A Longitudinal Study Of Consumer Perceptions Of Travel Websites: The Case Of Hong Kong, Shanshan Qui, Rosanna Leung, Rob Law, Dimitrois Buhalis
A Longitudinal Study Of Consumer Perceptions Of Travel Websites: The Case Of Hong Kong, Shanshan Qui, Rosanna Leung, Rob Law, Dimitrois Buhalis
Hospitality Review
Knowing how consumers perceive travel websites can help practitioners better understand consumers’ online requirements. This paper reports the findings of a longitudinal study that investigated the changes and trends in the profile and behavior of online travel-website users in Hong Kong. The profiles of e-buyers and e-browsers in 2009, when compared with those established by prior studies conducted in 2000 and 2007, point in a new direction for practitioners and researchers investigating online travelwebsite user behavior. The results indicated that more middle-aged consumers have become online travel-website users, and that website security and price are perceived to be the most …

A Case Study Of Health Tourism In The Jeju Province, South Korea, Young Hoon Kim, Changsan Boo, Ilhan Demirer, Mincheol Kim
Hospitality Review
The United States Census Bureau (2006) reported that in 2005 more than 46 million Americans lacked health insurance, and that by 2019 national spending for health care would exceed $4.5 trillion (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, 2010). Because those numbers are expected to increase, health tourists are seeking better opportunities for low-cost, high-quality treatment in other countries, plus the added benefit of experiencing foreign cultures. Health tourism is a rapidly growing market in both advanced and developing countries. The purpose of this study was to develop an applicable model of health tourism, the Jeju-Style Health Tourism Model, for Jeju …

Feasibility Assessment For Tourism Development In Persian Gulf (A Case Study Of Hendourabi Island), Mohammad Hossein Imani Khoshkhoo
Feasibility Assessment For Tourism Development In Persian Gulf (A Case Study Of Hendourabi Island), Mohammad Hossein Imani Khoshkhoo
university of science & culture
Today, tourism industry is one of the fields that give diversity to the countries’ economy. Whereas, according to investigations of the Global Tourism Organization, tourism is a key to development in many developing and less developed countries. On the other hand, a brief review of the economical planning of our (Iran’s) neighbors and their general focus on tourism as one of the most important sectors of economy, further confirms the need to pay more strict attention to this competitive market. Therefore, it seems necessary to expand the tourism market of these islands and remove their deprivations via canonizing facilities and …
Supply-Side Evolution Of Caravanning In Australia: An Historical Analysis Of Caravan Manufacturing And Caravan Parks, Rod Caldicott
Supply-Side Evolution Of Caravanning In Australia: An Historical Analysis Of Caravan Manufacturing And Caravan Parks, Rod Caldicott
Rod Caldicott
This exploratory study reviewed internal and external supply-side elements of caravanning in Australia, an area largely overlooked to date in the demand-side focused literature. More specifically, it investigated how caravan parks have developed over the passage of time and what role the caravan manufacturing sector (external element) and the park-based site-mix options (internal element) have had in shaping that development.
In 2011, the caravanning industry is only a mere shadow of its former glory days of the mid seventies, as recognised within its own national peak body, the Caravan, Recreational Vehicle and Accommodation Industry of Australia (CRVA), despite the current …

A Narrative Inquiry Into The Learning Experiences Of Deaf Individuals In Tennis, Robbie Jane. Carmichael
A Narrative Inquiry Into The Learning Experiences Of Deaf Individuals In Tennis, Robbie Jane. Carmichael
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Deaf individuals do not have equal access to participating in sports as their hearing counterparts in the United States. Tennis is one sport to which this lack of access applies. The purpose of this qualitative, narrative research study was to add to the research literature by illuminating the learning experiences of Deaf individuals in tennis in the United States. This study was built on a tripartite conceptual framework consisting of motivation, interaction, and the flow experience. The study explored how tennis influenced other aspects in the lives of Deaf individuals. These other aspects included exposure to the game, learning opportunities, …
Everyday Life In The Tourist Zone, Donell J. Holloway, David Holloway
Everyday Life In The Tourist Zone, Donell J. Holloway, David Holloway
Research outputs 2011
This article makes a case for the everyday while on tour and argues that the ability to continue with everyday routines and social relationships, while at the same time moving through and staying in liminal or atypical zones of tourist locales, is a key part of some kinds of tourist experience. Based on ethnographic field research with grey nomads (retirees who take extended tours of Australia in caravans and motorhomes) everyday life while on tour is examined, specifically the overlap and intersection between the out-of-the-ordinary “tourist zone” and the ordinariness of the “everyday zone.”
Anthoethnography: Emerging Research Into The Culture Of Flora, Aesthetic Experience Of Plants, And The Wildflower Tourism Of The Future, John C. Ryan
Research outputs 2011
How does anthoethnography contribute to the development of understandings of aesthetic experiences of wild plants and wildflower tourism? As exemplified by the quintessentially aesthetic industry of wildflower tourism, the culture of flora represents diverse engagements between people and plants. Such complex engagements offer further avenues for research. The critical methodology of anthoethnography has been one such approach to circumscribing the values, practices and rhetoric of wildflower tourism. Interviews have revealed perceptual phenomena such as the orchid and everlasting effects as two counterpoised examples of the differences between visual aesthetic values occurring in the region. For appreciators such as Tinker, botanical …
Segmenting Chinese Outbound Tourists By Perceived Constraints, Mimi Li, Hanqin Zhang, Iris Mao, Clare Deng
Segmenting Chinese Outbound Tourists By Perceived Constraints, Mimi Li, Hanqin Zhang, Iris Mao, Clare Deng
Research outputs 2011
This study examines travel constraints experienced by Chinese outbound tourists. Four constraint factors are identified from visitor data collected in 2006: structural constraint, cultural constraint, information constraint, and knowledge constraint. Information constraint is identified as a factor unique to outbound tourists from China. Among the four constraint factors, structural constraint is the most dominant. Four clusters of visitors are therefore identified: culturally constrained, structurally constrained, absence of sufficient information, and knowledge constrained. The four clusters are distinct in terms of their destination loyalty. The characteristics of each segment are given, and the practical implications of the findings are discussed.

Consulting Ethics, William Feighery
Consulting Ethics, William Feighery
William Feighery
An important, if much neglected, arena within the field of tourism studies is the role of tourism scholars as consultants in the development process. For individuals within this field of ‘expert knowledge’ participation in consultancy projects often places them at the heart of complex and competing interests at local, national and international level. Such complexity necessitates ethically informed decisions. In this paper I first explore the evolution of tourism related research and consultancy, before considering the rise of ethics in arenas of professional practice. Further, I consider the Foucauldian construct of ‘technologies of the self’ as potentially offering an ethical …

Dark Tourism: Towards A New Post-Disciplinary Research Agenda, Philip Stone Dr
Dark Tourism: Towards A New Post-Disciplinary Research Agenda, Philip Stone Dr
Dr Philip Stone
Abstract: Over the past decade or so, dark tourism research –that is, the social scientific study of tourism and tourists associated with sites of death, disaster or the seemingly macabre – has witnessed a burgeoning of the literature base. Much of this research has a profundity that can and, undoubtedly, will contribute to broader social theories and to our understanding of culturaldynamics. Arguably, however, some dark tourism research has been characterised by a banality that either illustrates deficient conceptual underpinning or provides for limited disciplinary synthesis. Thus, in order to assuage any structural deficiencies in dark tourism as a coherent …
