Food Stamp Enrollment And Mental Health: An Implicit Tax On The Poor, James Calvin Hasbany

Economics

Objectives. This study examines whether food stamp participation status impacts the mental health of its recipients.

Methods. We use 2017 data from the Michigan Panel Study of Income Dynamics to construct a propensity score model to match treated and control individuals, circumventing inherent selection bias and estimating causal effects.

Results. We find that enrolling in food stamps within the past 30 days increases the frequency of emotional distress over the same timeframe, manifesting specifically in more frequent feelings of sadness, nervousness, hopelessness, ‘everything being an effort,’ and worthlessness.

Conclusions. Food stamp enrollment harms mental health more than it benefits it, …

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacted socio-economic stability and food systems in the U.S. and worldwide. To better understand food access challenges and needs of those significantly impacted by the pandemic, an online survey was distributed in the San Francisco Bay Area from August to November of 2020. A total of 726 participants completed the survey who were recruited through paid Facebook ads and community partners outreach. This report features key results from the survey regarding changes in food security rates, food access challenges, and coping strategies used during the pandemic. Precision technologies such as variable rate fertilizer applications have been touted as solving production agricultural issues, increasing yields, and improving environmental stewardship. Variable rate technologies have been widely available on farms especially via custom service providers; however, utilization rates of these technologies remain relatively low. Low adoption rates indicate barriers to adoption and an opportunity for market expansion. The degree to which such technologies may reduce the demand for fertilizers will depend on VRT adoption rates.

As principal farm operators age, retirement and succession planning has become increasingly important to the U.S. agriculture industry. This study examined differences in the determinants of retirement preparation between farm and nonfarm households using the Survey of Consumer Finances. Factors such as risk preferences, financial capability, human capital, and other demographic characteristics of farmers that may play a role in their decision to plan for retirement were examined. Retirement planning was investigated by running three separate sets of logistic regressions on the overall sample, farm households, and nonfarm households. Cost Efficiency Of International Corn And Soybean Production, Rachel Purdy, Michael Langemeier

The objective of this paper was to examine the cost efficiency of corn and soybean pro-duction for typical farms involved in the cash crop agri benchmark network using data for the period 2013 to 2017. Average cost efficiency for the typical farms in the network that produced corn, soybeans, and both corn and soybeans was 0.749, 0.774, and 0.939, respectively. Inefficiency was a greater problem for the farms producing corn than for the other farm types examined. Inefficient farms tended to overutilize direct, operating, and overhead inputs.

Price determinants for bulls, cows, and feeder cattle are well established in the literature but there has been little research on bred heifer price determinants and specifically the impact of feeder cattle prices on the purchase price of bred heifers. We estimated the impact of reproductive characteristics and feeder cattle prices on bred heifer prices for beef production. Data were obtained from a May and November bred heifer sale located in Kentucky and hedonic pricing models were estimated for bred heifers for each sale month. Death loss in feedlot cattle can have significant impacts on feedlot profitability. Not only does death loss result in foregone revenue, but the operation still incurs the costs to date associated with those animals. This study uses pen-level feedlot data from a private feed-lot in the Southern Great Plains. Both company- owned and customer retained ownership cattle are included in the data set. A Tobit model is used to analyze pen characteristics’ influence on death loss in feedlot cattle, including cattle characteristics, source characteristics, management characteristics, and treatment incidence. Cultivating Historic Farms: A Study Of Late-Nineteenth Century Maryland Farms, Sarah N. Janesko

This study examines late-19th century farmsteads in Anne Arundel County, Maryland to measure and explain changes in agriculture and the effect of farming strategies on the local landscape. Agricultural census data from 1850–1880 in the county’s First Election District are used to measure significant changes in crop production after the Civil War. From this local level analysis, one farmstead is analyzed to understand those agricultural changes at the household level. Results from exploratory statistics, two-sided independent t tests, and one-way analysis of variances demonstrate that mean production of tobacco, wheat, and corn decreased significantly in the decades after the Civil …

Purpose: How has Covid-19 impacted meat processors’ stock returns? We evaluate the effects of supply chain disruptions (e.g., lockdowns and Covid-19 incidences among workers) on stock market prices of meat processors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design/methodology/approach This study uses an event study approach to examine the disruptions from COVID-19 through events such as plant shutdowns, the pandemic announcement, lockdown dates, and the first case of Covid-19 outbreaks in meat processing plants. Our dataset includes S&P 500, Google Trends, financial beta, and data collected for 14 U.S. Publicly traded meat processing companies.

The Philippine aquaculture sector is primarily dominated by milkfish, with the province of Iloilo as one of the key producing areas. However, the production in the province has exhibited a decreasing trend since 2011. In this light, this study is undertaken to determine the technical efficiency of milkfish production in the province of Iloilo and identify the factors that significantly affect such efficiency. Utilizing the maximum likelihood estimation method, a Cobb-Douglas production function was specified to estimate farm-level efficiency using the data from 181 milkfish producers interviewed. This study aimed to explore the impact of the farmgate price of hogs, the volume of hog production, the volume of imported pork, the market retail price per kilo of dressed chicken, the quantity of pork consumed by the population, the GDP per capita, and African Swine Fever (ASF) on the pork market retail price in the Philippines. This study examined the antecedents of Filipino engineering students’ intention to work overseas, applying the theory of planned behavior (TPB) (involving attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control) extended with migration push and pull factors (PPF) (involving salary and compensation, career prospects, and quality of life). Structural equation modeling using 1,706 questionnaire responses proved that the PPF dimensions were indistinguishable, while another factor distinct from attitude, evoking the perceived enjoyment of working overseas (PEJ), emerged. The TPB and PPF were identified as important antecedents of intention (R2 = 0.667). PEJ had no direct effect on it but was significant along …
