Targeting The Transferrin Receptor To Develop Erythropoietin For Alzheimer’S Disease, Rachita K. Sumbria
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
"Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States with approximately 5.8 million Americans currently living with AD. Due to the lack of a disease modifying treatment for AD and the aging baby boomer generation, this number is projected to grow to 13.8 million by 2050 (Gaugler et al., 2019). Amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaque accumulation, one of the major pathological hallmarks of AD, can begin > 20 years before clinical symptoms of AD. By the time AD is clinically diagnosed, neuronal loss and neuropathological lesions (Aβ plaques and tau tangles) have already occurred in many brain regions …

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
In this study, a new tyramine derived Schiff base ligand (L) (L=1,3-phenylene-bis-4-aminoantipyrinyl-4-aminoethylphenol) and its derived transition metal(II) complexes [Cu(L)Cl2](1), [Ni(L)Cl2](2), [Co(L)Cl2] (3) and [Zn(L)Cl2] (4) have been synthesized and well characterized by the way of different spectroscopic and analytical techniques. Analytical and spectroscopic studies result suggests that metal(II) complexes more probably have octahedral geometry. DNA binding tendency of L and metal(II) complexes 1-4 have been assessed by probing their ability to bind with Calf Thymus DNA (CT-DNA) via electronic absorption and cyclic voltammetry titration methods. The results clearly reveal that the metal(II) …

Data analysis workflows in many scientific domains have become increasingly complex and flexible. To assess the impact of this flexibility on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) results, the same dataset was independently analyzed by 70 teams, testing nine ex-ante hypotheses. The flexibility of analytic approaches is exemplified by the fact that no two teams chose identical workflows to analyze the data. This flexibility resulted in sizeable variation in hypothesis test results, even for teams whose statistical maps were highly correlated at intermediate stages of their analysis pipeline. Variation in reported results was related to several aspects of analysis methodology. Importantly, …

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
Endocarditis is a well known complication of intravenous drug abuse which classically affects the tricuspid valve. It is usually diagnosed by formal echocardiogram and positive blood cultures. Vegetations involving both the mitral and tricuspid valves are rare, occurring in less than 5% of all cases of infective endocarditis. 1 Here we report a case of a patient with vegetations on both valves which was discovered by point of care ultrasound.

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Objectives:
Sepsis is a leading cause of death in the United States. Putative targets to prevent systemic inflammatory response syndrome include antagonism of toll-like receptors 2 and 4 and CD44 receptors in vascular endothelial cells. Proteoglycan-4 is a mucinous glycoprotein that interacts with CD44 and toll-like receptor 4 resulting in a blockade of the NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing-3 pathway. We hypothesized that endothelial cells induced into a sepsis phenotype would have less interleukin-6 expression after recombinant human proteoglycan 4 treatment in vitro.
Design:
Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and reverse transcriptase-quantitative polymerase chain reaction to measure interleukin-6 protein and gene expression.
Setting: …

Internal Hernia As A Late Complication Of Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass Procedure, Samantha Purton, Gabriel Meshekow, My Myers, Edgar Mercado, Allan Katz
West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020
As the prevalence of obesity continues to rise, so does the popularity of bariatric surgery. Previously the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass was the most common bariatric procedure, but now falls second to the gastric sleeve. It remains a relevant procedure, however, accounting for 17% of bariatric procedures in 2018. Due to its prevalence, it is important that the radiologist be familiar with the procedure and its complications such as leak, obstruction, stricture, or, as in this case, internal herniation through a mesenteric defect. Internal hernias are more commonly associated with the laparoscopic approach versus open. This is likely due to fewer …

Non-Invasive Peripheral Venous And Arterial Line Air Detector For Embolization Prevention, Alexandria Kwong, Kevin Shu, Dylan Meinster
Biomedical Engineering
The scope of this project includes designing a non-invasive bubble detector for peripheral venous and arterial lines. For minimally invasive cardiac procedures, arterial and venous access is necessary for these procedures as is constant flow through the tubing to prevent clotting and to administer drugs. Air bubbles are common in these lines and can be consequential if enough air is introduced into the human system. Air embolisms are the most common and relevant issues during these procedures. The goal of this device is to create an attachable detector for air bubbles in saline that can also terminate flow and alert …

The Prevalence Of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Found During Screening Of A High-Risk Cardiovascular Population, Sorcha Amond Murray
Masters
Introduction: The effectiveness of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) has been debated for many years. An AAA is defined as a focal dilation of the abdominal aortic artery exceeding 1.5 times its normal size (Kent, 2014). Risk factors associated with AAA are similar to those of peripheral vascular disease, thus the population attending a vascular laboratory are ideal candidates for AAA screening. AAAs are more common in males, in smokers, with increasing age, and more likely with a family history of AAA (Chaikof et al, 2009). Currently the UK National Screening Committee recommend one time AAA screening by ultrasound …

The three studies that form this dissertation build knowledge related to functional pinch. Study 1 provides normative data for the Baseline® 5-Position Hydraulic Pinch Meter, which may be used in clinical practice. The data collected in this study demonstrate the relationship between lateral pinch strength and age and reveal that strength decreases with age in both males and females. Through examination of the lateral pinch force produced at the 5 different pinch spans, it was found that the strongest lateral pinch strength was produced at 4-5 cm of pinch span. This information can be used by clinicians as they modify …

Part I, Autoimmune Disease Management and the Need for Intervention, discusses current and standard Autoimmune Disease- (AI/AID) management and the shortcomings within. Typical AID-management led by healthcare professionals lacks a holistic, symptom-based approach, thus further contributing to the daily chronic pain of the afflicted. This analysis indicates the need to connect those suffering with AID’s to scientific research that has determined strict dieting can significantly reduce symptoms associated with AID’s. Part II, Synthesizing A Model For Online Health Community Engagement, examines the website prototype of Greenebean, which is an online community developed via user-centric design, in a theoretical, physical, and …

Innovation, although a subject of considerable debate (e.g., Baregheh et al., 2009; Christensen, 1997), can be defined as the introduction and dissemination of a new or a different idea into use or practice that drives impact (Solis and Sinfield, 2014). Many studies and editorials have highlighted the complexity of the United States health system and detailed the slow speed by which innovative ideas materialize into impactful innovations (Continuing America’s leadership (2017); England & Stewart (2007); Kannampallil, Schauer, Cohen & Patel (2011)). While there are many advances in sensor and wearable technologies in this instance, the adoption rate by oncologists has …

Assisting Children With Velocardiofacial Syndrome Who Have Developmental Disabilities And Delays Associated With Speech, Communication, And Education, Mckenzie K. Holty
Honors Thesis
Children with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) have a variety of complex needs. Research shows that VCFS is characterized by a combination of medical problems, developmental delays, and learning disabilities, which vary from child to child. This syndrome also puts adolescents at a higher risk for developing psychiatric and psychotic disorders. The complexity of symptoms that can arise from VCFS can influence the ability of these children to communicate, socialize, and learn effectively. This literature review aims to discuss literature for caregivers, educators, and physicians to aid children effectively and understand their challenges relating to speech, communication, and education. This topic is …

The risk of an osteoporotic hip fracture is greater than the combined risks of breast cancer, myocardial infarction, and stroke, yet research shows less than 25% of women are being screened. Post-menopause, either surgical or natural, is a risk factor for osteoporosis. Nurse practitioners are in an excellent position to lead the way in osteoporosis screening. This article presents findings in a recent osteoporosis screening program in a primary care office.
