Background: The Library serves students, staff and faculty of the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and related Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Students face the daunting yet crucial tasks of preparing Personal Statements for residency, scholarship and other applications. Students and residents are also encouraged to seek publication opportunities. We recognized a need for proofreading and editing assistance, and one of our librarians had the background and experience to provide such a service.

Objectives: This study investigates whether there is a relationship between Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine's fourth-year medical students' acceptance into their preferred specialty for residency and their submission of the Personal Statement portion of their residency application for review/edit by the Library's editing service. We hope that our results will aid other institutions which may be considering whether to provide a similar service.

E-cigarette usage has grown significantly in recent years, with over 5 million US middle and high school students reporting recent usage. The long-term health consequences of these devices are still being investigated, but it is known that e-cigarette aerosol could contain harmful substances including nicotine, heavy metals, and carcinogens. Therefore, it is important for physicians to ask patients about e-cigarette usage specifically, as this may contribute to future health problems. This dissertation is a collection of four studies which collectively explore a hypothesized construct of ‘moral evaluation of patient behaviors’ (MEPB) as a driver of health professionals’ readiness to interact humanistically with their patients. In these studies, ‘humanistic interactions’ refer to the non-technical, intangible skills and factors of clinical competence; the factors specifically explored in these studies were compassion toward patients, self-efficacy for treating patients, and optimism toward patient treatment. For the purpose of specificity, all factors were examined as they pertained to patients with substance use disorders. Purpose: To describe obstetric training in Southeast family medicine residencies in 2019. To determine factors that contribute to continuity deliveries, vaginal deliveries and residents who continue OB after graduation.

Methods: A survey of family medicine program directors was conducted in 2019. We took the answers from the 32 South Atlantic program directors that completed the survey questions of interest. We used chi-square tests and Kruskal-Wallis rank test to compare variables. STATA 14 was used for analysis.

Results: Half of the programs had graduates with10% of graduates continue OB after graduation. The following factors were significant for graduates who continue OB: …

Caroli disease and Caroli syndrome are two rare congenital diseases of the intrahepatic bileducts. Caroli syndrome is characterized by the saccular dilatation of intrahepatic bile ductsassociated with congenital hepatic fibrosis. It is rarely diagnosed in childhood. We herebydescribe a case of Caroli syndrome in a young Tanzanian female who had abdominal pain anddistension since childhood. Her history suggested the presence of portal hypertension possiblyfrom congenital hepatic fibrosis. Purpose: Race is related to health disparities, not to genetic predispositions, but race is often presented to medical students as a biological variable. At Sidney Kimmel Medical College, the curriculum has never been reviewed to analyze how race is presented to students. This Scholarly Inquiry project aims to analyze how the case-based learning (CBL) narratives presented to medical students perpetuate or challenge implicit biases in medicine, especially in regard to race. This paper will describe the methods of the project, which can serve as a model for other institutions to review their own curricula.

Purpose: While Basic Life Support (BLS) skills are typically included in undergraduate medical education (UME) curricula, graduating students continue to demonstrate substandard skills retention. In the setting of the opioid epidemic, effective opioid overdose management (OOM) training should likewise take place during UME. To date, there is a paucity of literature that describes incoming medical students’ knowledge and attitudes on these topics prior to beginning their studies. The purpose of this study is to describe medical students’ knowledge and attitudes towards BLS and OOM prior to their medical training to inform curricular change in UME.

Phase 1

Purpose/Methods: Status Epilepticus (SE) represents a potentially fatal neurologic emergency. We aimed to create an educational simulation of SE for 9 PGY2 neurology residents. Scenarios included a patient with SE requiring adequate benzodiazepine dosing and another with seizures requiring IV anticonvulsant therapy. Subjects were dichotomized to groups who did and did not feel confident in clinical skills around SE. Knowledge was assessed with a multiple choice quiz. Confidence groups were analyzed with Fisher’s exact test. Quiz scores means were assessed with paired t-test.
