The Impact Of Climate Change On Environmental Sustainability And Human Mortality, Xingzhi Mara Chen, Andrew Sharma, Hua Liu 2023 Salisbury University

The Impact Of Climate Change On Environmental Sustainability And Human Mortality, Xingzhi Mara Chen, Andrew Sharma, Hua Liu

Political Science & Geography Faculty Publications

Climate dictates the critical aspects of human environmental conditions. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather conditions due to human-induced climate change have alarmingly increased. Consequently, climate change directly affects environmental sustainability and human mortality in the short term and creates prolonged and complicated long-term indirect grave risks. This paper examines three-level environmental impact risks associated with climate change on human mortality. It proposes a conceptual framework for developing an empirical event-based human mortality database related to climate change and communication strategies to enhance global environmental adaptation, resilience, and sustainability.

Acceleration Of U.S. Southeast And Gulf Coast Sea-Level Rise Amplified By Internal Climate Variability, Sönke Dangendorf, Noah Hendricks, Qiang Sun, John Klinck, Tal Ezer, Thomas Frederikse, Francisco M. Calafat, Thomas Wahl, Torbjörn E. Törnqvist

CCPO Publications

While there is evidence for an acceleration in global mean sea level (MSL) since the 1960s, its detection at local levels has been hampered by the considerable influence of natural variability on the rate of MSL change. Here we report a MSL acceleration in tide gauge records along the U.S. Southeast and Gulf coasts that has led to rates (>10 mm yr−1 since 2010) that are unprecedented in at least 120 years. We show that this acceleration is primarily induced by an ocean dynamic signal exceeding the externally forced response from historical climate model simulations. However, when the …

Using Stochastic Physics Perturbations In Ensemble Forecasts To Investigate Predictability Of Mesoscale Winter Precipitation Events, William Massey Bartolini 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Using Stochastic Physics Perturbations In Ensemble Forecasts To Investigate Predictability Of Mesoscale Winter Precipitation Events, William Massey Bartolini

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Accurate winter precipitation forecasts are difficult due to factors influencing precipitation amounts and precipitation types including numerical weather prediction biases. In particular, large forecast errors can arise due to uncertainties in parameterized processes, especially those related to microphysics and turbulence. Many winter weather impacts are due to mesoscale precipitation features that are better represented in convection-permitting model forecasts. One way to account for model physics uncertainty is to design convection-permitting ensembles using stochastic physics methods. For example, stochastic parameter perturbation (SPP) varies parameters within individual schemes. SPP methods can be combined with varied initial and boundary conditions (ICs/BCs) to represent …

Enhancing The Impact Of Infrared Satellite Observations On Data Assimilation Through Aerosol-Aware Framework, Shih-Wei Wei 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Enhancing The Impact Of Infrared Satellite Observations On Data Assimilation Through Aerosol-Aware Framework, Shih-Wei Wei

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Aerosol radiative effects, both direct and indirect, have been extensively studied in climate projection and numerical weather prediction. However, the aerosol impacts on radiance in the context of data assimilation (DA) have received less research attention. In modern DA systems, thermal infrared (IR) radiance observations have been extensively assimilated since the mid-1990s. Prior studies have shown pronounced reduction of brightness temperature (BT) at the IR window region due to the presence of aerosols. Despite its effects on IR radiance, aerosol information is not considered in most DA systems.Without considering the aerosol impacts on radiance, the representation errors arise from the …

The Impacts Of Atlantic And Pacific Sea Surface Temperature Variability On South American And Arctic Climate, Zhaoxiangrui He 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

The Impacts Of Atlantic And Pacific Sea Surface Temperature Variability On South American And Arctic Climate, Zhaoxiangrui He

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Atlantic and Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) variations mainly include El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on interannual timescales and Pacific multidecadal variability (PMV) and Atlantic multidecadal variability (AMV) on decadal-interdecadal timescales. Understanding their impacts on South American and Arctic climate is crucial for studying climate variability and helpful to constrain climate model projections for these regions on multidecadal timescales. Prior studies focused mainly on their impacts on global climate, but multidecadal impacts on South American climate are poorly understood due to the lack of long observational records. Furthermore, earlier research investigated primarily the isolated impacts on global climate from the Atlantic …

Assimilating New York State Mesonet Observations For A Summertime Convective Event, Hsiao-Chun Lin 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Assimilating New York State Mesonet Observations For A Summertime Convective Event, Hsiao-Chun Lin

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In New York State (NYS), the prediction of high-impact severe weather event has presented a challenging forecasting problem. The NYS Mesonet (NYSM) has the potential to improve the severe weather forecasting through its continuous in situ and remote sensing measurements on the lower troposphere. The dense observing network can capture the evolution of mesoscale motions with high temporal and spatial resolution. The objectives of this dissertation are (1) to assess whether the assimilation of NYSM observations into numerical weather prediction models could improve model analysis and short-term weather forecasting, and (2) to figure out the important key factor and physical …

Understanding Precipitation Dynamics Of Southern China Through Isotope Analysis Of Lake Yilong Sediments And Other Regional Records, Angelena N. Campisi 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

Understanding Precipitation Dynamics Of Southern China Through Isotope Analysis Of Lake Yilong Sediments And Other Regional Records, Angelena N. Campisi

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The delivery of monsoonal precipitation in the face of climate change is a growing concern, especially within regions with high population density and a corresponding demand for freshwater resources. Within these regions, the monsoon season can deliver more than half of the annual freshwater for the area. Regional climate dynamics controlling these precipitation patterns within the Holocene (11.7 kyr BP−present) are poorly understood and difficult to differentiate within a single climate proxy from a single site. However, by cross referencing different proxies within a given region we can begin to discern general trends in precipitation dynamics on centennial and multi−centennial …

