Overweightness continues to increase at an exponential rate in children. This coupled with the demand to increase academic time in elementary schools has contributed to efforts to discover solutions that meet both challenges. Potential solutions are movement curricula and active seating options. However, little has been published relative to best practices of their implementation. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the lessons learned while utilizing pedal desks in first and second grade classrooms as stations and whole class seating. Additionally, two different types of heart rate monitors (Polar Oh1 and IHT Spirit) were employed, in an attempt …

Background: In-season competition and tournaments for team sports can be both long and congested, with some sports competing up to three times per week. During these periods of time, athletes need to prepare technically, tactically and physically for the next fixture and the short duration between fixtures means that, in some cases, physical preparation ceases, or training focus moves to recovery as opposed to progressing adaptations. Objective: The aim of this review was to investigate the effect of training frequency on muscular strength to determine if a potential method to accommodate in-season resistance training, during busy training schedules, could be …

Validation Of A Single Channel Eeg For The Athlete: A Machine Learning Protocol To Accurately Detect Sleep Stages, Kayla Thompson, Kamil Celoch, Frankie Pizzo, Ana I. Fins, Jaime Tartar
Journal for Sports Neuroscience
There is a large and growing movement towards the use of wearable technologies for sleep assessment. This trend is largely due to the desire for comfortable, burden free, and inexpensive technology. In tandem, given the competitive nature of professional athletes enduring high training load, sleep is often jeopardized which can result in adverse outcomes. Wearable devices hold the promise of increasing the ease of monitoring sleep in athletes which can inform health and recovery status, as well as aid performance optimization. However, wearable devices typically lack sufficient validity to assess sleep – and especially sleep stages. To address this concern, …

Oversimplification Of The Relationship Between Ultrasound And Skinfold Measurements Of Subcutaneous Fat Thickness, Dale R. Wagner
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
In the March 2021 issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, two separate studies (1,2) from different research laboratories both used ultrasound to estimate body fat percentage (%BF). Both Chandler et al. (1) and Tinsley et al. (2) reported using a modification of the Jackson–Pollock (3) seven-site skinfold formula to convert their ultrasound fat thicknesses into estimates of body density and subsequently converted body density to %BF with the Siri (4) formula. Close inspection of their methods reveals that the only “modification” to the Jackson–Pollock equation was a doubling of the ultrasound fat thicknesses. Tinsley et al. …

Many older patients often suffer from walking issues such as Drop Foot. Drop Foot is caused by the malfunction of nerves in the foot, resulting in the loss of control of the front foot muscle. Within all of our patients, there has been a common fibular palsy, caused by the entrapment of the peroneal nerve. Due to this, they cannot lift up their foot. Some cases are permanent, while others are temporary. In the temporary cases, we have indicated a Phoenix Sign. The Phoenix Sign indicates that a nerve, presumed to be dead, has the capability to be recessed back …

Fatigue-Induced Sex Differences For Explosive Neuromuscular Characteristics Of The Plantar Flexors, Ben Dalton
Symposium of Student Scholars
Previous research on fatigue using isometric contractions suggests that females are more fatigue resistant than males, but less is clear regarding fatigue induced by dynamic contractions. PURPOSE: To determine sex differences for explosive voluntary neuromuscular characteristics of the plantar flexors (PFs) during a dynamic fatiguing task. METHODS: Recreationally active males (n=14; 22.4±2.2 yrs) and females (n=15; 20.9±2.5 yrs) performed a fatiguing task of the PFs consisting of 60 maximal isotonic contractions at 30% of their maximal isometric strength using a dynamometer. Peak power (PP), optimal velocity (OV), and optimal torque (OT) were calculated from the first five contractions of the …

Age-Related Reduction In High-Velocity Power And Myofiber Morphology And Composition, Ben Dalton
Symposium of Student Scholars
Power is diminished more dramatically at higher contraction velocities in older adults. It has been suggested that this may reflect age-related changes in single myofiber morphology or composition. PURPOSE: To examine power, muscle activation, and single myofiber morphology and composition between young (YM) and older (OM) males. METHODS: Power, or torque × velocity, was recorded during isokinetic knee extensions at 60°·s-1 and 180°·s-1 in healthy, untrained YM (n=15; 20.7±2.2 yrs) and OM (n=15; 71.6±3.9 yrs). The relative increase in power from 60°·s-1 to 180°·s-1 was recorded for each participant. Electromyography amplitude of the vastus lateralis (VL) …

International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 14(3): 1090-1098, 2021. The purpose of this investigation was to observe the effects of normobaric hypoxia on accumulated oxygen deficit (AOD) with evaluation using both Bayesian and Frequentist analyses. Eighteen recreationally active men performed a graded exercise test (GXT) in normobaric normoxia (N; FiO2~20%) and normobaric hypoxia (H; FiO2~14%) to determine peak power output (PPO). Time to exhaustion trials were later conducted at 110% and 120% PPO under both N, and H. AOD and %AN (% anaerobic energy contribution) were calculated in three conditions: N, H, and H using the N regression equation (HN). Bayesian …

Cross-Frequency Coupling Explains The Preference For Simple Ratios In Rhythmic Behaviour And The Relative Stability Across Non-Synchronous Patterns, Dobromir Dotov, Laurel Trainor
Journal Articles
Rhythms are important for understanding coordinated behaviours in ecological systems. The repetitive nature of rhythms affords prediction, planning of movements and coordination of processes within and between individuals. A major challenge is to understand complex forms of coordination when they differ from complete synchronization. By expressing phase as ratio of a cycle, we adapted levels of the Farey tree as a metric of complexity mapped to the range between in-phase and anti-phase synchronization. In a bimanual tapping task, this revealed an increase of variability with ratio complexity, a range of hidden and unstable yet measurable modes, and a rank-frequency scaling …

Orthopaedic surgery residency program directors (PDs) and candidates consider interviews to be central to the application process. In-person interviews are typical, but virtual interviews present a potentially appealing alternative. Candidate and PD expectations and perceptions of virtual interviews during the 2020/2021 orthopaedic surgery application cycle were assessed.
Methods: Candidates and PDs were surveyed electronically. Questions covered pre-virtual-interview and post-virtual-interview expectations and perceptions, and past in-person experiences (PDs and reapplicants) on the relative importance of application components, ability to assess fit, interview costs, and preferred interview mode. Identical questions allowed between-group comparisons.
Results: Responses included n = 29 PDs and n …

Effects Of Sensory Feedback And Collider Size On Reach-To-Grasp Coordination In Haptic-Free Virtual Reality, Mariusz P. Furmanek, Madhur Mangalam, Kyle Lockwood
Journal Articles
Technological advancements and increased access have prompted the adoption of head- mounted display based virtual reality (VR) for neuroscientific research, manual skill training, and neurological rehabilitation. Applications that focus on manual interaction within the virtual environment (VE), especially haptic-free VR, critically depend on virtual hand-object collision detection. Knowledge about how multisensory integration related to hand-object collisions affects perception-action dynamics and reach-to-grasp coordination is needed to enhance the immersiveness of interactive VR. Here, we explored whether and to what extent sensory substitution for haptic feedback of hand-object collision (visual, audio, or audiovisual) and collider size (size of spherical pointers representing the …
