Ethanol, Gasoline And Ethanol Prices, Richard K. Perrin

Cornhusker Economics

The price of crude oil took a steep dive last year, plunging from $95 per barrel just a year ago to the low $40-range by December, where they remain today (Figure 1). Goldman Sachs has recently suggested that it could drop further, even into the $20 range. Low oil prices mean low gasoline and ethanol prices.

This study presents key components of the structure of agriculture in South Dakota. As a major industry in South Dakota, agriculture plays a pivotal role in the overall vitality of the economy. Agriculture in South Dakota spans many industries, including the production of agricultural commodities, food and feed processing, agricultural input manufacturing, agri-business, and other agricultural-based industries. This report is based on data from the Census of Agriculture. The report presents long-term trends for farm numbers, the number of operators, land use, and other important characteristics of agriculture. The study emphasizes family farms, because they will continue to dominate the …

Spatio-Temporal Distribution Of Stored-Product Insects With Emphasis On Red Flour Beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) In Rice Mills And On-Farm Storage Facilities, Martine Patiance Bowombe Toko 2015 Arkansas State University

Spatio-Temporal Distribution Of Stored-Product Insects With Emphasis On Red Flour Beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) In Rice Mills And On-Farm Storage Facilities, Martine Patiance Bowombe Toko

Student Theses and Dissertations

Many stored-product insects were found associated in rice commercial mills and on-farm facilities. To better understand the seasonal and temporal distributions of stored-product insect at these facilities, I conducted two studies. A study over a three-year period (2012-2014) was conducted to examine red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) distributions at four rice mills. Beetles were captured using baited Dome traps placed inside and outside of mills. The second study was conducted over a two-year period (2013-1014) to estimate the abundance of red flour beetles and four other stored-product insects [cigarette beetle (Lasioderma serricorne), warehouse beetle (Trogoderma variabile), lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha …

A Historical Comparison Of Heifer Replacement Costs, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson 2015 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Historical Comparison Of Heifer Replacement Costs, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

The value of heifer replacements is an interesting question which is affected by time (e. g. future cattle prices), animal longevity and the individual production and management system of the cow-calf producer. If we ignore the differences among producers we can study the effects that price and longevity have on the net value of replacement animals.

Beer And Brewing In German Culture: Bridging The Gaps Within Steam, John D. Sundquist

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

A university-level course on science, history, and culture of beer and brewing offers students from a wide range of disciplines a unique opportunity to learn from each other. They gain an appreciation for STEAM and the interaction of a number of disciplines while examining a subject of growing interest. This paper provides a brief description of such a course and includes specific examples of ways in which students explore science, engineering, humanities and the arts, as these areas of research come together in the study of beer and brewing.

Seasonal Prevalence Of Shiga-Toxin Producing Escherichia Coli On Beef Cattle Farms In Eastern Arkansas, Tiffani Elizabeth Breckenridge 2015 Arkansas State University

Seasonal Prevalence Of Shiga-Toxin Producing Escherichia Coli On Beef Cattle Farms In Eastern Arkansas, Tiffani Elizabeth Breckenridge

Student Theses and Dissertations

Sixty-five million U.S. citizens become ill from foodborne bacteria annually; 73,000 of these bacterial illnesses are caused by Shiga-toxin producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157. Cattle are a reservoir of STEC; therefore, STEC contamination of beef is a significant food safety concern in the U.S. On-farm STEC control measures may reduce the incidence of contamination in processing facilities. The objective of this study was to determine prevalence of O157 and non-O157 STEC on beef cattle farms in eastern Arkansas, and to possibly identify farm management and/or environmental risk factors associated with STEC prevalence in cattle. Rectal swab samples (10 cows per …

Community Capitals Framework As A Measure Of Community Development, Daniela Mattos 2015 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Community Capitals Framework As A Measure Of Community Development, Daniela Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

