European Wasp: Declared Pest, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Biosecurity factsheets
The European wasp is one of the worst wasps in the world — harmful to people, outdoor lifestyles, and horticultural and agricultural industries. Early detection of wasp activity is critical to prevent the wasp establishing in Western Australia (WA). This is achieved via collaboration between residents, businesses, industry, and government.

Biosecurity factsheets
The department’s European wasp surveillance and eradication program is a yearly campaign, aimed at detecting the presence of this destructive pest as early as possible so that nests can be found and eradicated.
The continued success of European wasp surveillance and eradication program relies on surveillance in metropolitan Perth and regional areas, strong community awareness, and participation between residents, business owners, community groups, industry, and government.

Evaluation Of Dual Purpose Canola And Cereals Grazed With Cattle, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock factsheets
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development conducted research to investigate and demonstrate the importance of dual-purpose crops (canola, wheat and barley) to improve the feed availability for cattle (in late autumn to early winter) in mixed farming systems of the high rainfall environment of Western Australia (WA).
The grain yield of a wide range of canola and cereal varieties sown in mid-April were unaffected by the grazing of cattle at a stocking rate of 20 to 22 dry sheep equivalent (DSE) per hectare (ha) for up to 4 weeks at Esperance in 2011.
The grazed crops yielded the …

Altitude-Driven Variations In Chrysophycean Stomatocyst Assemblages: Implications For Climate Reconstructions In The Three Parallel Rivers Of Yunnan Protected Area, China, Yanling Li, Qi Liu, Yangdong Pan, Wanting Pang
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Area (TPRYPA) is in the core area of the Hengduan Mountains, characterized by paralleling alternately high mountains and canyons that led to significant vertical temperature variation. Developing a climate transfer function for this region is crucial for both biodiversity protection and enhancing our understanding of feedback mechanisms between low-latitude and high-altitude areas in the context of global climate change. We investigated the chrysophycean stomatocyst assemblages from surface sediments of 46 high mountain lakes (altitude: 3244 to 5043 m) in the TPRYPA to assess the suitability of cysts in prediction of climate variability in …

Ecosystem restoration is a critical nature-based solution to mitigate climate change. However, the carbon sequestration potential of restoration, defined as the maximum achievable carbon storage, has likely been overestimated because previous studies have not adequately accounted for the competition between ecosystem water demands for maximizing carbon sequestration and human water needs. Here we used a comprehensive process-based model combined with extensive land-use data and evaporation recycling accounting for land–atmosphere feedback to estimate the water requirements associated with ecosystem restoration. We found that achieving the carbon sequestration potential of restoration would significantly reduce global water availability per capita by 26%, posing …
