Current And Future Molecular Approaches To Investigate The White Pine Blister Rust Pathosystem, B. A. Richardson, A. K. M. Ekramoddoulah, J.-J. Liu, M.-S. Kim, N. B. Klopfenstein 2010 USDA Forest Service

Current And Future Molecular Approaches To Investigate The White Pine Blister Rust Pathosystem, B. A. Richardson, A. K. M. Ekramoddoulah, J.-J. Liu, M.-S. Kim, N. B. Klopfenstein

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Molecular genetics is proving to be especially useful for addressing a wide variety of research and management questions on the white pine blister rust pathosystem. White pine blister rust, caused by Cronartium ribicola, is an ideal model for studying biogeography, genetics, and evolution because: (1) it involves an introduced pathogen; (2) it includes multiple primary and alternate hosts occurring in large, relatively undisturbed ecosystems; (3) some hosts exhibit endemic resistance; and (4) the disease interaction is long enduring. Molecular techniques are used to investigate population genetics, phylogenetics, hybrids, and proteomics in white pine (Pinus, subgenus Strobus) …

Blister Rusts In China: Hosts, Pathogens, And Management, X. Y. Zhang, Q. Lu, R. A. Sniezko, R. Q. Song, G. Man

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

China has 12 taxa of white pines (subgenus Strobus), including species of wide distribution valuable to plantation forestry and species of rare endemics only distantly related to other white pines. The most important forest diseases of these white pines are caused by the blister rust fungi of the genus Cronartium that alternate to telial host species of Ribes and Pedicularis. The most serious infestations have occurred in southwestern China on Pinus armandii and in northeastern China on P. koraiensis. The blister rust pathogen on P. armandii has usually been identified as Cronartium ribicola. Several lines of …

Effects Of Splat® Gm Sprayable Pheromone Formulation On Gypsy Moth Mating Success, Ksenia S. Onufrieva, Kevin W. Thorpe, Andrea D. Hickman, Patrick C. Tobin, Donna S. Leonard, E. Anderson Roberts 2010 Virginia Tech

Effects Of Splat® Gm Sprayable Pheromone Formulation On Gypsy Moth Mating Success, Ksenia S. Onufrieva, Kevin W. Thorpe, Andrea D. Hickman, Patrick C. Tobin, Donna S. Leonard, E. Anderson Roberts

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Several integrated pest management programs rely on the use of mating disruption tactics to control insect pests. Some programs specifically target non-native species, such as the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae). We evaluated SPLAT ® GM, a new sprayable formulation of the gypsy moth sex pheromone disparlure, for its ability to disrupt gypsy moth mating. The study was conducted in 2006, 2007, and 2008 in forested areas in Virginia, USA. Mating success of gypsy moth females was reduced by >99% and male moth catches in pheromone-baited traps by >90%, in plots treated with SPLAT ® GM at dosages ranging …

Patch Selection By Wintering White-Tailed Deer : Consequences For Eastern Hemlock Regeneration At Local And Landscape Scales, Jill Christine Witt 2010 Michigan Technological University

Patch Selection By Wintering White-Tailed Deer : Consequences For Eastern Hemlock Regeneration At Local And Landscape Scales, Jill Christine Witt

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Tsuga canadensis (eastern hemlock) is a highly shade-tolerant, late-successional, and long-lived conifer species found throughout eastern North America. It is most often found in pure or nearly pure stands, because highly acidic and nutrient poor forest floor conditions are thought to favor T. canadensis regeneration while simultaneously limiting the establishment of some hardwood species with greater nutrient requirements. Once a common species, T. canadensis is currently experiencing widescale declines across its range. The hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is decimating the population across its eastern distribution. Across the Upper Great Lakes region, where the adelgid is currently being …

Golden-Winged Warbler Habitat Model Validation For Northern Wisconsin And Central Minnesota, Alexandra E. Wrobel 2010 Michigan Technological University

