The Evolution Of Disney Princesses And Their Effect On Body Image, Gender Roles, And The Portrayal Of Love, Rachael Michelle Johnson

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

The media plays an essential role in determining people’s schemas of the real world, assumptions about cultural ideals, and perceptions surrounding body image, gender roles, and the idealization of love (Behm-Morawitz & Mastro, 2008; Herbozo, Tantleff-Dunn, Gokee-Larose, & Thompson, 2004). Children in particular are vulnerable to these messages due to their high consumption of media and their cognitive development (Agarwal & Dhanasekaran, 2012; Herbozo et al., 2004). Disney is one the most powerful aspects in children’s media and their princess phenomenon plays an essential role in perpetuating stereotypes by having their heroines embody submissiveness, being young and thin, and attracting …

Trauma Of The Heart: Augmenting The Family Paradigm To Stem The Spread Of Hiv/Aids And To Facilitate Healing And Recovery In The Wake Of Hiv/Aids, Gibson Danjuma

CTS Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

This article briefly reflects on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the African American community. The article suggests an alternative paradigm that views the high-risk behaviors that contribute to the spread of the virus as a reaction to ‘trauma of the heart’ as opposed to viewing the epidemic solely in terms of a lack of HIV and sexually transmitted disease awareness. It further suggests a pastoral intervention of expanding the paradigm of family beyond the classical nuclear construct to family as a system of individuals committed to embracing and ‘adopting’ individuals who have experienced trauma of the heart. This augmented understanding of …

A qualitative methodology was chosen …

Narrative Identity Development For Novice Psychotherapists In Clinical Training, Dana Michelle Satterlee 2015 George Fox University

Narrative Identity Development For Novice Psychotherapists In Clinical Training, Dana Michelle Satterlee

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Abstract Narrative identity is “the internalized, evolving story of the self that each person crafts to provide his or her life with a sense of purpose and unity” (Adler, 2012, p. 367). This identity is distinct from the broad dispositional traits and the characteristic adaptations for contextualized behaviors. It provides the self with a sense of purpose, meaning, and unity across time and situations (McAdams & Olson, 2010). Researchers have developed ways of measuring innovative moments (IMs), or shifts in narrative identity that occur in psychotherapy. Researchers have also explored narrative identity processing as it seems to occur across the …

Who Chooses My Future? The Role Of Personality And Acculturation In First And Later Generation Immigrant College Students’ Career Decision Making, Gema Gutierrez Alcivar

Honors College Theses

Career choice is often reflected by a student’s choice of major. Personality, vocational interests, and cultural influences are also significant factors in the process of choosing a major. For Latino students, maintaining cultural norms is an important part of career choice, although the influence of cultural norms tends to decrease from first to later generations. The current study examined the influences of acculturation and personality (introversion/extraversion) among 57 Latino/Hispanics students: first-generation immigrant students, those who migrated to the US during childhood/adolescence, and later generation students. We hypothesized that later-generation students are more likely to major in business and social sciences, …

The Effects Of Relationship Satisfaction With Primary Caregivers On Adult Relationship Conflict In Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Tess Stoops 2015 Syracuse University

The Effects Of Relationship Satisfaction With Primary Caregivers On Adult Relationship Conflict In Survivors Of Childhood Abuse, Tess Stoops

Theses - ALL

It has been shown in research that childhood abuse can be detrimental to children and their abilities to cope, function at school, understand social situations, and even to communicate in their adult romantic relationships (Coleman & Widom, 2004; Haskett & Kistner, 1991; Perry, 2009). As a child that has been abused grows and forms relationships as an adult, the abuse can affect these relationships in negative ways (Unger & Luca, 2014; Coleman & Widom, 2004). However, close relationships that provide safety and attunement can help create healthy attachments that foster coping skills to counteract the effects of the abuse (Siegal, …
