Experiences Of Japanese War Brides And Assimilation Into Appalachia: Understanding The Intersection Of Ethnicity And Gender, Kyoko Kondo
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This qualitative study analyzes the acculturation and assimilation of Japanese war brides into Appalachia. Although the Japanese female immigrants have lived in Appalachia for many years, their life experiences have been ignored by academia in Appalachian studies. A purpose of this study is to advance the understanding what social mechanisms impact the assimilation of the Japanese war brides and what it means for them to live in this society. By using oral history with open-ended questions, data is gathered from in-depth interviews with four Japanese war brides. The study finds retention of ethnic identity, recovery of cultural heritage, and social …
The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard
The Racialization Of Sexuality: The Queer Case Of Jeffrey Dahmer, Ian Barnard
English Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"In this article I read media and subcultural representations of Jeffrey Dahmer, the white male U.S. serial killer who gained notoriety in the late 1980s for having sex with and then murdering and dismembering men of color in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. My aim is to show the extent to which the degree of Dahmer's homosexualization in a particular representation determines Dahmer' s thinking and actions in the sphere of race, and to suggest how spiraling efforts to separate race from sexuality in the Dahmer case only further intricate the two analytic axes."

Most academics build their careers and establish reputations in the traditional manner, through research and publications. Certainly, this is not the only way to secure a place in the lore of academia. Some are great teachers who gather a large following of students. Still others get involved in professional organizations. While Stan Saxton had a respectable record of publications, was a masterful teacher, and a marvelous critic, his notable contributions to sociology came through his organizational work as a chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Dayton. After his tenure as chair, Stan continued to …

The University Of Nebraska Sociology Centennial: An Archival And Documentary Souvenir, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This documentary souvenir is published in conjunction with the centennial celebration of the Department of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, March 3-4,2000. Copies for distribution during the centennial festivities are provided, in part, courtesy of the George Elliott Howard Institute for Advanced Sociological Research. The archival and documentary items selected for inclusion in this special supplement to Sociological Origins are, of necessity, culled from a much larger pool of potential items, many of which could easily be included in such a compilation with equal justification. All materials reproduced herein posses unique historic value, and it is hoped too that …

Dissertations And Theses Sponsored By The Department Of Sociology In The University Of Nebraska-Lincoln 1905-1999: Alphabetical And Chronological Lists, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The year 2000 marks the centennial of the formal departmental organization of sociology at the University of Nebraska. The compilations presented here recognize and celebrate the achievements of hundreds of graduate students, my fellow alumni, who have completed masters theses and doctoral dissertations under the auspices of the Department of Sociology. These student works are constructive, often innovative additions to the advancement of knowledge, and several have been abridged in journal articles or published as books (cf., Hill 1988b). The doctoral dissertation, in particular, is a major rite de passage in the transition from student to intellectual (Deegan and Hill …
Review Of Le Play, Engineer And Social Scientist, Michael R. Hill
Review Of Le Play, Engineer And Social Scientist, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This monograph, a biographical sketch of the early French sociologist, Pierre Guillaume Frederic Le Play, is not a new book. Despite the crisp and attractive appearance of this handsome volume now offered by Transaction Publishers, it is a reprint of a work originally published in England in 1970 by Longmans (a fact noted only in the fore matter on the copyright page). A book of this vintage deserves a new introduction and a bibliographic update. Further, unsettling my sensibilities as an academically trained geographer, Transaction did not reprint the fold-out, multicolor exemplar of Le Play's cartography, located between pages 8 …

Remembering Societal Trauma : Catastrophic Events Of The Twentieth Century In The Soviet Union And The Shaping Of Cultural Memory In Soviet Children's Political Literature, Sean Ozzie Simpkins

