Analysis Of The Effect Of Reasonable Close Planting On Respiration Characteristics Of Alfalfa(Medicago Sativa L.) Artificial Grassland, Zhuo Luo
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The degree of dense planting affects the respiration characteristics of alfalfa artificial grassland. In the process of alfalfa seed production, high plant and multibranch forage can be obtained by reasonable close planting. Therefore, an analysis method of the effect of reasonable close planting on respiration characteristics of garden alfalfa artificial grassland is put forward. In this method, the density characteristics of alfalfa planting were determined from three aspects of plant horizontal density, vertical density and three-dimensional density. The infrared carbon dioxide gas analyser was used to measure the carbon dioxide flux of the garden. The combined analysis method was constructed …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are essential players of plant defence systems because of their involvement in reprogramming gene expression under adverse environmental conditions including drought and heat, which are considered major players in limiting crop productivity. miR172b-3p was previously determined as a remarkable stress-responsive miRNA in our next-generation sequencing (NGS) analysis in potato. This study aims to understand the functions of miR172b-3p and its target (ERTF RAP2-7-like) under drought, heat, and combined treatments by overexpressing the miR172b-3p in stress-tolerant (Unica) and sensitive (Russet Burbank) potato cultivars. miR172b-3p overexpression in transgenic lines suppressed the ERTF RAP2-7-like expression leading to enhanced carbon fixation efficiency. …

It is known that a polymorphic population consisting of a large number of genotypes adapts more rapidly to the environment conditions. The availability of a large gene pool predetermines the success of the introduction and further breeding of new cultivars with economically valuable features. Morphometrics is a classical tool for studying the amplitude of the variability of cultivated plants and evaluating the genotypic diversity of the artificial population. The objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological parameters of Lonicera caerulea L. fruits for 26 genotypes from the population introduced in the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden (Kyiv). Morphological …

In canids, resident breeders hold territories but require different resources than transient individuals (i.e., dispersers), which may result in differential use of space, land cover, and food by residents and transients. In the southeastern United States, coyote (Canis latrans) reproduction occurs during spring and is energetically demanding for residents, but transients do not reproduce and therefore can exhibit feeding behaviors with lower energetic rewards. Hence, how coyotes behave in their environment likely differs between resident and transient coyotes. We captured and monitored 36 coyotes in Georgia during 2018–2019 and used data from 11 resident breeders, 12 predispersing residents (i.e., offspring …

Beaver Moderated Fire Resistance In The North Cascades And Potential For Climate Change Adaptation, Joseph John Weirich Iii
EWU Masters Thesis Collection
Climate change and fire suppression have altered historic fire regimes, creating conditions for larger, more intense fires. Intense burns can alter watershed hydrology, increasing the potential for harmful channel incision, which impairs riparian ecosystem function by lowering the water table, disconnecting floodplains from aquatic environments. However, wetlands and functioning riparian zones can reduce burn intensity. Beaver, with their unique ability to build dams, can restore incised and degraded streams, store water, and expand wetland environments, potentially decreasing wildfire intensity, fire spread and create fire breaks across the landscape. My objective was to test the hypothesis that beaver impoundments increase landscape …

Sustainability And Economics Of White Oak (Quercus Alba) Timber Supply In Kentucky, Gaurav Dhungel
Theses and Dissertations--Forestry and Natural Resources
Sustained timber supply relies upon balanced forest age distribution, where the level of harvesting and mortality is compensated by regeneration and growth among younger age classes. However, current forest inventory trends from the white oak growing region reveal sustainability threat from declining white oak regeneration and recruitment leading to disproportionate inventory structure. Consequently, there exists growing concern among stakeholders on long-term sustainability of white oak timber and its economic implications, particularly in Kentucky, because of the significance of the species to the state’s economy. This research aims to examine past and current inventory levels of white oak in Kentucky using …

Southern Pine Beetle-Specific Rna Interference Demonstrates No Effects On Nontarget Insects, Hannah Marie Hollowell
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
The endemic southern pine beetle (SPB), Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann, is a highly destructive bark beetle that has devastated coniferous forests of the southern United States for decades. Traditional management strategies have been unable to respond effectively to largescale SPB outbreaks, prompting exploration of novel techniques including RNA interference (RNAi). Double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) are effective at triggering gene silencing and inducing mortality in SPB, but determining delivery methods and demonstrating specificity of the treatments is necessary before this technology may progress to deployment.
I evaluated three SPB-specific dsRNAs on model nontarget insects to assess potential lethal effects, sublethal effects such as …

