Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Dairy and meat production in dry regions is very complex due to low quality and shortage of fodder, especially in dry periods. Livestock scientists are eager to explore and investigate good-quality fodders that can boost milk and meat production in an organic and economical way. Some organic meals like soybean, cotton seed cake, and range grasses are being utilized to overcome the fodder shortage. These have some limitations, however, like unavailability in December through May as currently green fodder is least available after wheat, alfalfa, brassica, and maize harvesting. This leads towards reduced livestock production and low-quality milk and meat …

Long-Term Water Balance Of A Bare Soil With Slope In Chuncheon, South Korea, Mehmet Aydin, Yeong-Sang Jung, Jae E. Yang, Hyun-Il Lee
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Water balance components of a bare soil with slope varying from 5% to 30% in Chuncheon, South Korea, were simulated using the E-DiGOR model, which proposed an interactive way to quantify runoff, drainage, soil water storage, and evaporation. Daily computations were carried out during the period of 1980 to 2009 for the identified soil-topography-climate combination. A strong correlation between measured pan evaporation and calculated potential soil evaporation was observed (R^2 = 63.8%, P < 0.01) based on the monthly data of the past 30 years (hereafter 'long-term'). When examining long-term dynamics of simulated soil evaporation, monthly mean potential and actual soil evaporations ranged from 9.1 and 9.0 mm in December to 110.5 and 75.2 mm in June and July, respectively. The ratio of actual to potential soil evaporation (E_a/E_p) had a close linkage with soil water content. The higher the soil water amount, the greater the E_a/E_p ratio was. A nonlinear relationship between rainfall and surface runoff was obtained at a given slope. Excess surface runoff and subsurface flow (percolation + interflow) occurred throughout the rainy months from July to September, with peaks in July. The ratio of direct surface runoff to rainfall increased with the natural logarithm of slope. The long-term mean annual direct surface runoff and subsurface flow at the maximum slope were 408.1 and 437.6 mm, respectively. Furthermore, mean annual surface runoff from the slope of 30% was approximately 2 times higher than that from the slope of 5%.

The aim our research was to develop effective methods for organic apple farming, based on the use of plant extracts to control the asexual reproduction of Venturia inaequalis. Plant extracts of artemisinin, chelidonine, thymol, and populin tested in vitro under laboratory conditions significantly slowed down the germination of V. inaequalis conidia. During a 2-year study under field conditions, the effect of 1% populin, an extract from black poplar buds, on apple scab was tested in parallel with synthetic fungicides and a no-pesticide regime on Golden Delicious and Jonathan apples. Populin significantly reduced the number of scabbed leaves and fruits on …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Being faced with practical problems in pest identification, we present a methodical paper based on artificial neural networks to discriminate morphologically very similar species, Thrips sambuci Heeger, 1854 and Thrips fuscipennis Haliday, 1836 (Thysanoptera: Thripinae), as an applied case for more general use. The artificially intelligent system may be successfully applied as a credible, online, semiautomated identification tool that extracts hidden information from noisy data, even when the standard characters have much overlap and the common morphological keys hint at the practical problem of high morphological plasticity. Statistical analysis of 17 characters, measured or determined for each Thrips fuscipennis and …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Data from stem analysis of 397 dominant trees (198 Scots pine and 199 Oriental beech) were used to evaluate dynamic base-age invariant site index models derived from Bertalanffy-Richards, Hossfeld, and Lundqvist-Korf functions with the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) for mixed Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stands. These functions were compared with respect to residuals of these models; specifically, the evaluation criteria were bias (E), root mean square error (RMSE), absolute mean error (AME), adjusted coefficient of determination (R^2_{adj}), and Akaike information criterion. The best results were obtained with generalized algebraic difference equations derived …

Mechanical Properties Of Heat-Treated Wooden Material Utilized In The Construction Of Outdoor Sitting Furniture, Nurgül Tankut, Ali̇ Naci̇ Tankut, Mustafa Zor
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The present study examined the bending moment capacity and rigidity of T-type out-of-plane furniture joints and investigated the effects of heat treatment, wood species, and joint type factors on these joints. Heat treatment method clearly decreased the modulus of rupture (MOR) and the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of selected wood species. The bending strength of wood samples was reduced after the heat treatment, decreasing with increased loss of mass. For the heat-treated T-type joints, maximum bending strength values were obtained with Iroko (Chlorophora excelsa) for both mortise and tenon (MT) joints and blind MT (BMT) joints. The lowest reduction in …

Cereal cyst nematodes (CCNs) are plant parasites that significantly limit global cereal production. The most frequently reported pathogenic species are Heterodera avenae, H. filipjevi, and H. latipons. One of the most cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and easily adopted control measures is the use of genetic host resistance, which maintains nematode populations below the economic damage threshold level. Many effective sources of resistance to CCNs have been identified in cereals; however, their effectiveness and usefulness is dependent on the interaction of the specific putative resistant accession and the CCN pathotype found in a specific region. In this study, 719 wheat lines from …

The Choice Of Auxin Analogue For In Vitro Root Induction Influences Post-Induction Root Development In Eucalyptus Grandis, Muhammad Nakhooda, Maria Paula Watt, David Mycock
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Previous studies on in vitro rooting for improved micropropagation of eucalypts indicated that root graviperception and post-acclimatisation architecture are determined by the relative exogenous auxin analogue and its stability, supplied during the pre-rooting culture stages. The specific roles of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) in the rooting medium on the in vitro root morphological processes were explored using a good-rooting clone. In vitro rooting percentage was significantly reduced when either of the auxin inhibitors 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) and ρ-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid (PCIB) or the auxin antagonist kinetin was supplied at rooting, with or without exogenous auxin. For all treatments, …
