The Application Of 4e Cognition To Counseling And The Intersectional Experiences Of Black Individuals With Disabilities, A. Albright, Clarence K. Bumpas, Jeff Moe
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
Black Americans with disabilities experience a range of inequities including barriers to access, social stigmatization, and health outcomes that are greater than both their White and their nondisabled peers. This conceptual article explains in detail these inequities. The authors provide an overview of the existing models of disability used in counseling, healthcare, research, and educational settings, as well as a rationale for why they are limited. The authors then suggest a 4E cognitive framework rooted in cognitive sciences, philosophy of mind, and neuroscience. The authors explain why a 4E cognitive framework may be better suited than existing models to conceptualize …

Problem
Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that presents challenges not only for autistic individuals, but also for their families, healthcare providers and school professionals. A significant number of children with autism spend most of their school day in general education classrooms with teachers who may lack autism-specific training and are unfamiliar with evidence-based practices for supporting autistic students. This lack of training or relevant resources specific to autism may impact teacher self-efficacy for educating autistic students, which in turn may affect instructional decisions and student outcomes. Guided by Bandura’s theoretical framework, this study examined the relationships among autism-specific training …

A Case Of Interpretive Assistance And School Choice Counseling, Jason E. Saltmarsh
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications
Drawing on notions of social capital, insider knowledge embedded in "the grapevine", and the "labor of choice", this study examines interpretive assistance in the context of families' K-12 school decisions. It uses a qualitative case study of NGO navigator services, which provide school choice counselling primarily to low-income families of colour, to develop theoretical propositions related to the characteristics and potential benefits of interpretive assistance. As some researchers and conservative-leaning think tanks call for investing in navigator services, it is important to deepen our understanding of "high-touch" informational supports aimed at mitigating demand-side inequities in school choice.

Parental Stress, Self-Compassion, And Meaning In Life Among Mothers Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hyun-Ju Ju
Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education
Mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience higher levels of parenting stress than mothers of typically developing children or children with other developmental disabilities, which can undermine their psychological well-being. Additionally, parental stress among mothers of children with ASD is influenced by various demographic factors. This study primarily identified the relationship between parental stress and demographic factors. It also examined the correlations among parental stress, self-compassion, and meaning in life of mothers raising children with ASD within a positive psychology context. Finally, this study investigated whether self-compassion mediates the relationship between parenting stress and two distinct dimensions …

Therapist Perspective Of Therapeutic Alliance And Treatment Outcome In Systemic Psychotherapy, Benjamin Larkin Mize Patterson
Theses and Dissertations--Family Sciences
One of the most robust findings in psychotherapy outcome research has been the relationship of a strong therapeutic alliance with improvement in treatment. Most research, however, has measured therapeutic alliance from the client’s point of view, disregarding the therapist’s perspective of this phenomenon. In this naturalistic study of adults in systemic individual, couple, or family psychotherapy (N = 627), both client- and therapist-ratings of alliance were assessed for their associations with treatment outcomes. Multilevel modeling was employed to analyze data from the Marriage and Family Therapy Practice Research Network (MFT-PRN). Client-ratings of the therapeutic alliance and general functioning/relationship satisfaction …

School Counseling District Leaders' Experiences With Anti-Dei Laws And Policies: A Phenomenological Investigation, Emily Goodman-Scott, Darrell J. Sampson, Kaprea F. Johnson, Dehaven Sawyer-Mays
Counseling & Human Services Faculty Publications
School counseling district leaders (SCDLs) are instrumental in shaping district policy, supporting school counselors, and interfacing with both internal and external constituents; as such, their systemic lens is of particular importance, given the K-12 pushback on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) occurring at the state- and district-levels. As a result, we conducted a critical application of Husserl’s phenomenology to understand the collective experience of a sample of SCDLs (N = 10) working in locations with anti-DEI laws and/or policies, specifically those restricting Black, indigenous, and people of color and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning rights and topics. Through the …

High School Counselor Perceptions Of Trauma-Informed Professional Development And Implementation Of Trauma-Informed Practices In Schools, Kimberly Faulkner-Camacho
Theses and Dissertations
This non-experimental phenomenological study aimed to delve into school counselors’ perspectives on what motivates them to participate in trauma-informed professional development, the necessary supports for implementing trauma-informed practices in schools (TIPS), and the barriers that impede implementation. Drawing on situated learning theory and adult learning theory, this study sought to enhance the understanding of school counselors’ views on trauma-informed professional development and implementation. These frameworks offered valuable insights into how to support counselors and shed light on existing barriers. The study involved 10 traditional public high school counselors from non-charter schools in Los Angeles County, selected through snowball and purposive …

Descendants of Africans Enslaved in the United States (DAEUS), who lived in the South prior to 1965 and experienced decades of legalized discrimination, were found to have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Arline Geronimus (1992) coined the term “weathering” to acknowledge the accumulation of racial trauma stored within the body over extended periods of time. The purpose of this interpretive phenomenological study, aligned by the tenets of Critical Race Theory, explores how continuous racial trauma impacted DAEUS citizens’ well-being and trust in the COVID-19 vaccine. Three Group Experiential Themes emerged during this study, all connected with the experiences …

Grief On The Margins: The Death Of A Family Member To Substance Use, Adair Shaw
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Despite Canada's high death rates from substance use, there is limited research on the sociopsychological impact on families, who often face stigma and disenfranchised grief. This study explores how family members make meaning of a substance-related death. Through qualitative inquiry, eleven family members were interviewed on their experience of grief from substance death. The imprint of losing a family member to mental illness and substance use is fraught with intergenerational grief, ambiguity, prolonged mental-emotional distress, and relationship challenges. Substance death was also associated with stigma, social withdrawal, and shame for many participants. However, grievers reconstructed the socially prescribed negative perceptions …

The qualitative research project examines the lived experience of acquired vision loss in adulthood and its impact on the way participants see themselves and the world around them, both sensorially and metaphorically. The research question, “What are the lived experiences of adults with acquired vision loss as they relate to identity and conceptions of self?” is informed by the researcher’s clinical practice as a psychotherapist in a low vision clinic. The dissertation includes a literature review focussed on the psychosocial aspects of vision loss to provide insight into the intended population and context for the study. Data for the phenomenological …