Impacts Of Forest Tax Programs On Property Tax Rates In Michigan's Upper Peninsula And Northern Wisconsin, Elsa Schwartz
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Forest tax programs offer reduced property taxes to private forest owners as incentive to sustainably manage their forests and to encourage the provision of ecosystem services. They also protect forests from conversion to other land uses and ensure the viable supply of timber for forest products industries. Despite the benefits that these programs provide, they can negatively impact local municipalities by reducing the property tax base, which can then cause local governments to increase tax rates for non-preferential properties in order to maintain revenue needed to run their services. This shifts the tax burden from participating properties to nonparticipating properties. …

Understory Dynamics Across 62-Years Of A Northern Hardwood Management Gradient Study, Heidi Harmala
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Northern hardwood selection silviculture relies on the perpetuation of natural regeneration. However, many researchers and forest managers have concerns about deficiencies in regeneration and the associated ingrowth and recruitment of advance regeneration under single-tree selection. Given the differences of management application in the Great Lakes region, long-term studies and datasets are critical to understanding of how these systems function and change. Using the Cutting Methods Study, in the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan, these concerns were investigated with a multi-decadal dataset, for understory tree species composition and density, diversity, recruitment, and age-diameter relationships across management methods. In response to the …

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
For more than a decade intensive research on the ecohydrology of black ash wetland ecosystems has been performed to understand these systems before they are drastically altered by the invasive species, emerald ash borer (EAB). In that time there has been little research aimed at the scale and persistence of the alterations. Three distinct but related research articles will be presented to demonstrate a method for moderate resolution mapping of black ash across its entire range, understand the relative impacts of EAB and climate change on probable future wetland conditions, and develop an experimental and modeling approach to quantify and …
Effects Of Methyl Jasmonate On Quality Properties And Phytochemical Compounds Of Kiwifruit (Actinidia Deliciosa Cv. `Hayward') During Cold Storage And Shelf Life, Burhan Öztürk, Furkan Yücedağ
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The research aimed to assess the effects of methyl jasmonate (0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 mM MeJA) on weight loss and phytochemical compounds of kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa cv. `Hayward') throughout the cold storage and shelf life. Kiwifruits were stored at 0 ± 0.5 °C and 90 ± 5% RH for 180 days, and at 20 ± 1.0 °C and 80 ± 5% RH for 5 days in shelf life conditions. During cold storage, weight loss was significantly lower (P < 0.05) in 0.25 and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments than those of control and 0.5 mM MeJA treatments. The highest flesh firmness was determined in MeJA-treated fruits. In the latest measurement period of cold storage and shelf life, the lowest respiration rate was obtained from 0.5 and 1.0 mM MeJA treatments. MeJA-treated fruits had significantly higher hue angle at the end of cold storage. Generally, in shelf life analysis, acidity of MeJA-treated fruits was significantly lower than that of control fruits. At the end of cold storage, the highest vitamin C, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity (DPPH) were measured in 1.0 mM MeJA treatment, whereas the highest total phenolics were detected in 0.25 mM MeJA treatment. Present findings revealed that MeJA could be used as an effective postharvest tool to maintain flesh firmness and phytochemical compounds of kiwifruits.

Influence Of Different Drying Methods And Cold Storage Treatments On The Postharvestquality And Nutritional Properties Of P. Ostreatus Mushroom, Beyhan Ki̇bar
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was conducted to determine the effects of different drying methods and cold storage treatments on the postharvest quality and nutritional properties of P. ostreatus mushroom. In the study, six different treatments including natural drying, oven drying (60 °C), microwave drying (450 W), storage at -18 °C, 4 °C and 10 °C were evaluated. After drying and cold storage, pH value, ash, protein, color, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and element contents in mushroom samples were detected. According to findings obtained from the study, drying and cold storage treatments significantly (p < 0.01) affected the postharvest quality and nutritional composition of P. ostreatus. The protein content, ash content, L* color value, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity and essential mineral contents such as potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese of P. ostreatus decreased after drying and cold storage compared to the fresh mushroom sample. As a result, the best treatment was determined as storage at 4 °C in terms of protection the quality and nutritional value of P. ostreatus during postharvest storage. In addition, natural drying was the most effective treatment among drying methods, and it can be used successfully for longterm storage of this mushroom. However, it was concluded that microwave drying method was not suitable for the preservation of P. ostreatus since it caused significant nutrient and quality losses. The results of the present study will provide useful information about postharvest preservation and processing of P. ostreatus for researchers working on this issue.