Golden-Winged Warbler Habitat Model Validation For Northern Wisconsin And Central Minnesota, Alexandra E. Wrobel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Between 1966 and 2003, the Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) experienced declines of 3.4% per year in large parts of the breeding range and has been identified by Partners in Flight as one of 28 land birds requiring expedient action to prevent its continued decline. It is currently being considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act. A major step in advancing our understanding of the status and habitat preferences of Golden-winged Warbler populations in the Upper Midwest was initiated by the publication of new predictive spatially explicit Golden-winged Warbler habitat models for the northern Midwest. Here, I use …

Organic Materials: Sources Of Nitrogen In The Organic Production Of Lettuce, MAJA MANOJLOVIC, RANKO CABILOVSKI, MARTINA BAVEC 2010 TÜBİTAK

Organic Materials: Sources Of Nitrogen In The Organic Production Of Lettuce, Maja Manojlovic, Ranko Cabilovski, Martina Bavec

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This paper presents the results of 2 experiments: an incubation experiment and a subsequent field experiment. An incubation experiment was set up in order to determine the mineralization potential of different organic materials (OMs) (well-rotted farmyard manure [FTM], guano [G], soybean seed [S], and forage pea seed [P]), the kinetics of mineral nitrogen (N) release, and the correlation between OM content and the quantity of mineralized N. The results of the incubation experiment were checked under field conditions in which different OMs were used as N sources for lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.). The highest mineralization rate constant k (0.127 day^{-1}) …

The Effects Of Fiber Length And Fiber Loading On The Mechanical Properties Of Wood-Plastic (Polypropylene) Composites, FARSHID BASIJI, VAHIDREZA SAFDARI, AMIR NOURBAKHSH, SRIKANTH PILLA 2010 TÜBİTAK

The Effects Of Fiber Length And Fiber Loading On The Mechanical Properties Of Wood-Plastic (Polypropylene) Composites, Farshid Basiji, Vahidreza Safdari, Amir Nourbakhsh, Srikanth Pilla

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study examined the effects of wood pulp fiber length (short, medium, and long), and fiber loading (27%, 37%, 47%, and 0% [non-reinforced PP]) with 3% maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene on the mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites (WPCs). Polypropylene and fibers were compounded into pellets using a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder and test specimens were prepared by injection molding. The results show that increases in fiber length and fiber loading significantly increased (P < 0.05) the mechanical properties of the WPCs (MOE and tensile modulus). The behavior of the composites against MOR and impact strength varied according to fiber length and loading level. In general, the tensile strength was observed to be the same.

Does Treating Faba Bean Seeds With Chemical Inducers Simultaneously Increase Chocolate Spot Disease Resistance And Yield Under Field Conditions?, SALAH ELHENDAWY, WALEED SHABAN, JUN-ICHI SAKAGAMI 2010 TÜBİTAK

Does Treating Faba Bean Seeds With Chemical Inducers Simultaneously Increase Chocolate Spot Disease Resistance And Yield Under Field Conditions?, Salah Elhendawy, Waleed Shaban, Jun-Ichi Sakagami

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The use of chemical inducers for the development of host resistance is an alternative approach to plant disease management and is assumed to be much more environmentally sound than traditional pesticides. Five chemical inducers, salicylic acid, oxalic acid, ascorbic acid, dipotassium hydrogen phosphate (KH_2PO_4), and calcium chloride (CaCl_2), all at concentrations of 10 mM, and an untreated control treatment were applied by seed soaking to compare their effectiveness in inducing resistance against chocolate spot disease (Botrytis fabae Sard.) in faba bean under greenhouse and field conditions, and to investigate whether use of these chemicals in this way is associated with …

Estimation Of Effective Plant Area Index For South Korean Forests Using Lidar System, D. A. Kwak, W. K. Lee, Menas Kafatos, Y. Son, H. K. Cho, S. H. Lee

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) systems can be used to estimate both vertical and horizontal forest structure. Woody components, the leaves of trees and the understory can be described with high precision, using geo-registered 3D-points. Based on this concept, the Effective Plant Area Indices (PAIe) for areas of Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis), Japanese Larch (Larix leptolepis) and Oak (Quercus spp.) were estimated by calculating the ratio of intercepted and incident LIDAR laser rays for the canopies of the three forest types. Initially, the canopy gap fraction (GLiDAR) was generated by extracting the LiDAR data reflected from the canopy surface, or …