Social and economic changes are transforming rural and regional communities, making critical the understanding of the dynamics of community change. Community development practitioners and researchers share the interest in the study and design of policies and programs intended to change rural communities positively. Community Capitals Framework (CCF) has become one of the primary research approaches in community analysis and development. This framework was first developed by Cornelia and Jan Flora (2013) as an alternative strategic planning and measurement approach, and has been used by groups such as the North Central Regional Center for Rural Development, Great Plains IDEA Community Development, …

Groundwater Chemistry Of The Weaber Plain (Goomig Farmlands): Baseline Results 2010–13, Adam Lillicrap, Richard J. George Dr, Arjen Ryder, D L. Bennett

Resource management technical reports

The Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) is located in the north-east of the Kimberley region of Western Australia, near the town of Kununurra. The irrigation area was established in 1963 and over time developed to the current extent of 14 000 hectares (ha). The Weaber Plain (Goomig Farmlands) area is located north-north-east of the existing irrigation area, 30km from Kununurra, and has been identified as being suitable for irrigated agriculture for many decades. However, it was not until 2009, with state government support, that the 7400ha project commenced, with construction starting in 2010. State and Australian government environmental approvals required …

Productivity Of Pre-Modern Agriculture In The Cucuteni-Trylillia Area, Anvar Shukurov, Mykhailo Videiko, Graeme Sarson, Kate Henderson, Robert Shiel, Pavel Dolukhanov, Galina Pashkevich

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

We present palaeoeconomy reconstructions for pre-modern agriculture; we select, wherever required, features and parameter values specific for the Cucuteni–Trypillia Cultural unity (CTU: 5,400–2,700 BC, mostly the territory of modern Ukraine, Moldova and Romania). We verify theself-consistency and viability of the archaeological evidence related to all major elements of the agricultural production cycle within the constraints provided by environmental and technological considerations. The starting point of our analysis is the palaeodiet structure suggested by archaeological data, stable isotope analyses of human remains, and palynology studies in the CTU area. We allow for the archeologically attested contributions of domesticated and wild animal …

Managing Precision Dairy Farming Technologies, Barbara Alice Wadsworth, Amanda Stone, Lauren M. Mayo, Nicky Tsai, Jeffrey M. Bewley 2015 University of Kentucky

Managing Precision Dairy Farming Technologies, Barbara Alice Wadsworth, Amanda Stone, Lauren M. Mayo, Nicky Tsai, Jeffrey M. Bewley

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Precision dairy farming is the use of technologies to measure physiological, behavioral, and production indicators of individual animals to improve management strategies and farm performance. These systems have the potential to detect disease and estrus and to evaluate cow comfort by monitoring activity, feeding time, lying time, mounting activity, real-time location, reticulorumen pH, rumination time, and body temperature.

The data provided by a precision dairy farming device is only valuable if it records the data properly for the right cow and is used by the producer. This factsheet will describe problems that researchers at the University of Kentucky have experienced …

Florida's Downtowns Are Free To Grow Local Broccoli…And Chickens (Sometimes), Sidney F. Ansbacher, Michael T. Olexa, Kathleen Maurer 2015 Florida A&M University College of Law

Florida's Downtowns Are Free To Grow Local Broccoli…And Chickens (Sometimes), Sidney F. Ansbacher, Michael T. Olexa, Kathleen Maurer

Florida A & M University Law Review

The United States Supreme Court in National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (Sebelius), famously invoked broccoli to limit the scope of Commerce Clause. All of the Justices used broccoli as a plot device to further their respective arguments answering whether the individual mandate to buy health insurance was constitutional. This article discusses the other end of the economic spectrum – local. We explicate Florida’s local government regulations of urban planting, growing, and selling of broccoli, as well as other fruits, vegetables, and animals. This requires a history of urban agriculture and local zoning laws before we discuss current laws …

Livestock Grazing On The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument: Its Importance To The Local Economy, Gil Miller, Kevin Heaton

All Current Publications

Livestock grazing on the GSENM provides significant economic benefits to Garfield and Kane Counties. If all Active and Suspended AUMs were utilized, there would be increased economic benefit. If ranching on the GSENM were lost, the economic sustainability in the Garfield-Kane Economic Region would be greatly reduced.
