Quantification Of Carbohydrates In Grape Tissues Using Capillary Zone Electrophoresis, Lu Zhao, Ann M. Chanon, Nabanita Chattopadhyay, Imed E. Dami, Joshua J. Blakeslee

Kentucky Tobacco Research and Development Center Faculty Publications

Soluble sugars play an important role in freezing tolerance in both herbaceous and woody plants, functioning in both the reduction of freezing-induced dehydration and the cryoprotection of cellular constituents. The quantification of soluble sugars in plant tissues is, therefore, essential in understanding freezing tolerance. While a number of analytical techniques and methods have been used to quantify sugars, most of these are expensive and time-consuming due to complex sample preparation procedures which require the derivatization of the carbohydrates being analyzed. Analysis of soluble sugars using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) under alkaline conditions with direct UV detection has previously been used …

Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen 2016 South Dakota State University

Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen

Economics Commentator (1972- 2016)

Value-added agriculture ventures are generally touted as being positive for a region’s economy. A product formerly shipped elsewhere may now be processed or modified locally or regionally, providing additional employment and related economic activity. Ethanol production, for example, disrupts the pattern of sending corn out of a region, but usually occurs where corn production is already prevalent. Consider, instead, the implications of a new livestock production facility. In this article, observations are made at the state and county levels related to livestock ventures. Kingsbury County is examined for potential effects on the production agriculture (or farming) sector. A livestock venture …

The cultivation procedure and the fungal strain applied for enzyme production may influence levels and profile of the proteins produced. The proteomic analysis data presented here provide critical informa- tion to compare proteins secreted by Trichoderma reesei and Aspergillus niger when cultivated through submerged and sequential fermenta- tion processes, using steam-explosion sugarcane bagasse as inducer for enzyme production. The proteins were organized according to the families described in CAZy database as cellulases, hemicellulases, proteases/peptidases, cell-wall-protein, lipases, others (catalase, ester- ase, etc.), glycoside hydrolases families, predicted and hypothetical proteins. Further detailed analysis of this data is provided in “Secre- tome analysis …

Long-Term Sandhills Prairie Responses To Precipitation, Temperature, And Cattle Stocking Rate, John A. Guretzky, Cheryl Dunn, Heidi L. Hillhouse 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Long-Term Sandhills Prairie Responses To Precipitation, Temperature, And Cattle Stocking Rate, John A. Guretzky, Cheryl Dunn, Heidi L. Hillhouse

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Understanding of Sandhills prairie, the most expansive sand dune region stabilized by perennial grasses in the Western Hemisphere, is limited by lack of long-term vegetation data. We used a 26-year dataset to evaluate Sandhills prairie responses to yearto- year variation in precipitation, temperature, and cattle stocking rate. Basal cover, a measurement that is constant seasonally and used to detect long-term changes in bunchgrass vegetation, was measured in 38–40 permanent plots positioned along four transects spanning 769 ha from 1979 to 2007. Across this period, total basal cover averaged 2.4 % and was dominated by warm-season grasses (81.1 %). Schizachyrium scoparium …

The Terroir Of Pinot Noir Wine In The Willamette Valley, Oregon : A Broad Analysis Of Vineyard Soils, Grape Juice And Wine Chemistry, Kathryn Nora Barnard 2016 Portland State University

The Terroir Of Pinot Noir Wine In The Willamette Valley, Oregon : A Broad Analysis Of Vineyard Soils, Grape Juice And Wine Chemistry, Kathryn Nora Barnard

Dissertations and Theses

Terroir is determined by a combination of factors in the vineyard including the grape varietal, geology and soil, soil hydrology, physiography, and climate. Although most studies have examined regional differences in wine flavors and associated provenance of wine based on chemistry, few have examined the chemistry of the soil and the ability to trace that chemistry to grape juice and, finally, to the wine. This dissertation examines what soil physical and chemical differences specific to this region might influence grape juice chemistry and wine chemistry.

Wine-grapes in the Willamette Valley, Oregon, are grown on three major soil parent materials: volcanic, …

Annual Forage Production Insurance, Jay Parsons 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Annual Forage Production Insurance, Jay Parsons

Cornhusker Economics

Annual crops planted for forage production are increasing throughout Nebraska. Historically, this production would have fallen outside of normal crop insurance coverage options. However, in 2014, the Annual Forage Insurance Plan was offered for the first time from the USDA - Risk Management Agency (RMA) as a pilot program for the states of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It was expanded to include Colorado in 2016.

Development Of A Laser Capture Microscope-Based Single-Cell-Type Proteomics Tool For Studying Proteomes Of Individual Cell Layers Of Plant Roots, Yingde Zhu, Hui Li, Sarabjit Bhatti, Suping Zhou, Yong Yang, Tara Fish, Theodore W. Thannhauser

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Single-cell-type proteomics provides the capability to revealing the genomic and proteomics information at cell-level resolution. However, the methodology for this type of research has not been well-developed. This paper reports developing a workflow of laser capture microdissection (LCM) followed by gel-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GeLC-MS/MS)-based proteomics analysis for the identification of proteomes contained in individual cell layers of tomato roots. Thin-sections (~10-μm thick, 10 sections per root tip) were prepared for root tips of tomato germinating seedlings. Epidermal and cortical cells (5000–7000 cells per tissue type) were isolated under a LCM microscope. Proteins were isolated and then separated by SDS–polyacrylamide …

The Farm Newsletter, Usu Student Organic Farm

USU Student Organic Farm Newsletter

We had a volunteer day this last week on Wednesday when about 12-15 people from a school in Brigham City showed up to help us on the farm. They were there for about three hours and during that time we were able to prepare nearly all of our seed beds and plant about a third of them. We were also able to set up the irrigation sprinklers so that we don't have to water by hand. Some of the remaining planting beds will also be seeded, but the majority are for transplants from the greenhouse. We have been able to …

Ttip And Agricultural Trade: The Case Of Tariff Elimination And Pesticide Policy Cooperation, Bo Xiong, John C. Beghin 2016 Zhejiang University

Ttip And Agricultural Trade: The Case Of Tariff Elimination And Pesticide Policy Cooperation, Bo Xiong, John C. Beghin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

A possible Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) agreement will further integrate agricultural markets between the United States and the European Union. The elimination of tariffs and cooperation on sanitary and phytosanitary measures will promote cross-Atlantic trade. We empirically estimate the impacts of tariffs and Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) on trade in plant products between the two partners. Furthermore, we simulate trade expansions under plausible negotiation outcomes. We find that a TTIP agreement promotes cross-Atlantic trade in plant products, in both directions, by over 60% if tariffs are removed and MRLs are mutually recognized or harmonized to Codex levels.

Farmstead Planning: Old Farm Buildings Repurposed For Better Farming: How To Develop A Complex, Stephen F. Higgins, Lee Moser

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Farming is probably one of the most complex means of earning a living that has been devised. The many components of a farming operation that have to be managed would create an extensive list. Many beef cattle producers might focus on reproduction, nutrition, forages, health, and handling. However, there are many others operational considerations that are just as important.
