The Reel Deal: The Stacked Benefits Of A Reel Mower, John K. Hix, Simone Bailey
Advances in Clinical Medical Research and Healthcare Delivery
"Mow-lawning" is a colloquial term referred to actively cutting grass using a reel mower, typically at a faster than normal pace in order to maximize exercise benefit and minimize time, with the emphasis on the physical action of mowing and only secondarily on the resulting lawn care. While mow-lawning remains relatively uncommon in the United States, adoption of this practice by those healthy enough to engage in the level of exercise required can deliver a number of benefits that improve environmental, safety, and personal goals simultaneously. The stacking of so many benefits in one practice deserves more attention and promotion.

Movement Patterns During Functional Activities In People With Chronic Low Back Pain, Quenten Lowell Hooker
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
People with chronic LBP display an altered movement pattern where the lumbar spine moves more readily than other joints that can contribute to the activity. The pattern is of particular clinical relevance because across multiple studies the magnitude of altered pattern is associated with LBP and function. One session of motor skill training (MST) during functional activities can improve the altered pattern. However, of the few studies investigating MST for people with LBP, none have examined the short-term or long-term effects of MST on the altered pattern. Additionally, no study has systematically examined if person-specific characteristics moderate the altered pattern …

Shear Wave Propagation Speeds And Estimation Of Mechanical Properties In Soft, Fibrous, Nonlinear Anisotropic Materials, Zuoxian Hou
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
The mechanical properties of brain tissue may reflect or influence growth, remodeling, development, aging, and disease. However, brain tissue, especially white matter, is structurally anisotropic and has nonlinear strain-stress relationships, so common methods are not very useful to describe the mechanical properties of brain tissue. Magnetic resonance elastography (MRE), based on the MRI imaging technique, can be used for measuring tissue mechanical properties non-invasively. Therefore, the mathematical model that describes the relation between wave speed and tissue mechanical properties will essentially influence the accuracy of the prediction. The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the relationship between shear wave …

International Journal of Exercise Science 14(7): 1036-1051, 2021. In athletic populations, compression socks (CS) may improve exercise performance recovery. However, their potential to improve performance and/or recovery following exercise in non-athletic populations is unknown. Our study evaluated the effects of CS on exercise performance and recovery from a graded maximal treadmill test. Insufficiently active adults (n = 10, 60% female, average physical activity ~60 minutes/week) performed two graded maximal exercise tests; one while wearing below-knee CS, and the other trial with regular socks (CON). Order of trials was randomized. For both trials, heart rate, lactate, and rating of perceived …

Muscle strength (MS) has been associated with cardiometabolic risk factors (CMR) in adolescents, however, the impact attributed to body size in determining muscle strength or whether body size acts as a confounder in this relationship remains controversial. We investigated the association between absolute MS and MS normalized for body size with CMR in adolescents. This was a cross-sectional study comprising 351 adolescents (44.4% male; 16.6 ± 1.0 years) from Brazil. MS was assessed by handgrip and normalized for body weight, body mass index (BMI), height, and fat mass. CMR included obesity, high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, glucose imbalance, and high inflammation …

Deception Of Resistance And The Effects On Muscular Fitness And Perceived Exertion, Tyler Mchenry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Resistance training has been a popular tactic that individuals have used to increase muscular fitness for decades. Muscular fitness includes muscular endurance, strength, and power. However, limitations such as self-efficacy and the Central Governor Theory may influence individual maximal performance ability. One training tactic that has been rarely researched is the deception of resistance during exercise, which is assumed to increase performances in all aspects of muscular fitness and improvements in perceived effort. Inconsistent results have been concluded from previous studies that have examined the same topic. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resistance …

Many diseases, disabilities, and mental health conditions associated with aging can be delayed or prevented through regular exercise. Several barriers to exercise, many of which are exacerbated in rural communities, prevent mid-life and older adults from accessing its benefits. However, recently, a racquet sport named pickleball has become popular among older adults, and it appears to overcome some of these barriers. We conducted a feasibility study to evaluate the impact of a six-week pickleball intervention on measures of muscle function, cognitive function, perceived pain, and cardio-metabolic risk, as well as several psychosocial factors contributing to adherence in sedentary rural participants. …

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) declines with advancing age and is a predictor of morbidity and mortality risk. The purpose here was to assess the utility of constant load tests performed either above or below peak work rate obtained from a graded exercise test for verification of VO2max in older adults. Twenty-two healthy older adults (9M, 13F, 67 ± 6 years, BMI: 26.3 ± 5.1 kg·m−2) participated in the study. Participants were asked to complete two experimental trials in a randomized, counterbalanced cross-over design. Both trials (cycle ergometer) consisted of (1) an identical graded exercise …

Sex Differences And Vascular Mechanisms Of Elevated Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Non-Hispanic Black Individuals, John David Akins
Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including hypertension, disproportionately affect the non-Hispanic black (BL) population in the United States. Despite being an inherently multifactorial process, altered vascular function remains a critical hallmark in the development of CVD. Further, blunted vascular function is often observed in the BL population. Recent advancements have linked several observational and mechanistic findings to the reduced vascular function in BL individuals, though the breadth of functional disparities in this population, the mechanistic contributors to these differences across sexes, and possible interventions to improve vascular function remain unelucidated. Therefore, this dissertation aimed to expand our current understanding of the vascular …

The embodied theory of tooling predicts that when using a grasped object as a tool, individuals accommodate their actions to manage the altered degrees of freedom in the body-plus-object system. We tested predictions from this theory by studying how 3 tufted capuchin monkeys (Sapajus spp.) and 6 humans (Homo sapiens) used a hoe to retrieve a token. The hoe’s handle was rigid, had 2 segments with 1 planar joint, or had 3 segments with 2 (orthogonal) planar joints. When jointed, rotating the handle could render it rigid. The monkeys used more actions to retrieve the token when the handle had …

Prolonged Load Carriage Impacts Magnitude And Velocity Of Knee Adduction Biomechanics, Gaervyn John Salverda
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Adopting knee adduction biomechanics during prolonged load carriage, a common military occupational activity, may increase service members knee osteoarthritis (OA) risk. Although service members reportedly increase knee adduction motions and moments during prolonged load carriage, it is unknown if either body borne load or walk duration increases velocity of knee adduction biomechanics, and subsequent knee OA risk. Varus thrust and alignment are also related to greater knee OA risk, yet it is unknown whether varus thrust and/or alignment are related to magnitude and velocity of knee adduction biomechanics during prolonged load carriage. Purpose: To determine whether body borne load …

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is characterized by the accumulation of atherosclerotic plaques in the lower extremity conduit arteries, which impairs blood flow and walking capacity. Dietary nitrate has been used to reduce blood pressure (BP) and improve walking capacity in PAD. However, a standardized dose for PAD has not been determined. Therefore, we sought to determine the effects of a body mass-normalized moderate dose of nitrate (0.11 mmol nitrate/kg) as beetroot juice on serum nitrate/nitrite, vascular function, walking capacity, and tissue oxygen utilization capacity in patients with PAD. A total of 11 patients with PAD received either nitrate supplement or …
