Fabrication And Characterization Of Polyglycerol Fatty Acid Ester/Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene Antifogging Film, Wei Lijuan, Yang Fuxin, Wu Jun, Xu Guangqian, Chen Jiyu, Wang Haili, Du Yunpeng

Food and Machinery

Objective The surfactant polyglycerol fatty acid ester (PGFE) was used for surface modification of biaxially oriented polypropylene film (BOPP) to perfect antifogging performance. Methods Used PGFE as an antifogging agent to prepared PGFE/BOPP antifogging film using a coating method. The present study was conducted to investigate the influence of different levels of PGFE on the antifogging performance, mechanical, optical, air and moisture permeability of BOPP film. Results Different levels of PGFE were coated on the film increased its tensile strength and haze, but reduced its light transmittance, oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability. The results showed that the PGFE/BOPP film …

Optimization Of Microwave Assisted Extraction Process Of Lignans In Cinnamomum Camphora Leaf, ZHOU Haixu, LI Zhonghai, ZHAN Ghui, LAI Yongjiao 2016 Central South University of Forestry and Technology, Changsha, Hunan 410004, China; Rice and By-products Processing National Engineering Laboratory, Changsha, Hunan 410004, China

Optimization Of Microwave Assisted Extraction Process Of Lignans In Cinnamomum Camphora Leaf, Zhou Haixu, Li Zhonghai, Zhan Ghui, Lai Yongjiao

Food and Machinery

An efficient microwave assisted extraction procedure for the lignans from the leaves of Cinnamomum camphora was investigated and optimized. Response surface methodology (RSM) based on a three-level four-factor Box Behnken Design (BBD) was employed to optimize the extraction conditions. The best extraction conditions were as follows: microwave time 5 min, ratio of material to ethanol 1∶26 (g/mL), ethanol concentration 80%, microwave temperature 60 ℃. Under the optimization conditions, the experimental yield of lignans was 42.69%, which was well matched with the predictive yield of 42.95%.

Farm Program Update: Arc And Plc Support, Bradley D. Lubben

Cornhusker Economics

As commodity prices have fallen substantially since 2012, crop revenue and farm income have suffered. To illustrate, the national marketing year average price for corn has fallen from a record high of $6.89 per bushel in the 2012/2013 marketing year to a projected $3.50 per bushel for the 2016/2017 marketing year, based on supply and demand estimates published by USDA in June. With similar price weakness across other crops, the impact on crop revenue and farm income has been dramatic. U.S. net farm income is projected to fall to $54.8 billion for 2016, more than 50% below the record $123.3 …

2016 Nebraska Farm Custom Rates Statewide Survey Summary, Jim Jansen, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Many Nebraska agricultural producers hire custom operators to perform machinery services for their farms and ranches across the state. The 2016 Nebraska Custom Rates Survey summarizes the current rates charged for specific machinery operations. Prices paid for these services become more critical as profit margins tighten because of lower commodity prices.

Exploration Of Chemical And Biological Management Strategies For Diaphorina Citri The Primary Vector Of Candidatus Liberibacter Asiaticus, Gretta Marie Sharp 2016 University of Texas at Tyler

Exploration Of Chemical And Biological Management Strategies For Diaphorina Citri The Primary Vector Of Candidatus Liberibacter Asiaticus, Gretta Marie Sharp

Biology Theses

Diaphorina citri (Hemipteran: Psyllidae), the Asian citrus psyllid, is a phloem-feeding, invasive species endemic to southern Asia that was first identified in the United States in Florida in 1998. Since introduction, D. citri has spread across the major citrus growing regions of the United States. This is of great concern to the citrus industry because D. citri is the primary vector of Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus the causal agent of Haunglongbing (HLB). Haunglongbing is the most economically devastating disease of citrus causing an estimated 8.92 billion dollars lost in revenue and 4.62 billion dollars lost in gross domestic product between 2006-2007 …

Burley tobaccos (Nicotiana tabacum) display a nitrogen-use-deficiency phenotype that is associated with the accumulation of high levels of nitrate within the leaf, a trait correlated with production of a class of compounds referred to as tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). Two TSNA species, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), have been shown to be strong carcinogens in numerous animal studies. We investigated the potential of molecular genetic strategies to lower nitrate levels in burley tobaccos by overexpressing genes encoding key enzymes of the nitrogen-assimilation pathway. Of the various constructs tested, only the expression of a constitutively active nitrate reductase (NR) …

Soluble sugars play an important role in freezing tolerance in both herbaceous and woody plants, functioning in both the reduction of freezing-induced dehydration and the cryoprotection of cellular constituents. The quantification of soluble sugars in plant tissues is, therefore, essential in understanding freezing tolerance. While a number of analytical techniques and methods have been used to quantify sugars, most of these are expensive and time-consuming due to complex sample preparation procedures which require the derivatization of the carbohydrates being analyzed. Analysis of soluble sugars using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) under alkaline conditions with direct UV detection has previously been used …

Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen 2016 South Dakota State University

Complex Effects Of Value-Added Livestock Ventures, Matthew A. Diersen

Economics Commentator (1972- 2016)

Value-added agriculture ventures are generally touted as being positive for a region’s economy. A product formerly shipped elsewhere may now be processed or modified locally or regionally, providing additional employment and related economic activity. Ethanol production, for example, disrupts the pattern of sending corn out of a region, but usually occurs where corn production is already prevalent. Consider, instead, the implications of a new livestock production facility. In this article, observations are made at the state and county levels related to livestock ventures. Kingsbury County is examined for potential effects on the production agriculture (or farming) sector. A livestock venture …
