Methodology For Performing Whole Body Pmhs Underbody Blast Impact Testing, And The Corresponding Response Of The Hybrid Iii Dummy And The Finite Element Dummy Model Under Similar Loading Condition, Karthik Somasundaram

Wayne State University Theses

In recent wars, the use of improvised explosive devices and landmines has dramatically increased as a tactical measure to counter armored vehicles. These weapons not only deform and damage the vehicle structure but also produce serious vertical deceleration injuries to mounted occupants. The reported injury patterns largely differ from those in an automotive crash and are often more severe than those in other vertical loading scenarios such as pilot seat ejection, helicopter crash, parachute landing and fall from height. High kinetic energy predominately along the principal vertical (Z-axis) over a short duration makes the underbody blast (UBB) loading conditions unique …

The Influence Of The Lower Trapezius Muscle On Shoulder Impingement And Scapula Dyskinesis, Christian Louque Coulon 2015 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

The Influence Of The Lower Trapezius Muscle On Shoulder Impingement And Scapula Dyskinesis, Christian Louque Coulon

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation contains three experiments all conducted in an outpatient physical therapy setting. Shoulder impingement is a common problem seen in overhead athletes and other individuals and associated changes in muscle activity, biomechanics, and movement patterns have been observed in this condition. Differentially diagnosing impingement and specifically addressing the underlying causes is a vital component of any rehabilitation program and can facilitate the individuals return to normal function and daily living. Current rehabilitation attempts to facilitate healing while promoting proper movement patterns through therapeutic exercise and understanding each shoulder muscles contribution is vitally important to treatment of individuals with shoulder …

Vigorous Exercise Effect On Cardiovascular Health, Aryeh Mahana 2015 Touro College

Vigorous Exercise Effect On Cardiovascular Health, Aryeh Mahana

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Many studies examine the effects of vigorous cardiovascular exercise on the heart. Intense exercise causes frequent muscle contractions in the heart and specific biomarkers that usually signify a myocardial infarction are released into the bloodstream. However, studies indicate that there might not be a correlation between the release of biomarkers and cardiac function. Another study shows that long term vigorous exercise negatively affects the heart by dramatically increasing the mass and volume of the right and left ventricles, thereby resulting in hypertrophy. The cardiac hypertrophy is still evident even after the subjects have stopped exercising. Cardiac hypertrophy results in myocardial …

The Prevalence Of Adverse Cardiometabolic Responses To Exercise Training With Evidence-Based Practice Is Low, Lance C. Dalleck, Gary Van Guilder, Tara B. Richardson, Chantel A. Vella 2015 South Dakota State University

The Prevalence Of Adverse Cardiometabolic Responses To Exercise Training With Evidence-Based Practice Is Low, Lance C. Dalleck, Gary Van Guilder, Tara B. Richardson, Chantel A. Vella

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of individuals who experienced exercise-induced adverse cardiometabolic response (ACR), following an evidence-based, individualized, community exercise program.
Methods: Prevalence of ACR was retrospectively analyzed in 332 adults (190 women, 142 men) before and after a 14-week supervised community exercise program. ACR included an exercise training-induced increase in systolic blood pressure of $10 mmHg, increase in plasma triglycerides (TG) of .37.0 mg/dL ($0.42 mmol/L), or decrease in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) of .4.0 mg/dL (0.12 mmol/L). A second category of ACR was also defined – this was ACR that resulted …

Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Breast Cancer Outcomes: A Systematic Review Of Outcome Measures For Functional Mobility, Mary Insana Fisher, Jeannette Lee, Claire Davies, Hannah Geyer, Genevieve Colon, Lucinda Pfalzer 2015 University of Dayton

Oncology Section Edge Task Force On Breast Cancer Outcomes: A Systematic Review Of Outcome Measures For Functional Mobility, Mary Insana Fisher, Jeannette Lee, Claire Davies, Hannah Geyer, Genevieve Colon, Lucinda Pfalzer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Background: Breast cancer treatments in women with breast cancer often result in physical impairments that lead to activity limitations and participation restrictions. These limitations and restrictions manifest in impaired functional mobility skills that may impact survivorship. Thus, evaluation of functional mobility is an important part of survivorship care.

Purpose: To identify functional mobility outcome measures that possess strong psychometric properties and are clinically useful for examination of women treated for breast cancer.

Methods: Multiple electronic databases were searched for articles published after 1995. Studies were included if they reported psychometric properties, used clinically feasible methods, were performed on adults, and …

The Effects Of Home-Based Pilates In Healthy College-Age Females, Betsy Donahoe-Fillmore, Mary Insana Fisher, C. Jayne Brahler 2015 University of Dayton

The Effects Of Home-Based Pilates In Healthy College-Age Females, Betsy Donahoe-Fillmore, Mary Insana Fisher, C. Jayne Brahler

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Objectives: To quantify and determine the effects of Pilates on core endurance, hamstring flexibility, balance, body composition/mass and perceived stress level in healthy college age females.

Study Design: Randomized controlled trial design.

Background: Emerging research on the Pilates technique is inconclusive regarding benefits to core endurance, flexibility, balance, body mass, and perceived stress.

Methods and Measures: Female college students (n=57; 18-35 years old) were randomly assigned to a Pilates group, who exercised at home with a DVD, or a control group who did not engage in Pilates practice. Core endurance, hamstring flexibility, balance, body composition and stress measurements were taken …

Flow Through The Nasal Cavity Of The Spiny Dogfish, Squalus Acanthias, L. L. Timm-Davis, Frank E. Fish 2015 Texas A & M University - Galveston

Flow Through The Nasal Cavity Of The Spiny Dogfish, Squalus Acanthias, L. L. Timm-Davis, Frank E. Fish

Biology Faculty Publications

The nasal cavity of spiny dogfish is a blind capsule with no internal connection to the oral cavity. Water is envisioned to flow through the cavity in a smooth, continuous flow pattern; however, this assumption is based on previous descriptions of the morphology of the olfactory cavity. No experimentation on the flow through the internal nasal cavity has been reported. Morphology of the head of the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) does not suggest a close external connection between the oral and nasal systems. However, dye visualization showed that there was flow through the nasal apparatus and from the excurrent nostril …

Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley 2015 Eastern Washington University

Acute Effects Of Dynamic Stretching On Flexibility And Agonist-Antagonist Muscle Activity, Lance T. Beisley

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

"Flexibility is an important determinant of health and important in sport performance. ADS and SPST are the methods most often used in training flexibility for sport. Although ADS appears to dominate SPST in measures of power and agility, the mechanisms are unclear. The purpose of this study was to delineate the effects of ADS on AROM and agonist-antagonist mean and peak EMG. The ADS protocol involved three sets of ten repetitions of leg kicks while in the supine position with the pelvis and contralateral limb fixed in extension. Participants moved the leg at the hip in a kicking motion to …

Blood Lactate Clearance During Passive Recovery With Kinesiology Tape Following Maximal Exercise, Marissa A. Miller 2015 University of Texas at Arlington

Blood Lactate Clearance During Passive Recovery With Kinesiology Tape Following Maximal Exercise, Marissa A. Miller

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

NTRODUCTION: Kinesiology tape is an elastic cotton blend fabric strip with an adhesive backing. Many different manufacturers claim that their product reduces muscle fatigue and increases blood flow by lifting the skin up off of the underlying fascia and capillaries. This lifting creates a low-pressure are a beneath the skin, referred to as the decompressed skin. Skin that is not decompressed (skin around tape)is said to have a higher pressure, causing the fluids to move from the areas of higher pressure to areas of lower pressure. This fluid dynamic is the basis for the claims that the tape increases blood …
