Background: Simulation provides the opportunity for learners to bridge the gap between evidence-based theoretical knowledge and clinical practice experience. Residency programs often utilize simulation to expose the learners to various patients who are presenting in extremis in a safe environment. This empowers the trainee by providing them with tools and experiences to enhance their pediatric education. Simulation is also utilized to practice non-technical skills like team dynamics and communication in a psychologically safe setting. Objectives: Proper emergency department (ED) utilization is a hallmark of population health. Emergency department overcrowding due to nonurgent visits causes increased stress to healthcare staff, higher costs, and longer wait times for more urgent cases. This study sought to better understand post pandemic reasons caregivers have when bringing in their children for nonurgent visits and devise effective interventions to improve caregiver choice for non-ED care for nonurgent conditions.

Methods: Surveys were conducted at an urban pediatric hospital for Emergency Severity Index (ESI) level 3 to 5 visits. A total of 602 surveys were completed with 8 being excluded from analysis. …

Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) is built on the concept that the competencies of learners, both graduates and practicing physicians, should ensure they are ready to meet the ever-changing healthcare needs of patients.1, 2, 3 Education outcomes in a CBME system are defined based on the needs of patients, and in healthy CBME systems, there is a paradigm shift from a focus on process and teachers to outcomes and learners.2,4 CBME should occur across the continuum of one's career, from undergraduate medical education through retirement. Background: This study evaluated the performance of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models on the Orthopaedic In-Training Examination (OITE), an annual exam administered to U.S. orthopaedic residency programs. Methods: ChatGPT 3.5 and Bing AI GPT 4.0 were evaluated on standardised sets of multiple-choice questions drawn from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons OITE online question bank spanning 5 years (2018–2022). A total of 1165 questions were posed to each AI system. The performance of both systems was standardised using the latest versions of ChatGPT 3.5 and Bing AI GPT 4.0. INTRODUCTION: Eye emergencies make up nearly 3% of US emergency department (ED) visits. While emergency physicians (EP) should diagnose and treat these ophthalmologic emergencies, many trainees report limited ocular exposure and insufficient training throughout their residency to confidently conduct a thorough slit-lamp exam.

METHODS: We created an interdisciplinary, simulation-based mastery learning (SBML) curriculum to teach emergency attending physicians how to operate the slit lamp with multimodal learning methodology at a tertiary academic center. PURPOSE: During the third-year emergency medicine (EM) clerkship, medical students are immersed in traumatic incidents with their patients and clinical teams. Trauma-informed medical education (TIME) applies trauma-informed care (TIC) principles to help students manage trauma. We aimed to qualitatively describe the extent to which students perceived the six TIME domains as they navigated critical incidents during their EM clerkship.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: As application to residency programs becomes increasingly competitive, educational leaders face growing student concern about imprecise clinical assessments and clerkship grades.

METHODS: As part of a large annual survey of family medicine clerkship directors (FMCDs), 10 questions were disseminated in May 2023 about perceived levels of imprecise assessments by faculty. We aimed to determine to what extent respondents felt their institution's evaluation system propagated inaccurate grading.

Introduction

Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is an autoinflammatory disease whose acronymic name stands for the symptoms commonly seen in the disease. These symptoms typically occur simultaneously, in different combinations, in patients during exacerbations of the disease. SAPHO syndrome is a rare disease, most frequently seen in patients aged 30 to 50. It is estimated to be found in 1 in 10 000 persons in White populations, with an even lower incidence seen in non-White populations.

Background

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has called for self-study within residency programs. Post-graduate surveys allow the graduate to reflect upon their residency experience after years of autonomous practice. Despite their potential utility, a standardized assessment of residency training from the perspective of orthopaedic alumni does not exist. In this study, we aimed to create, analyze, and share with our alumni a post-graduate survey based on ACGME core competencies.
