Morphology Of Human Myoblasts In Cultured Muscle Cells By The Novel Small Molecule Sgi, Ryan Matekel, Robert Hyldahl 2016 Brigham Young University

Morphology Of Human Myoblasts In Cultured Muscle Cells By The Novel Small Molecule Sgi, Ryan Matekel, Robert Hyldahl

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Muscle wasting is a symptom of cancer, AIDS, renal failure, heart failure, aging, prolonged bed rest, and has been seen in rodent models for burn, and kidney disease (Han, 2013). Muscle wasting negatively impacts quality of life by decreasing functional independence and increasing morbidity and mortality (Anker, 1997). Muscle wasting is an especially serious issue given that the body weight of an average human is 40-50 percent skeletal muscle (Han, 2013). Myostatin is a protein that negatively regulates muscle mass and is primarily expressed within skeletal muscle (Lee & McPherron, 2001). Genetic studies have shown that inhibition of myostatin signaling …

Effect Of Myostatin Pathway Inhibition On Fibroblast Activity Using A Novel Small Molecule, Seth Hampton, Dr. Robert Hyldahl 2016 Brigham Young University

Effect Of Myostatin Pathway Inhibition On Fibroblast Activity Using A Novel Small Molecule, Seth Hampton, Dr. Robert Hyldahl

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Fibroblasts play a key role in repairing injured tissue by secreting collagen and growth factors into the tissue. In states of disease and overuse, fibroblast activity can become overly abundant and can lead to skeletal muscle fibrosis, decreasing strength and muscle elasticity. This fibrotic condition can lead to muscle wasting disorders, such as muscular dystrophies, that severely decrease the length and quality of life. Previous studies have shown that the TGF-beta signaling family directly increases fibroblast proliferation. It has also been shown that inhibition of myostatin, a member of the TGF-beta family, reduces symptoms of muscular dystrophies and decreases fibrosis. …

Evidence For Regulatory T Cell In Skeletal Muscle Repair, Amanda Gier, Robert Hyldahl 2016 Brigham Young University

Evidence For Regulatory T Cell In Skeletal Muscle Repair, Amanda Gier, Robert Hyldahl

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Testing multiple immunohistochemistry protocols, I was unsuccessful at identifying Tregulatory cells in human skeletal muscle samples. A total of 5 months was dedicated to this original project before I was reassigned to look into the presence of CD8+ cells in skeletal muscle. The new project proved to be fruitful as I was able to confidently identify CD8+ cells and analyze their presence in the process of skeletal muscle repair. Furthermore, the data I collected has be incorporated into a paper Dr. Robert Hyldahl is currently working on titled “Skeletal muscle inflammation following repeated bouts of lengthening contractions in humans.”

Foot Strike Angle Changes During Shod, Minimalist, And Barefoot Running, And Correlation To Injury, Ani Henriksen, Dr. Sarah Ridge 2016 Brigham Young University

Foot Strike Angle Changes During Shod, Minimalist, And Barefoot Running, And Correlation To Injury, Ani Henriksen, Dr. Sarah Ridge

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Running is a popular form of exercise. With high incidence of injury, runners are always looking for the next cure to stay injury free. Many webpages offer conflicting advice about shoes and foot strike. Although recommendations vary, barefoot running and use of minimalist shoes has increased. With the change in footwear, many runners have reported injuries from improper technique and repetitive loading. With the use of current technology we analyzed movements of the foot ignored by other studies. This project analyzed foot strike movement in the frontal plane to help us better understand the ideal foot strike technique for running …

Volumetric Flow Imaging Reveals The Importance Of Vortex Ring Formation In Squid Swimming Tail-First And Arms-First, Ian K. Bartol, Paul S. Krueger, Rachel A. Jastrebsky, Sheila Williams, Joseph T. Thompson 2016 Old Dominion University

Volumetric Flow Imaging Reveals The Importance Of Vortex Ring Formation In Squid Swimming Tail-First And Arms-First, Ian K. Bartol, Paul S. Krueger, Rachel A. Jastrebsky, Sheila Williams, Joseph T. Thompson

