Ectopic pregnancy in a woman with T9 AIS A (motor complete, sensory complete) paraplegia secondary to a high-grade spinal cord pilocytic astrocytoma

Background

In the United States, 20,000 women of childbearing age have a spinal cord injury (SCI). While SCI induces transient amenorrhea immediately after injury, women generally have normal reproductive function after SCI, and their fertility is unimpaired. Medications that commonly manage complications of SCI should be avoided or discontinued during pregnancy. Complications inherent to SCI, including urologic issues, are often exacerbated during pregnancy.

Introduction
Many Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) residency programs utilize “home call” systems for nighttime coverage of inpatient services. In this system, trainees are expected to work at full capacity the following day after taking nocturnal call. While “on call,” trainees receive both urgent and non-urgent pages throughout the night, which disrupt sleep. To mitigate fatigue, improve hand-offs and improve timing of patient care, this study targeted reducing non-urgent overnight pages from nurses to home call PM&R residents between 11pm to 6am.

Cultural diversity training in pharmacy education has evolved from standalone lectures to longitudinal courses, service-learning initiatives, rotation experiences, and global health opportunities. This mixed methods study explored the perceptions, attitudes, and pedagogies of pharmacy educators who have incorporated culture diversity into their classrooms and clinic sites. First, 91 online surveys incorporating items from the Teaching Multicultural Attitudes Survey and the Multicultural Competency Teaching Scale were distributed to a random sample of pharmacy faculty who interface with cultural diversity. In total, 36 completed surveys were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, and stepwise linear regressions. Following the survey, seven pharmacy faculty …

Background:Social determinants of health (SDH) account for a large percentage of health outcomes. Therefore, ensuring providers can address SDH is paramount yet curricula in this area is limited. Aim:The authors aimed to raise awareness, identify learning opportunities, foster positive attitudes, and equip educators to implement SDH curriculum. Setting and participants:This retreat occurred at a large academic institution and had over 130 participants who represented 56 distinct training programs and over 20 disciplines. Background: Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) have contributed to U.S. healthcare workforce training since 1971. National funders recently refocused efforts from K-12 students to matriculated health profession students, which reduced annual funding by $75,000 (25%) per year per Center.

Objectives: To describe how community partnership changed due to funding reductions.

Methods: Key informant interviews were conducted with all four regional center directors with community partnerships.

Lessons learned: Hosted regional centers navigated partnerships in ways that did not significantly change programs because the host institutions supported continuing the partnerships. Independent centers experienced significant changes in partnerships by ending well-established programs and …

Advance Care Planning (ACP) is a process that captures a patient’s wishes in the case of future circumstances in which they are unable to express them. Studies show that less than one third of the general population has completed some type of formal Advance Directive (AD). There are barriers to completing ADs, and these barriers operate on multiple levels, including, patient, provider and institutional. Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate whether formative testing from iRAT and MCQ data was predictive of final exam scores for the Staying Alive course at WSU BSOM. Methods: Data was collected from two consecutive classes of first-year medical students (n=234). Data included students’ formative quiz scores (iRAT), formative exam scores (MCQ), final exam scores (NBME), race, and gender. Three regression models were created to analyze the relationship between formative and final scores. Results: The average iRAT score was not a significant predictor of NBME score. 53-56% of the variability in NBME score was attributed to iRAT, …

Alzheimer disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes cognition impairment and memory loss, affecting activities in daily living. In the United States, an estimated 4.5 million people have AD and this figure is expected to reach 14 million by 2050. Because patients with AD experience a deterioration of their mental functions, patients need more help with their activities of daily living, including oral hygiene, as their AD progresses. Phase 1

Purpose: Status Epilepticus (SE) represents a potentially fatal neurologic emergency. At Jefferson, acute management of SE falls to the inpatient neurologist, requiring early competency.

Methods: During a 2 week educational “bootcamp”, 9 PGY2 residents participated in a 2 hour simulation of acute SE with two clinical scenarios. Scenarios included a patient with SE requiring adequate benzodiazepine dosing and another with seizures requiring IV anticonvulsant therapy. Prior to and following the simulation, residents took a survey to gauge their knowledge and confidence in managing SE.

Purpose: The traditional approach to 12-lead electrocardiogram interpretation has limitations in the ED setting because it is tedious and does not emphasize pattern recognition for potentially fatal conditions that ED physicians must recognize. Background: Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder, whose main symptoms include daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, sleep paralysis, disturbed sleep, and hypnagogic hallucinations. Objective: To assess if medical students interested in pursuing a primary care specialty are more receptive and have a more positive attitude towards formulating differential diagnoses (DDx) using metamemory techniques (MMTs). Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of data obtained from 113 MS3 students from the Boonshoft School of Medicine.
