Library Presentations

Available literature on teaching evidence-based medicine (EBM) to medical students focuses on teaching critical appraisal skills, often in the context of a journal club, workshops or lectures. Being able to utilize EBM effectively means that a learner is able to take a clinical scenario, develop a clinically relevant question, search for the evidence, appraise that evidence, and apply the results of this appraisal back to the individual patient. Hence EBM activity is more likely to become a part of clinical decision-making if medical students practice the skills in the context of direct patient care.

Increasing demand for nurses with bachelor degrees, the growing culture of accountability in higher education, and the community college baccalaureate phenomena provided the impetus for this study. This ex-post facto quantitative study examined the graduation rates and time to degree of 240 students who were enrolled in a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program at a community college in Florida between Fall of 2002 and Spring of 2004. The general education course enrollment patterns of the students were analyzed to determine if they impacted student graduation rates and time to degree. Antioxidant, Antimicrobial Properties And Phenolics Of Different Solvent Extracts From Bark, Leaves And Seeds Of Pongamia Pinnata (L.) Pierre, Zahid Iqbal Sajid, Farooq Anwar, Ghulam Shabir, Ghulam Rasul, Khalid M. Alkharfy, Anwarul Hassan Gilani

This study appraises the antioxidant and antimicrobial attributes of various solvent extracts (absolute methanol, aqueous methanol, absolute ethanol, aqueous ethanol, absolute acetone, aqueous acetone, and deionized water) from bark, leaves and seeds of Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre. Maximum extraction yield of antioxidant components from bark (16.31%), leaves (11.42%) and seeds (21.51%) of P. pinnata was obtained using aqueous methanol (20:80). Of the extracts tested, the bark extract, obtained with aqueous methanol, exhibited greater levels of total phenolics [6.94 g GAE/100 g dry weight (DW)], total flavonoids (3.44 g CE/100 g DW), inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation (69.23%) and DPPH radical …

Qualitative research is becoming more prominent in academic medicine and health care fields, and an increasing number of publications using qualitative methods are featured in prominent journals; thus, recognizing the different available approaches can benefit researchers of all types. While a debate may wage between proponents of qualitative versus quantitative research, both sets of methods—and often a blend of the two—offer important insights into the problems the academic medicine community faces.

An In Vivo Study On The Diuretic Activity Of Holarrhena Antidysenterica, Aslam Khan, Samra Bashir, Anwar Hassan Gilani

Holarrhena antidysenterica is used as diuretic in traditional medicine. The aim of this study was to evaluate the crude extract of H. antidysentrica seeds (Ha.Cr) and its fractions, n-hexane (Ha.Hx), n-butanol (Ha.Bu) and aqueous (Ha.Aq), for their diuretic effect in Wistar rats and to investigate whether the activity is concentrated in any of the fractions. Wistar rats kept on fasting for 24 h with water ad labium, divided into normal, positive control and treated groups were orally given normal saline (20 ml/kg), hydrochlorothiazide (HCT; 10 mg/kg) and different doses of the plant material, respectively. Justin's Story is part of Pediatric End-of-Life Case Studies, one of seven teaching modules drawn from the Emmy Award-winning documentary, A Lion in the House. A Lion in the House portrays an unprecedented, intimate look at the realities of childhood cancer through the journeys of five families and their professional caregivers over the course of 6 years. Justin's Story provides a forum for open-ended discussion and consideration of compassionate approaches for navigating pediatric end-of-life. This project takes a look at the cultural, religious, and socio-economic roles that affect the spread of education regarding HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. A personal experience in Zanzibar, Tanzania was the incentive to spark interest in teaching. HIV/AIDS is a powerful epidemic that has taken the lives away from millions. This article takes a deeper look at the transmission, stigmas, and pathways for change.
