question: (1) Do the six sub-scales of marital intimacy (emotional intimacy, social intimacy, physical intimacy, intellectual intimacy, recreational intimacy, and spiritual intimacy) collectively predict marital satisfaction in Christian couples? It was …

Teaching Queer Trauma: Applying Meditation As A Pedagogy Of Compassion, Kody Muncaster
Feminist Pedagogy
Mindfulness practices can help greatly when teaching potentially triggering courses on queerness and trauma. Meditation allows students to learn how to manage triggers, enhancing their distress tolerance and their ability to fully engage with course material. It also has practical benefits for applied courses, as students will learn how mindfulness practices can help when working with queer and traumatized clients in, for example, a social services setting. This original teaching activity describes a course I taught called 'Queer Trauma and Resilience: Canadian Perspectives,' and outlines several meditations that were taught progressively throughout the course. Debriefing methods are included as well …

Separated By Geographical Location And Lineage: A Case Study Design Using Qualitative Methodology In Research On Hope, Love, And Resilience During A Family Reunion, Cynthia Dee Reece
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Family reunions are extensive functions in the African American community. The family members look forward to seeing one another, year after year, to share on various topics such as births, marriages, weddings, educational accomplishments, employment advancements, as well as deaths that have occurred. Often, some family members cannot attend reunions due to the distance or financial and economic hardships. Geographical location is a major hurdle to overcome when there is a lack of finances. Additionally, a mindset of not being accepted or assured of love in the family due to the perceived lineage of a family member or absence from …

A recurring theme in research on borderline personality disorder (BPD) and childhood trauma was the stigma associated with a BPD diagnosis often resulting in barriers to recovery processes and challenges to treatment for this population. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study focused on the lived experience of licensed clinicians who work with BPD clients, with the aim to find common themes experienced by clinicians regarding clinicians’ BPD clients, what successes and challenges experienced by clinicians led to their attitudes and perspectives toward treating BPD clients, and what perspectives clinicians have regarding what resources (education, training, etc.) are available in …

Efficacy Of Mental Health Interventions For Physicians: A Literature Review, Rebecca Rudolph
Counselor Education Capstones
Medical physicians at all points of their careers, including as medical students, interns, residents, and independent physicians, are more likely than their non-physician peers to experience depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental health issues. A variety of occupation-specific factors could contribute to these issues with no root cause known, and the efficacy of mental health care interventions for this group also remains ambiguous. There seem to be two approaches to the problem - implementing interventions at organizational levels and making individual interventions available. There is not one conclusive answer to systematically improve physician mental health, and different …

In conducting this research, a mixed-method survey was completed by twenty-one …
