Using Phenology To Unravel Differential Soil Water Use And Productivity In A Semiarid Savanna, Blake Steiner, Russell L. Scott, Jia Hu, Natasha Mcbean, Andrew Richardson, David J. P. Moore

Savannas are water-limited ecosystems characterized by two dominant plant types: trees and an understory primarily made up grass. Different phenology and root structures of these plant types complicate how savanna primary productivity responds to changes in water availability. We tested the hypothesis that productivity in savannas is controlled by the temporal and vertical distribution of soil water content (SWC) and differences in growing season length of understory and tree plant functional types. To quantify the relationship between tree, understory, and savanna-wide phenology and productivity, we used PhenoCam and satellite observations surrounding an eddy covariance tower at a semiarid savanna site …

The National Airspace System (NAS) is a sophisticated network of air traffic control, navigation, and communication systems that play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient flow of air traffic across the United States. However, the occurrence of severe weather conditions, particularly hailstorms, poses a significant threat to flight safety within the NAS. To mitigate the risks associated with hail, aviation organizations have implemented a range of safety measures. This study utilized Esri’s ArcGIS as a mapping software to conduct a geospatial analysis of the impact of severe weather, particularly hail, on the NAS. The Hail Awareness Spatial …

Medium Range Prediction Of U.S. Severe Convective Storms, Robert Fritzen
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Severe convective storms (SCSs) are responsible for billions of dollars of losses in the United States each year through hazards such as large hail, damaging convective wind gusts, and tornadoes. While techniques for forecasting these SCSs have improved over the years, a majority of these improvements focus on short term forecasting and nowcasting techniques. Little work has been done to analyze the recent advances in numerical weather prediction techniques, and to leverage these advances to the prediction of SCSs at the medium range (defined herein as lead-day 4--8). The primary objectives of this dissertation research are to: 1) explore the …

A Comparison Of Arctic And Atlantic Basin Cyclone Predictability From A Climatology And Case Study Perspective, Peyton Capute
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
Arctic cyclones (ACs) can transport warm, moist air into the Arctic region, which combined with strong winds may lead to rapid declines in sea ice during the summer. As a consequence, accurate sea ice predictions during the summer may rely on being able to predict cyclone-related wind speed and direction, which critically depends on the cyclone track and intensity. Despite this, there are relatively few studies that have documented the predictability of ACs during the summer, beyond a few case studies. In addition, there has been no extensive comparison of whether these cyclones are more or less predictable relative to …

Sources And Significance Of Symmetric Instability In The Outflow Layer Of Tropical Cyclones, Minghao Zhou
Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)
The tropical cyclone (TC) outflow layer is an integral part of the TC transverse circulation: warm and moist air converges in the boundary layer of the TC; rising motion and condensational heating occur in the TC eyewall and rainbands; the TC warm core and divergent anticyclone establish in the mid-upper troposphere, with the mass imported into the TC center exported away through outflow near the tropopause.
A series of state-of-the-art numerical simulations were utilized to investigate different scenarios of TC outflow evolution, from an idealized axisymmetric setup to a semi-idealized asymmetric setup, to a real-case setup of TC–trough interaction. Large …

The Impact Of Thunderstorms On Take-Off Data In South Africa, Quinton Jacobs Mr.
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Aviation and meteorology are entwined disciplines, as aviation occurs in the atmosphere. Prevailing weather conditions at take-off are of utmost importance to aviation. This determines the payload of the aircraft and runway in use. Forecast verification is essential to aviation as it determines the quality of the forecasting products. The tolerances for take-off data are stringent and slightly relaxed tolerances are used in South Africa by mutual agreement.
There are six aerodromes in South Africa where Take-off Data are produced, in varying climatic conditions as South Africa is in both the tropics and midlatitudes. Thunderstorms are a common occurrence over …

Exploring The Atmospheric And Weather Conditions For Hoar Frost Formation At Or Tambo International Airport: A Case Study Of Ground Aircraft Icing Events For The Period 2017-2023., Thabisile P Z Ntleko Ms, Xolani Matlou Mr
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
Ground aircraft icing has an adverse effect on the aerodynamic performance of aircrafts as well as the efficient operations of airlines and airports. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) Aviation Weather Centre (AWC) issues forecasts and warnings for the aviation community, which include aerodrome warnings for hoar frost accumulation. The infrequent and notable temporal occurrence of this weather phenomena renders it a rare aviation hazard to warn for, therefore understanding the weather and atmospheric conditions conducive for its formation is important for accurate forecasting. This study analyses 28 incidents of ground aircraft icing events at OR Tambo International Airport, South …

Impact Of Weather Factors On Airport Arrival Rates: Application Of Machine Learning In Air Transportation, Robert W. Maxson, Dothang Truong, Woojin Choi

Weather is responsible for approximately 70% of air transportation delays in the National Airspace System, and delays resulting from convective weather alone cost airlines and passengers millions of dollars each year due to delays that could be avoided. This research sought to establish relationships between environmental variables and airport efficiency estimates by data mining archived weather and airport performance data at ten geographically and climatologically different airports. Several meaningful relationships were discovered from six out of ten airports using various machine learning methods within an overarching data mining protocol, and the developed models were tested using historical data.

This research study examines the perception of seafarers regarding climate change, a significant global issue. The present study aims to investigate the degree of awareness and comprehension of climate change impacts among marine officers. Specifically, the research focuses on exploring the potential association between the marine officers' ranks and their knowledge of climate change issues. The study utilises a quantitative analytical approach, employing questionnaires as the primary means of data collection and the Chi-Square test for statistical analysis. The findings of the research indicate a noteworthy correlation between the hierarchical positions of the marine respondents and their perspectives on the …
