In 2020, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) introduced the Farmers to Families Food Box (FFFB) program. Its objectives were threefold: (1) deliver food to those in need, (2) support small and mid-sized producers, and (3) bolster food distribution companies through the pandemic. While the program ended in 2021, the USDA has continued to fund other programs, such as the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) and the Local Food For Schools Cooperative Agreement Program (LFS). In a conversation with one of the TAPS participants about Multi-Peril Crop Insurance (MPCI) he suggested that you would never recommend RPHPE, due to the risk associated with a higher fall harvest price compared to the spring or predicted price. Since the year 2000, this has occurred about one-third of the time. This price reversal may alter indemnity size considerably, depending on which insurance is selected and if one qualifies for an indemnity. The use concomitant of these tools boosts the information provided by the Location Quotient analysis, offering a more holistic perspective. Recognizing that each analytical tool provides only a partial view, it is essential not to rely solely on one method when making investment decisions. Comprehensive decision-making necessitates leveraging multiple tools to gain a more nuanced and accurate understanding of local economies.

This covers seed rate management for corn production. The cost of corn seed—often higher than that of fertilizer—makes seed rate management a key determinator of a farm’s corn production profitability.

In 2022, the Data Intensive Farm Management project, supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-NIFA and USDA-NRCS) and spearheaded by the University of Illinois, implemented over ten seed rate on-farm experiments in the United States. The findings from six of these experiments (three from Illinois and three from South Dakota) have been prepared for analysis and are discussed here.

Syntropic farming, a type of regenerative agriculture, models its farming system after a forest. This type of farming prioritizes soil health while also providing a varied yield of crops. Because it is a fairly new system globally, little research has been done on the economic impacts of syntropic farming, and therefore the feasibility of scaling up regenerative systems like this. This study aims to analyze the economic feasibility of this system through a literature review and a cost-benefit analysis framework. Preferences And Willingness To Pay For A Novel Carbon Label: A Choice Experiment In The United States, Wen Lin, Rudolfo M. Nayga Jr, Wei Yang

This study investigates how US consumers respond to and value a new technology-based carbon label on food products. Results indicate that individual valuation of the carbon-labeled bread is $4/20 oz, marginally lower than the valuation of the conventional and organic bread products. Moreover, individuals belonging to certain market segments, such as non-White, liberal, and well-educated consumers, and those having a high level of knowledge about the causes of climate change, exhibit a higher valuation for the novel carbon label.

One source of hope for the long run is the potential demand for producing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). SAF is a key component in the United States Aviation Climate Action Plan, a path to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the aviation industry by 2050. Notable examples include the Gulf War Oil Spill (1991) and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (2010). Sin tax is essential to reduce the harm caused by products like cannabis. However, excessive taxation may facilitate illicit markets. We examine sin tax policies' impact on legal and illicit cannabis markets in the selected US states. Using a Constant Elasticity of Substitution utility framework, we assess scenarios like sin tax increase and anti-illicit cannabis policies. Our findings indicate high sin taxes may drive consumers to illicit markets, but anti-illicit market policies could control its extent. However, there is a trade-off between market size, tax revenue, consumers' utility, and illicit market control. Thus, optimizing sin tax policies is challenging, necessitating …

Reducing micronutrient malnutrition (“hidden hunger”) in low-income countries is a global challenge, particularly among women, children, and high-poverty households. Countries like Tanzania have developed diverse strategies to combat malnutrition, including the biofortification of staple foods. However, broad awareness and knowledge of micronutrient deficiencies and beneficial foods are needed for these strategies to be effective.