The Effects Of Ep And Cp Enso Phases During Different Seasons On The First Four Dominant Modes Of The Mjo, Suphanat Maneesai 2023 University at Albany, State University of New York

The Effects Of Ep And Cp Enso Phases During Different Seasons On The First Four Dominant Modes Of The Mjo, Suphanat Maneesai

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an interannual climate mode that is dominant in tropical Pacific and affects regional and global weather and climate. Some may categorize ENSO into two types – eastern Pacific ENSO (EP ENSO) and central Pacific ENSO (CP ENSO). Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the most dominant intraseasonal mode in the tropics that impacts regional and global weather. Previous studies have established relationships between ENSO and MJO. An empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was performed to retrieve the principal components (PCs), instead of filtering atmospheric data, to approximately trace the MJO to analyze its relationship with ENSO. An …

Mosby, Kathy Hixson, Melissa Roach, Barnett A. Rattner, Natalie K. Karouna-Renier, Julia S. Lankton 2023 Southeast Missouri State Univerysit

Effects Of Lead Exposure On Birds Breeding In The Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District, Rebecka Brasso, Danielle Cleveland, Frank R. Thompson Iii, David E. Mosby, Kathy Hixson, Melissa Roach, Barnett A. Rattner, Natalie K. Karouna-Renier, Julia S. Lankton

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Lead mining in the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District began in the 1700s and continued for nearly 300 years; the waste piles associated with smelting, mining, and milling of lead ores have released metal residues that have contaminated soil and water in the region. Previous studies in the district have indicated potential harm to wildlife, including birds, because of elevated lead concentrations associated with mining. Exposure to soil-borne lead was correlated with elevated lead concentrations in tissues, inhibition of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (δALAD), and renal lesions in birds foraging on ground-dwelling invertebrates at contaminated sites (compared to reference sites) in …

Examining The Connectivity Of Antarctic Krill On The West Antarctic Peninsula: Implications For Pygoscelis Penguin Biogeography And Population Dynamics, Katherine L. Gallagher, Michael S. Dinniman, Heather J. Lynch 2023 Old Dominion University

Examining The Connectivity Of Antarctic Krill On The West Antarctic Peninsula: Implications For Pygoscelis Penguin Biogeography And Population Dynamics, Katherine L. Gallagher, Michael S. Dinniman, Heather J. Lynch

CCPO Publications

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) are considered a keystone species for higher trophic level predators along the West Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) during the austral summer. The connectivity of these populations may play a critical role in predator biogeography, especially for central-place foragers such as the Pygoscelis penguins that breed along the WAP during the austral summer. Here, we used a physical ocean model to examine adult krill connectivity in this region using simulated krill with realistic diel vertical migration behaviors across four austral summers. Specifically, we examined krill connectivity around the Adélie gap, a 400 km long region along …

The Response Of Sea Ice And High-Salinity Shelf Water In The Ross Ice Shelf Polynya To Cyclonic Atmosphere Circulations, Xiaoqiao Wang, Zhaoru Zhang, Michael S. Dinniman, Petteri Uotila, Xichen Li, Meng Zhou 2023 Old Dominion University

The Response Of Sea Ice And High-Salinity Shelf Water In The Ross Ice Shelf Polynya To Cyclonic Atmosphere Circulations, Xiaoqiao Wang, Zhaoru Zhang, Michael S. Dinniman, Petteri Uotila, Xichen Li, Meng Zhou

CCPO Publications

Coastal polynyas in the Ross Sea are important source regions of high-salinity shelf water (HSSW) – the precursor of Antarctic Bottom Water that supplies the lower limb of the thermohaline circulation. Here, the response of sea ice production and HSSW formation to synoptic-scale and mesoscale cyclones was investigated for the Ross Ice Shelf Polynya (RISP) using a coupled ocean–sea ice–ice shelf model targeted on the Ross Sea. When synoptic-scale cyclones prevailed over RISP, sea ice production (SIP) increased rapidly by 20 %–30 % over the entire RISP. During the passage of mesoscale cyclones, SIP increased by about 2 times over …

Seasonal Variations In Circumpolar Deep Water Intrusions Into The Ross Sea Continental Shelf, Yufei Wang, Meng Zhou, Zhaoru Zhang, Michael S. Dinniman

CCPO Publications

Intrusions of the warm and nutrient-rich Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) across the Ross Sea shelf break play an important role in providing heat for ice shelf basal melting and setting the physical environment for biochemical processes. Several mechanisms driving CDW intrusions into the Ross Sea were proposed such as mesoscale eddies, tidal rectification, and interactions between Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) and topographic features. The seasonal variations in the poleward transport of CDW are investigated using ERA-Interim wind data and a Ross Sea circulation model based on the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) between September 1999 and September 2014. The analyses …

Increasing Impact Of North Atlantic Ocean Circulation On Sedimentary Processes Along The Passive Galicia Margin (Nw Spain) Over The Past 40 Million Years, Julia Haberkern, Till J.J. Hanebuth, Volkhard Spiess, Tilmann Schwenk

Marine Science

Off the Northwestern Iberian Peninsula, the vigorous bottom-current regime interacts with a complex seafloor topography inside the Galicia Interior Basin (GIB), which was tectonically shaped during the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean basin in Cretaceous times. The evolving North Atlantic Ocean circulation determined the depositional pattern of the basin fill over time, which can, in turn, be utilized as palaeoceanographic archive. This study reconstructs the evolution of the GIB sedimentary system since the mid-Eocene, namely, resulting from interplay between down- and along-slope sediment-transport processes, using high-resolution multichannel seismic data. Six major depositional stages are identified and connected to the …