Since the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, there have been several waves of interest in establishing more contemporary relations with Russia, punctuated by failure and frustration. Many who would deal with the Russians have little factual information concerning Russian history, and are guided largely by some combination of good will, self interest, and outmoded structural assumptions concerning Russia and the Russian experience (Wedel 1998). This ignorance, in turn, contributes to negative perceptual and behavioral responses on the part of the Russians to these overtures, and any that may follow. The result can lead to a misreading of intent and …

Loren Eiseley And Sociology At The University Of Nebraska, 1926-1936: The Sociological Training Of A Noted Anthropologist, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
LOREN COREY EISELEY [1907-1977] rose from modest beginnings to become one of the nation’s foremost essayists, naturalists, and anthropologists (Carlisle 1983; Christianson 1990; Carrithers 1991; Gerber 1983; Heidtmann 1991; Pitts 1995), and his work was built on a solid interdisciplinary foundation that included intensive undergraduate and graduate study in sociology at the University of Nebraska.1 Eiseley, the writer, is best known today for The Immense Journey (1957), The Firmament of Time (1960), and The Unexpected Universe (1969), his most popular books. As a mature scholar tenured at the University of Pennsylvania, Eiseley served as Provost; Professor and Chair of the …

A Symposium On Lucile Eaves: Lucile Eaves And Nebraska Sociology, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
THE MAJOR published, first-person accounts of early sociology and sociologists at the University of Nebraska include perspectives by George Elliott Howard (1908, 1927), Olivia Pound (1916), Hattie Plum Williams (1919, 1920, 1929), Edward Alsworth Ross (1935), Hutton Webster (1952), and Joyce O. Hertzler (1929). To this instructive and growing list we are pleased to add Lucile Eaves’ sociological autobiography, written in 1928, as well as an example, drawn from Nebraska’s University Journal, of her contemporary observations on social life (Eaves 1914a, b, 1915a, b, c).

Epistemological Realities: Archival Data And Disciplinary Knowledge In The History Of Sociology—Or, When Did George Elliott Howard Study In Paris?, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
This supplement is published in conjunction with the Interim Meeting of the International Sociological Association, Research Committee on the History of Sociology (RCHS) in Torun, Poland, June 1-4, 2000. As many of my colleagues from the United States travel to Europe this summer for the interim meeting in the historic city of Torun, it seems especially appropriate to recall the trans-Atlantic educational adventures of one of our American sociological pioneers.
George Elliott Howard (1849-1928), president of the American Sociological Society in 1917, was one of those American scholars who recognized the value of European training at a time when opportunities …
The Intellectual Context Of Émile Durkheim’S Review Of George Elliott Howard’S American Institutional Perspective On Marriage And Divorce, Michael R. Hill
The Intellectual Context Of Émile Durkheim’S Review Of George Elliott Howard’S American Institutional Perspective On Marriage And Divorce, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT work produced within the Nebraska tradition of sociology is George Elliott Howard’s (1904) massive History of Matrimonial Institutions. The work was widely read, much admired, and warmly critiqued–and it influenced the shape of divorce law reform in the United States of America. Howard’s magnum opus was reviewed by the well-known French sociologist, Émile Durkheim, in L’année sociologique in 1906–an event that should have guaranteed for Howard a more prominent place in the pantheon of sociological founders. This essay documents the special uniqueness of Durkheim’s review and notes the curious neglect of the review by subsequent …
[Introduction To] Crossing The Color Line: Readings In Black And White, Suzanne W. Jones
[Introduction To] Crossing The Color Line: Readings In Black And White, Suzanne W. Jones
Bookshelf
The complex truth about the color line -- its destructive effects, painful legacy, clandestine crossings, possible erasure -- is revealed more often in private than in public and has sometimes been visited more easily by novelists than historians. In this tradition, Crossing the Color Line, a powerful collection of nineteen contemporary stories, speaks the unspoken, explores the hidden, and voices both fear and hope about relationships between blacks and whites. The volume opens with stories by Alice Adams, Toni Cade Bambara, Ellen Douglas, Reynolds Price, Ekwueme Michael Thelwell, and John A. Williams that focus on misunderstandings created by racial stereotypes …