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Squids use a pulsed jet and fin movements to swim both arms-first (forward) and tail-first (backward). Given the complexity of the squid multi-propulsor system, 3D velocimetry techniques are required for the comprehensive study of wake dynamics. Defocusing digital particle tracking velocimetry, a volumetric velocimetry technique, and high-speed videography were used to study arms-first and tail-first swimming of brief squid Lolliguncula brevis over a broad range of speeds [0-10 dorsal mantle lengths (DML) s-1) in a swim tunnel. Although there was considerable complexity in the wakes of these multi-propulsor swimmers, 3D vortex rings and their derivatives were prominent reoccurring features …

COBRA Preprint Series

Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is a widely used machine learning algorithm for dimension reduction of large-scale data. It has found successful applications in a variety of fields such as computational biology, neuroscience, natural language processing, information retrieval, image processing and speech recognition. In bioinformatics, for example, it has been used to extract patterns and profiles from genomic and text-mining data as well as in protein sequence and structure analysis. While the scientific performance of NMF is very promising in dealing with high dimensional data sets and complex data structures, its computational cost is high and sometimes could be critical for …

Mastoid Vibration Affects Dynamic Postural Control During Gait, Jung Chien, Mukul Mukherjee, Nicholas Stergiou 2016 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Mastoid Vibration Affects Dynamic Postural Control During Gait, Jung Chien, Mukul Mukherjee, Nicholas Stergiou

Journal Articles

Our objective was to investigate how manipulating sensory input through mastoid vibration (MV) could affect dynamic postural control during walking, with and without simultaneous manipulation of the visual and the somatosensory systems. We used three levels of MV (none, unilateral, and bilateral) via vibrating elements placed on the mastoid processes. We combined this with the six conditions of the Locomotor Sensory Organization Test (LSOT) paradigm to challenge the visual and somatosensory systems. We hypothesized that MV would affect both amount and temporal structure measures of sway variability during walking and that, in combination with manipulations of the visual and the …

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Rehabilitation Efficacy In Chronic 1 Ankle Instability, Cynthia J. Wright, Shelley W. Linens, Mary Spencer Cain 2016 Whitworth University

A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Rehabilitation Efficacy In Chronic 1 Ankle Instability, Cynthia J. Wright, Shelley W. Linens, Mary Spencer Cain

Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship

There is minimal patient-oriented evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions targeted to reduce symptoms associated with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Additionally, clinicians aiming to prioritize care by implementing only the most effective components of a rehabilitative program have very little evidence on comparative efficacy. The objective of this research report is to assess the comparative efficacy of two common ankle rehabilitation techniques [wobble board (WB) balance training and ankle strengthening using resistance tubing (RT)] using patient-oriented outcomes.

Because serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) has been used to reflect articular cartilage condition, we aimed to identify walking and running mechanics that are associated with changes in serum COMP. Eighteen subjects (9 male, 9 female; age = 23 ± 2 yrs.; mass = 68.3 ± 9.6 kg; height = 1.70 ± 0.08 m) completed 4000 steps on an instrumented treadmill on three separate days. Each day corresponded to a different ambulation speed: slow (preferred walking speed), medium (+50% of slow), and fast (+100% of slow). Synchronized ground reaction force and video data were collected to evaluate walking mechanics. …

Chapter 5: Surrogation, Sara A. Myers 2016 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Chapter 5: Surrogation, Sara A. Myers

Journal Articles

One of the goals of time series analysis is to understand the underlying mechanisms that generate different dynamics for different time series. If a time series is not a product of random process, then we can assume that some kind of dynamics govern the time series. The question is what kinds of dynamics are controlling the time series. For nonlinear time series analysis, our focus is on nonlinear dynamics, and one of the goals is to characterize those dynamics by applying nonlinear tools. However, it is important to establish evidence of nonlinearity in a time series first in order to …

Chapter 2: Time Series, Sara A. Myers 2016 University of Nebraska at Omaha

Chapter 2: Time Series, Sara A. Myers

Journal Articles

Time series is “simply a list of numbers assumed to measure some process sequentially in time” (Stergiou et al. 2004). Mathematicians have a more formal definition, that is, a set or a sequence of observations, with each one recorded at specific times, or at least sequentially (Brockwell and Davis 2002; Box et al. 2008). Time series are created from multiple sources for research purposes to understand various behaviors. For example, social scientists could collect graduation rates, physiologists record heart rates, economists study consumer spending, and climatologists examine weather patterns. Basically, any time observations are taken repeatedly over time, from any …
