Food and Machinery
The volatile compounds in four parts of the citrus flowers (petals, torus, pistils, stamens) were analyzed by headspace-solidphase microextraction (HS-SPME) combined with GC-MS, the main aroma substances and aroma differences parts of citrus flowers were evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA). Studies showed that hydrocarbons and alcohols were the main aromas of citrus flowers. Linalool, terpene, nerolidol, β-myrcene and α-ocimene were mainly in petals, torus and pistils, while linalool, terpene, nerolidol and β-myrcene were the main components of stamens. The principal component analysis showed large differences of aroma compounds in the four parts of citrus blossoms. The hydrocarbons such as …

Food and Machinery
This study focuses on improvement mechanical properties of the zein films by glycosylation modifications under dry-heating conditions for capsule shells. The characterization of zein-inulin were analyzed by SDS-PAGE. DSC, FT-IR and SEM. The result indicates that the tensile strength of zein-inulin were 2.46 times of non-modifified zein. The formation of conjugates was verified by SDS-PAGE, infrared spectrum, and showed that the zein could joint the inulin by glycosylation with the covalent bound. The thermal denaturation temperature of zein was increased by DSC. It indicates that the thermal stability increases. Zein and zein-inulin films were scaned by SEM. The surface of …

To investigate the effects of silver carp hydrolysate on the quality and in vitro protein digestibility of surimi products. Different amounts (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%) of silver carp hydrolysate were added to surimi products. The qualities (including cooking loss, water retention, whiteness, gel strength, hardness, elasticity and sensory evaluation) and in vitro protein digestibility of the products after freeze-thaw treatments were investigated, and the surimi products added with traditional cryoprotectant (4% sucrose+4% sorbitol) as the comparison. The addition of 2% hydrolysate can increase water holding and decrease cooking loss, and effectively reduce the decrease of gel strength, hardness, elasticity and …

This study aimed at determining and mapping the spatial distribution of the variability in soil chemical properties of the agricultural floodplain lands of the Bara district in Nepal. The study was carried out in 23 Village Development Committees with 12,516 ha total area, in the southern part of the Bara district. A total of 109 surface soil samples (0 to 15 cm depth) were collected and analyzed for pH, organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P, expressed as P2 …

Several catastrophes could block the sun, including asteroid/comet impact, super volcanic eruption, and nuclear war with the burning of cities (nuclear winter). Previous work has analyzed alternate food supplies (e.g., mushrooms growing on dead trees, bacteria growing on natural gas). This was shown to be technically capable of feeding everyone with macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates, and lipids) and minerals, although economics and politics remain uncertain. The present work analyzes vitamin availability in such alternative food scenarios. The vitamin content of various alternate foods is compared to the US recommended daily allowance (RDA) as well as the average requirement defined by the …

Water-limiting conditions in many California vineyards necessitate assessment of vine water stress to aid irrigation management strategies and decisions. This study was designed to evaluate the utility of a Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) using multiple canopy temperature sensors and to study the diurnal signature in the stress index of an irrigated vineyard. A detailed instrumentation package comprised of eddy covariance instrumentation, ancillary surface energy balance components, soil water content sensors and a unique multi-canopy temperature sensor array were deployed in a production vineyard near Lodi, CA. The instrument package was designed to measure and monitor hourly growing season turbulent …

This appraisal attempts to remove subjectivity from the appraisal process and replace it with quantitative analysis of known data to generate a fair market value of the subject property. Two methods of appraisal were used, the income approach and the comparable sales approach. For the income approach, I used the average cash rent for the region, the current property taxes for the subject property, and a capitalization rate based on Stokes' (2018) capitalization rate formula to arrive at my income-based valuation. For the comparable sales approach, I utilized Stokes' (2018) research in optimization modeling to estimate a market value for …

Cornhusker Economics
The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) began issuing payments to producers in October for Price Loss Coverage (PLC) and Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) programs for the 2017 crop year. While these farm program payments had provided substantial cash flow to help buffer falling market price and farm income projections in the past three years, the current programs will provide relatively little cash flow for now and for the coming year. Only the ad hoc trade assistance payments and the outlook for new farm programs and decisions in 2019 may provide potential relief from the current outlook.

Applying Interconnected Game Theory To Analyze Transboundary Waters: A Case Study Of The Kura-Araks Basin, Marianna Khachaturyan, Karina A. Schoengold

A number of environmental problems are international in nature, including many water management issues. Rivers, for example, do not recognize political boundaries. Therefore, pollution generated in one country can affect neighboring countries, while water extraction in an upstream country can affect water flow and water availability in a downstream country. The situation creates an interdependency among countries, which might lead to disputes over the management of transboundary water. Therefore, coordination among the countries is necessary for effective management of these transboundary resources.
The focus of a recently published study (Khachaturyan and Schoengold, 2018) is the transboundary Kura-Araks Basin (see Figure …

A hopeful vision of the future is a world in which both people and nature thrive, but there is little evidence to support the feasibility of such a vision. We used a global, spatially explicit, systems modeling approach to explore the possibility of meeting the demands of increased populations and economic growth in 2050 while simultaneously advancing multiple conservation goals. Our results demonstrate that if, instead of “business as usual” practices, the world changes how and where food and energy are produced, this could help to meet projected increases in food (54%) and energy (56%) demand while achieving habitat protection …

The landscape of water in Utah is changing due to population growth, conversion of agricultural land to urban development, and increasing awareness of water scarcity. At the same time, Utah is experiencing a growing number of urban and small farms, but knowledge of water use in this sector is limited. Better understanding of what occurs at the field level on urban and small farms can aid state water use estimates and conservation efforts, and assist farmers in moving towards wiser water management. For the 2015 growing season, we performed irrigation evaluations for 24 urban and small farms in Cache Valley, …

Technological innovation and the conduct of innovating firms are key weapons in the fight against hunger and the pursuit of food security around the world. Agricultural biotechnology seems uniquely equipped, if not destined, to spearhead the effort to combat malnutrition and hunger around the world by conferring significant agronomic benefits to producers and by having the ability to enhance both the resistance of plants to environmental stresses and the quality and nutritional value of food. Research that was recently published by the Center of Agricultural and Food Industrial Organization- Policy Research Group at the University of Nebraska Lincoln analyzes the …
