The Identification Of Interspecific Hybrids Between Jaeger 70 X Vignoles Grapes Using Ssr Markers, Carl William Knuckles Iv

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Jaeger 70 cultivar is an interspecific hybrid of Vitis linececumii x Vitis rupestris, with an interesting past. It was created by Hermann Jaeger of Neosho, MO, who is most notable for saving the French wine industry by developing phylloxera resistant rootstocks in the mid-1800s. Traditionally the Jaeger 70 variety has been grafted to French wine grape cultivars to impart disease resistance and cold hardiness while retaining desirable wine characteristics. One interesting characteristic of Jaeger 70 is that it is a female-only plant, allowing for many interesting areas of study. Vitis interspecific hybrid Vignoles, is a cold hardy cultivar of largely …

Can Social Capital Boost Irrigation Capital: Empirical Evidence From North China, Yefan Nian 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Can Social Capital Boost Irrigation Capital: Empirical Evidence From North China, Yefan Nian

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using data from China Water Institution and Management (CWIM) survey, the study first constructs measures of all three most studied dimensions of social capital: trust, networks, and norms. The study then examines if social capital has any predictive powers of individual farmers’ contribution decisions as well as farmers’ contributions aggregated at the village level. Farmers’ choices between different forms of contributions (labor versus cash) are also analyzed. Our results suggest that all three dimensions of social capital explain farmers’ contribution decisions. Governance quality of local irrigation systems and the norm of cooperation have strong predictive powers of farmers’ decisions to …

Factors Driving Sugar Cane Production In The Kingdom Of Eswatini, Brooke Danielle Anderson 2018 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Factors Driving Sugar Cane Production In The Kingdom Of Eswatini, Brooke Danielle Anderson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Sugar cane is the largest industry in Eswatini with 16 percent of the total workforce working directly or indirectly in the sugar industry. Like all agricultural industries the sugar industry in Eswatini is heavily dependent on an abundant labor supply and climatic conditions. Labor efficiency and abundance is a defining factor of food security and profitability in Eswatini, having one of the highest national HIV/AIDS rates in the world. Small-scale sugar cane producers are often the hardest hit by HIV/AIDS as they traditionally rely on family labor more than hired labor. The 2016 Eswatini Vulnerability Assessment Report indicated that over …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Pesticide applications are a heavily scrutinized facet of today’s agricultural industry, and a concerted effort to optimize each application needs to be implemented. More precise and efficient pesticide applications are necessary to meet regulatory demands and increase economic efficiency through reduced pesticide inputs. Current pesticide application methods using precision technologies, including pulse-width modulation (PWM) sprayers, can assist with these goals. However, vast advancements in pesticide formulations, adjuvants, and nozzles, as well as the increasing popularity of PWM systems, have only increased the need for applied PWM and weed science research. Additionally, efforts have been placed on increasing spray droplet size …
