Abstract

Objective: Nursing education is called for reform in the nursing curriculum to meet the complex health care system of the 21st century. The traditional teaching model is inadequate to meet the current nursing practice and requires innovation in education using technology. Lack of faculty and clinical sites has called for alternative teaching methods such as clinical simulation. Currently, up to 50% of clinicals hours can be replaced by simulation in the prelicensure core nursing courses. Low-level foam specialty support surfaces are negatively affecting the number of hospital-acquired pressure injuries that occur each year and overall skin health of acute care patients. Lack of knowledge by wound care specialists on different types of therapy could lead to patients not receiving the best possible specialty surfaces available. An online anonymous survey of 19 certified wound care nurses was conducted. The survey examined the nurses’ knowledge of pressure injuries using the Pieper Zulkowski Pressure Ulcer Knowledge test (PZPUKT) and choice of specialty support surface for prevention of pressure injuries. No other relevant history was present, no similar complaints were present in the past and no comorbidities. On examination, neurological examination was within normal limits. Objectives: To describe the development and evaluation of a university-wide competency and evaluation framework for intra- and interprofessional education (IPE) teamwork.

Methods: Development of the framework was based on existing literature and specific contexts of the schools within our university. Evaluation and program alignment regarding use of the framework were achieved through qualitative interviews with deans of the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy, and focused on how they evaluated student progression towards the university-wide teamwork competency. Interview data were analyzed using classical content analysis.

When we arrived in Huntington, the physician shortage was so extreme that we, who had great medical connections, found it difficult to locate physicians who accepted new patients. We invited the first class of medical students, the Class of 1981, who began medical school in January 1978, their spouses, and all faculty and spouses to our home for an evening of fellowship and food (Appendix 1: The First Graduating Class, the Class of 1981). Objective: This study is aimed at finding out which level and type of preparation is most effective in helping students to achieve success in a flipped classroom curriculum.

Methods: Surveys were conducted regarding the percentage of required preparation students completed for each type of learning session (peer instruction, team-based learning), whether or not they used supplemental resources, and whether or not they completed >50% or < 50% of the required preparation. These were then compared to student scores on the type of learning activity through Spearman correlations and unpaired t-tests.

Results: The greater the percentage of required preparation completed typically resulted in higher test scores. Supplemental preparation did not directly correlate with higher test scores, with some cases showing a decrease in score with the …

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate academic performance throughout the first two years of medical education of students who classify themselves as underrepresented in medicine (URM) as compared to non-URM students. Methods: Final exam scores from each course throughout the Foundation phase, Clinical Medicine evaluation scores, CBSE scores, and Step 1 scores from three classes of medical students at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine were analyzed using multiple linear regression models, while controlling for MCAT percentile, undergraduate science GPA, and gender. The role transition from a registered nurse (RN) to a nurse practitioner (NP) can be challenging and stressful as the RN moves from often expert status back to novice status as an NP. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to explore if role transition was easier for novice NPs that participated in a post-graduate training program, then for those that did not.