Moderating Effects Of Station Isolation On Antecedents And Consequences Of Fraternization, Tonya M. Luther
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to analyze any differences in reported incidents of fraternization based on relative isolation of location. To fulfill this purpose, a variety of types of fraternization cases were reviewed and analyzed. All data extracted was coded across five factors of fraternization and punishment. Statistical tests determined whether differences in fraternization factors were due to common error or to true differences based on relative isolation of location. Seven different hypotheses relating fraternization and location were tested. Statistical analysis showed that reported fraternization incidents are more likely to be of a sexual nature and involve people of …
The Effects Of School Uniforms On Student Behavior And Perceptions In An Urban Middle School, Jacqueline M. Mccarty
The Effects Of School Uniforms On Student Behavior And Perceptions In An Urban Middle School, Jacqueline M. Mccarty
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
Public opinion polls have consistently highlighted the prevalence of violence in America's schools. Specifically, school personnel have witnessed increased assault and theft related to the wearing of expensive clothing. Concomitantly, administrators have noted decreased attendance rates triggered by clothing issues. Given the gravity of these problems, school officials nationwide have enacted uniform policies in hopes of improving school safety and student behavior. However, current research establishing the effectiveness of these policies is largely anecdotal. The few studies utilizing empirical measures mainly highlight short-term outcomes and often fail to address student perceptions regarding clothing-related problems.
By contrast, this study investigated the …

Already Hit Bottom: General Assistance, Welfare Retrenchment, And Single Male Migration, Thomas Vartanian, Joe Soss, Sanford Schram, Jim Baumohl
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The claim is often made that welfare recipients move to states where benefits are more readily available in more generous amounts. To test that claim, this study uses data on state General Assistance (GA) programs, as well as data on single men from the Public Use Microdata Set of the 1990 U.S. Census. We find only slight evidence that men who lack access to GA seek it elsewhere, and overall we find that the availability of GA has no more than a marginal effect on the location decisions of the men we studied. It seems that poor people, like other …

The Rape Victim's Response An Examination Of The Impact Of Situational Factors On Self-Protective Strategies Utilized By Sexual Assault Victims, Sharon K. Flax
Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations
This study explores the impact of several factors on a victims' responses during sexual assault and/or rape. Specifically, the relationship between self-protective measures taken and the victims age, race, social economic status and the victim-offender relationship were examined. The study utilized the 1995 rape subset of the 1992-1995 redesigned National Crime Victimization Survey. The sample consisted of 350 female rape and/or sexual assault victims. Findings suggest that the victim-offender relationship significantly effects victims' self-protective strategies. Victims of intimate-perpetrated assaults utilize more passive-verbal self-protective tactics. Implications for law enforcement efforts and future research are discussed.

Critical Multiculturalism And The Globalization Of Capital: Some Implications For A Politics Of Resistance, Peter Mclaren, Ramin Farahmandpur
Education Faculty Articles and Research
"Despite the historic defeat of Marxism and constant attempts by so-called progressive educators to exorcize any residual Marxist discourse from the literature on multiculturalism, the contradictions of capital playing themselves out in the theater of contemporary social relations are beckoning Marx's spectre to return and further trouble those theories proclaiming that the "end of ideology" is upon us and that all we need to do in order to rescue humanity is to heed the clarion call of diversity. Too often overlooked in the debates over multiculturalism at present engulfing the academy are the myriad ways in which globalization is shaping …

