Long Term, Continuous Temperature Monitoring Of A Simple Anaerobic Digester And Open Manure Storage Pond In Eastern South Dakota, J. Darrington, E. Cortus
The Journal of Undergraduate Research
A two-cell manure storage system with a cover on the first cell was constructed in the late summer of 2009 in Eastern South Dakota. The covered cell acts as a simple anaerobic digester. Continuous temperature monitoring for 8 months shows the winter effluent temperature equilibrated to around 6°C, and that the effluent temperature trend lagged the ambient temperature trend by a month. Manure composition was also analyzed and was found to be relatively steady throughout the system. Volatile solids were the only component that dropped appreciably across the treatment cell, with an observed maximum of 50% reduction.

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Household-level Canadian meat purchases from 2002-2008, a Food Opinions Survey conducted in 2008 at the national level and household-level egg purchases from 2002-2005 in Alberta and Ontario were used to explore consumer responses to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada.
The opinions survey focused on nutritional priorities, general and specific food safety concerns, and trust in government and food industry decision makers. The egg data set contained specific product information allowing us to distinguish purchases of conventional eggs from those of value-added eggs with perceived health attributes. Thus, the egg purchase data appeared to be an interesting proxy of revealed …

Corn Water Use And Yield For Various Limited Irrigation Treatments, Simon Van Donk, Don Davison, Jim Peterson
West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte
With limited water resources, it becomes more critical to know how much and when to irrigate. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the amount and timing of irrigation on corn (Zea mays L.) yield using subsurface drip irrigation (SDI). A field study was conducted at North Platte, Nebraska in 2007 - 2009, using two SDI systems. The study was replicated eight times on the older SDI system (SDI1) and four times on the newer SDI system (SDI2). On SDI1, there were nine treatments to impose different irrigation regimes, ranging from dryland to fully …

Triticale was seeded at 200, 300, 500, and 650 seed m^{-2}. Plots were harvested when …
Some Characteristics Of The Stagnation Stage In The Development Of Silver Fir (Abies Alba Mill.) Trees In Selection Forests In Serbia, Damjan Pantic, Stanisa Bankovic, Milan Medarevic, Snezana Obradovic
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A period of stagnation in silver fir development has been recorded in all felled trees in selection forests of Serbia (233 trees on Mt. Goc and 451 trees on Mt. Tara). In the selection forests on Mt. Goc, the stagnation stage ranges between 40 and 330 years, but on Mt. Tara, it ranges from 15 to 185 years. It was concluded that the duration was caused not by the ecological and productivity potential (site class) of the soil for fir development, but primarily by the growth space, resulting from the application of single-tree selection or group selection systems. It was …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Tomato is one of the most widely produced and consumed vegetable crops worldwide. Plant breeders have usually focused on improvement of horticulturally important traits such as yield, fruit size, shape and colour. With increased attention on human health, however, plant breeders also consider the improvement of health-related traits of fruits and vegetables such as antioxidant characters. In the present study, genes controlling both health-related and horticulturally important traits were mapped in the tomato genome using 152 Lycopersicon hirsutum BC_2F_2 individuals. For this aim, all plants were phenotypically and genotypically characterised and a total of 75 QTLs were identified for all …
