Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is related to pain that follows an unfamiliar eccentric exercise that causes damage to the skeletal muscle (Hilbert, et al. 2003). The pain typically appears within the first 24 hours and starts to peak between 48-72 hours post exercise. Symptoms include the feeling of stiffness, pain, and inflammation. Some common forms of treatment for DOMS are ice packs, hot packs, and topical analgesics.

Effects Of Caffeine On Anaerobic Performance, Babak Mouri 2015 University of Texas at Arlington

Effects Of Caffeine On Anaerobic Performance, Babak Mouri

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Anaerobic performance refers to high intensity, short duration exercise performance focusing on speed and power. These are short duration exercises with a high intensity, lasting from three seconds to a maximum of two minutes. The predominate systems within the body working during these performances are the adenosine triphosphate and phosphocreatine (ATP-PC) systems which utilizes stores in the muscle and anaerobic glycolysis which generates ATP and leads to the metabolic byproduct, lactic acid. Caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. This drug increases the metabolism of fatty acids, and in turn spares muscle glycogen to enhance performance. Glycogen is …

Physical Activity is any movement of the body that requires the muscle to do work. One possible way to track that activity is through Electronic Fitness Trackers. Fitness Trackers are wearable devices that track steps, calorie intake and expenditure, and workouts. By having a tracker, users are able see their true day-to-day activity level and can then use the tracker set goals to improve. Little prior research has been done on fitness trackers, as they are a relatively new technology, and that which has been done has focused mostly on validity of measurement. Further research is necessary to determine the …

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Zumba® fitness class as a mix of low intensity and high intensity moves is a well-known exercise class. Zumba® combines fitness elements that include cardiorespiratory, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility. Due to this fact measures of aerobic fitness, such as oxygen consumption (VO2max), should improve when participating in a Zumba® fitness class. Yoga on the other hand is seen as a calm form of exercise that is used for relaxation by targeting the mind and soul. Holding positions should increase muscle endurance and, along with the breathing techniques, should also fitness by increasing components like physical endurance, core strength and …

Introduction • Beta-alanine is an increasingly popular dietary supplement that sometimes is promoted as a performance enhancer (7). • Oral supplementation with the amino acid beta-alanine increases muscle content of the dipeptide carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) and has positive effects on some short high-intensity exercise tasks (4). • Consumption of various individual ingredients often included in proprietary pre- workout blends are known to effectively increase time to fatigue, allowing for an increased training volume (12). • Carnosine acts as an intracellular buffer during high-intensity exercise, and elevations in muscle carnosine concentration have been demonstrated to enhance cycling capacity, ventilatory threshold, and delay …

Body Composition In Body Builders, Taylin Watson 2015 University of Texas at Arlington

Body Composition In Body Builders, Taylin Watson

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

Introduction: Body builders strive to achieve shockingly low body fat percentages when training for a competition. Percent body fat by definition is the amount off fat mass in the body divided by the entire mass of the body. It can be found in a variety of ways including skin fold measurements, bioelectrical impedance analysis(BIA), or a BodPod. The week before the show in bodybuilding participants do “contest prep” which is strictly focused on dramatically reducing body fat as quickly as possible to enhance muscular appearance.

Effects Of Verbal Encouragement On Anaerobic Field Tests, Lawrence Adeniseun 2015 University of Texas at Arlington

Effects Of Verbal Encouragement On Anaerobic Field Tests, Lawrence Adeniseun

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

IntroductionAnaerobically our bodies generate energy using two different energy systems. The first energy system uses adenosine triphosphate and creatine phosphate. It supplies energy for no more than 6-8 seconds. Activities like jumping and running for short periods of time utilize this energy system. The short-term anaerobic system also produces high-powered energy. However, it is a little more enduring and can provide energy for up to 90 seconds. Runners in the 400m event use this energy system. Motivation has consistently been used as a variable to study performance. Some studies have shown no effects of external motivation on anaerobic test performance …

Effects Of Temperature Change On Fluid Intake On Performance, Juanjose Tello 2015 University of Texas at Arlington

Effects Of Temperature Change On Fluid Intake On Performance, Juanjose Tello

Kinesiology Student Research - Archive

INTRODUCTION: Fluid intake during exercise is a very important aspect to both health and performance of an athlete. It is known that during exercise, an increase in exercise intensity causes an increase in HR, breathing rate, VO2(L/min), and other physiologic variables. The body must rid itself of heat that builds up due to the breakdown of energy providers such as glycogen, protein, fat, and blood glucose and muscle contraction. Body temperature is another variable that is affected by increase in exercise, but proper hydration helps aid the body in getting rid of excess heat and helps return the body to …

Cordyceps sinesis (Cs) is a Chinese herb extracted from a nontoxic mushroom. Research has shown that this herb increases in ventilation and exercise capacity. Maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) is the maximum capacity of transportation and utilization of oxygen during incremental exercise. VO2max is expressed in both absolute rate in liters of oxygen per minute (L/min) and relative rate in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). Research with Cs has shown to increase vasodilation, which increases the efficiency and rate of delivery of oxygen to the working tissues.

Anaerobic exercise is often defined as any short-duration exercise that is powered primarily by metabolic pathways that do not use oxygen. The Wingate test measures peak power and anaerobic capability. The main energy system powering anaerobic exercise is the ATP-PC system, however, during the Wingate test the glycolytic pathway also provides some of the energy. Pre-workout supplements are used as aids to increase tolerance and muscle contractility and provide a short burst of energy during physical activity.

Athletes have found a new way to train to get an edge over their competitors and that is to train in an environment where oxygen is lacking. With a lower supply of oxygen, the body produces the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates the bone marrow to create more red blood cells to form more hemoglobin. Hemoglobin are proteins inside red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues while bring carbon dioxide back to the lungs. When the athlete come back to normal elevation level, he or she usually holds an advantage over their competition due to their temporary elevated hemoglobin …
