Interprofessional Education (IPE) and One Health are two common and overlapping frameworks for teaching collaborative practice. IPE is common at human medical institutions, while One Health is more common in graduate and veterinary programs. The connection between IPE and One Health is still being explored both in scholarship and in real-world professional settings. This prospective, qualitative research study examines the intersection of IPE and One Health at institutions that are members of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) One Health Alliance (COHA). This past academic year I had the opportunity to participate in the Jefferson Student Interprofessional Complex Care Collaborative (J-SICCC). I worked with a team of four other Jefferson students from different academic programs to be a student advocate for a patient. Our team worked with her on managing some of her health concerns and goals such as a regimen for her diabetic medication and resources regarding medication disposal, social support, and mental health services. I was introduced to JCIPE in 2013 and began facilitating Health Mentors Program small group sessions in the spring semester of 2014. I continued facilitating Health Mentors orientation and small group sessions, then also became a faculty facilitator for TeamSAFE simulations in 2017. In 2021, I learned about the Hotspotting Program (now the Jefferson Student Interprofessional Complex Care Collaborative, or J-SICCC). These platforms provide virtual synchronous and asynchronous opportunities for professionals from diverse backgrounds to share insights, discuss best practices, and collaborate. Interprofessional work involves collaboration of health and social care professionals both across the healthcare system and with individuals in related fields, such as law or environmental services. As a professional networking platform, LinkedIn® provides an opportunity to connect with professionals in other fields outside of traditional conferences and institutional settings.

Over the past year, we – a group of pre/ health professional students – had the immense privilege to participate in the Jefferson Student Interprofessional Complex Care Collaborative (J-SICCC). Our team, composed of five students from diverse backgrounds and areas of study in prehealth and health professions programs, met and began working together in July 2023. With the help of advisors from similarly heterogenous fields, we embarked on a year-long journey with a simple, but not easy, goal: work alongside a single patient with complex care needs to navigate the tumultuous world of health and healthcare.

Journal of Dietetic Education

This observational research presents multi-year findings of a project using an online case study implemented in an undergraduate Medical Nutrition Therapy class that fostered interprofessional collaboration among students from various healthcare disciplines. The case study focused on a fictional patient with an ischemic stroke and all work was virtual. Students from various allied healthcare fields were represented: dietetics and nutrition, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and social work. Both undergraduate and graduate students participated in developing a virtual care plan for the patient, with an emphasis on helping students explain their role to the team, while simultaneously learning how to collaborate …

Stress, Resilience, And Coping: A Cross-Sectional Study Of Black Male Osteopathic Medical Students’ Experiences In Medical School, Eboni Anderson

This quantitative study investigated stress, coping, and resilience among Black male osteopathic medical students (BMOMS), focusing on the unique challenges that affect their academic success, mental and physical health, and professional development. This study was contextualized within the shifting demographics of U.S. osteopathic medical schools and the underrepresentation of Black males. Utilizing Moos’ Integrative Model of Stress and Coping, survey data from BMOMS (n = 85) were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlations, and multiple linear regressions. Research questions addressed BMOMS’ specific stressors, the relationship between resilience and coping, and the influence of demographic variables. Out of 101 initial survey …

Purpose: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a method for a patient and physician to cooperatively consider a diagnostic or therapeutic option, ultimately empowering the patient to make an informed decision. Atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation is a procedure that would benefit from SDM given the risk of serious adverse events, the high rate of arrhythmia recurrence, and alternative treatment options. Implementing a patient decision aid (PDA) may help facilitate AF ablation SDM by succinctly conveying important information to patients.

Bridging The Gap: Psychopharmacologic Education And Side Effect Screening For Non-Prescribing Mental Health Professionals, Elaine Fitzgerald

Abstract

Problem: The United States is experiencing a growing demand for pediatric mental health support. Surges in mental health diagnoses and psychotropic medication prescriptions have occurred, compounded by a shortage of psychiatric providers. Non-prescribing mental health professionals are well-positioned to recognize psychotropic medication side effects. However, psychologists and counselors lack formal pharmacology education.

Methods: The quality improvement (QI) initiative was guided by the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model. The evidence-based psychopharmacologic education for non-prescribers utilized a quasi-experimental pre- and post- test design. Data collected from clinicians included knowledge, confidence, and skill concerning psychotropic medications. The Psychotropic Medication Monitoring Checklist (PMMC) screen clients …