The purpose of this article is to review the research of school violence, the emotional needs of gifted and talented students, and the implications of school violence for gifted students. The violence which has occurred during the past two years in the United States, not only in the high schools but also the middle and elementary schools, has been widely publicized in current periodicals, television, radio and newspapers.
The questions I have addressed in this article include: What is violence? What is school violence? What does research say about the emotional needs of gifted students? What are the implications of …
Love And Terror At The Virginia Beach Hotel, Mary Jo Deegan
Love And Terror At The Virginia Beach Hotel, Mary Jo Deegan
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The Virginia Beach Hotel was a Victorian summer resort: Its white clapboard big house and herd of little cottages clustered at the end of a bay in Little Paw Paw Lake. It looked like hundreds of other such hotels built to serve tourists escaping the heat of summer in the city; in this case, Chicago. My great grandmother, Ida Cora Hughes, owned the Virginia Beach Hotel; and my mother, Ida May Deegan, spent her childhood and teen years there for many, many summers beginning in 1923 and ending in 1935. To my mother, this spot was a dream, a bubble …
Archival Orientation Interviews As Social Interactions, Michael R. Hill
Archival Orientation Interviews As Social Interactions, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
For social scientists, every orientation interview is inherently an opportunity for systematic observation, analysis, and critique. Consider, by way of contrast, a hypothetical committee of mathematicians who visit archival repositories searching for documentary materials to display during the upcoming centennial celebration of the Mathematics Department at their home university. As mathematicians, orientation interviews are simply means to their pragmatic ends. For social scientists, however, especially for qualitative sociologists such as myself (Hill 1993), the situation is more complex. For some of us, every social interaction is potentially a source of sociological insight (Deegan and Hill 1987). Thus, every orientation interview …
Le Play, Warner, And The Sociology Of Fieldwork, Michael R. Hill
Le Play, Warner, And The Sociology Of Fieldwork, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Several American sociologists have earlier noted, albeit briefly, Frédéric Le Play’s contributions to sociology, for example: Amos Warner (1886), George E. Howard (1904, III: 378), Elsie Clews Parsons (1906: 305, 337), Robert Park and Ernest Burgess (1921: 215), Emory S. Bogardus (1928: 615-16), Charles H. Cooley (Cooley, Angell and Carr 1933: 479), Floyd House (1936), and Lewis Mumford (1948: 678, 683). To this list, Luigi Tomasi (below) adds the names of Merle Frampton, Walter Goldfrank, Robert Nisbet, Catherine Silver, Albion Small, Pitirim Sorokin, and Carle Zimmerman. E.R.A. Seligman and Alvin Johnson included a short biography of Le Play in their …

Bio-Bibliography: Eva J. Ross – Catholic Sociologist, Michael R. Hill
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
The major accomplishments of Eva Jeany Ross’ productive but largely unknown sociological career present opportunities for sociobiographers to examine several contending institutional forces on the professional lives of academic sociologists. Ross’ career unfolded at the intersection of five major institutional arenas: religion, education, the nation-state, family, and patriarchy. Each made a profound impact on the shape of Ross’ sociological work.

Edward Alsworth Ross (Dec. 12, 1866 - July 22, 1951), sociologist and writer, was born in Virden, Illinois, the son of William Carpenter Ross, a farmer, and Rachel Alsworth, a school teacher. Orphaned by his mother’s and father’s deaths (1874 and 1876, respectively), Ross was sheltered in turn by three Iowa farm families. Of the latter, Ross regarded Mary Beach as his foster mother. Alexander Campbell, Ross’ lawyer guardian, shepherded his inheritance, thereby providing ample funds for his schooling.

The committees of correspondence provided a model and a working mechanism for revolutionary agitation and organization on a national scale.
Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney
Dancing With Difference, Michael J. Lenney
Theses : Honours
This is a symbolic interactionist study into behaviours surrounding social interaction. The study has two components, asking how people with able-bodies interact with a young person with a disability, and how does the young person, who is non-verbal, respond to and interpret such interactions? Participants were observed and recorded using a digital camera whilst interacting at a social venue. The able-bodied participants were not aware of the camera at the time of filming, and were approached after the filming to participate in the study. Seven participants were later interviewed and asked to explain what they were aware of as they …
