Accurately identifying and systematically mapping winter-time cover crops and their phenological characteristics offer significant benefits to agricultural producers and policymakers, as cover crops are one of several potential solutions to climate change mitigation. We present a methodological framework for identifying and mapping the presence of winter-time cover crops at the field level and aggregated to county scales from 2013 to 2019 by using the Google Earth Engine (GEE), a random forest classifier with time series data from Landsat 8, and yearly cover crop training data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). In This study we used FTIR spectroscopy to Evaluate Crocus sativus L. quality at MEDICO Lab 2023. FTIR Spectroscopy is a fast and reliable analytical method for quality saffron evaluation. The results of FTIR spectra indicated functional groups related to O-H, C=C, C=O, C-O, C(O)–O, C-H, C-H (cis-) and C-H (trans-). In 2023, the State of Nebraska became the 36th state to implement a Pass-Through Entity Tax (PTET) Deduction law. This law is in response to a change made by the federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2018 which limited the state and local tax deduction eligible for itemized deductions to $10,000. This new state law allows partnerships and s-corporations to pay the state income tax on behalf of their owners which qualifies it for a federal tax law deduction. The individuals will then receive a credit on their individual return for the tax paid on their behalf.

This dissertation is a compilation of 5 chapters culminating in a bioeconomic model of the interactions between an integrated crop-livestock system and native rangeland grazing system. The model is developed using data from the eastern Sandhills of Nebraska, a location where cropping systems of Eastern Nebraska border one of the last intact grasslands remaining in North America.

This dissertation is composed of two essays on agricultural trade and food security. The first chapter is entitled “Decomposing the GMO regulation impact on bilateral trade.” The essay analyses the complex impact of GMO regulations among countries on bilateral trade with a focus on GMO approvals. Three effects impact bilateral trade flows between trade partners: productivity enhancements in the source country, sorting cost from bilateral dissimilarity in regulations, and stringency impact on import demand. Although South Africa accounts for half of the alternative meat market for the African continent, there remains a lack of information about consumer demand for plant-based and lab-cultured meat and its market potential domestically. This study reports the results of a nationwide survey of 649 South African consumers who completed a choice experiment in which they selected among conventional beef and three alternative burger patties at varying prices. Results indicate that holding prices constant and conditional on choosing a food product, 21% of the market share was estimated for plant-based meat alternatives and 38% for lab-cultured meat.

Diesel engine performance and costs represent crucial factors for agricultural producers while pollutants from the exhaust are largely a social concern but also important to producers. Beginning in 1970, Congress authorized the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate emissions with amendments in subsequent years (U.S. EPA, 2023). In 1996 the EPA issued strict Exhaust Emission Standards for Nonroad Compression-Ignition Engines, causing a major paradigm shift in acceptable emission levels. We utilize a coupled economy–agroecology–hydrology modeling framework to capture the cascading impacts of climate change mitigation policy on agriculture and the resulting water quality cobenefits. We analyze a policy that assigns a range of United States government’s social cost of carbon estimates ($51, $76, and $152/ton of CO2-equivalents) to fossil fuel–based CO2 emissions. This policy raises energy costs and, importantly for agriculture, boosts the price of nitrogen fertilizer production. At the highest carbon price, US carbon emissions are reduced by about 50%, and nitrogen fertilizer prices rise by about 90%, leading to an approximate 15% reduction in fertilizer applications for …

Integrated crop-livestock systems are promoted as an alternative for sustainable intensification of food production. They have the potential to offer enhanced input efficiency and maintain a diversified livelihood which plays an important role in building resilience of agricultural systems.
