The sociological effects of marijuana legislation are explored through a cyclical relationship between informal social control and formal law. The document defines three distinct foci: the informal code of morals and mores, a transitional period of social instability, and the eventual implementation of formal code. Morals are described as individual concerns or expressions of the superego, while mores are culturally salient norms that protect societal stability. The transition to formal legislation occurs when personal morals conflict too drastically with societal mores, causing a perceived threat to social order.

The purpose of this project was to determine whether certain personal, socioeconomic, and court-related factors are significantly related to the differential placement of delinquent and dependent children from the detention facility at the Donald E. Long Home. A stratified random sample was composed of 173 placements of children who were held in detention after a preliminary hearing.

The review of literature revealed that little systematic. Information is known regarding the placement process as it is related to differential placement of children from a detention facility.

The purpose of this descriptive study was to reveal the typical life style of a representative sample of fifty male opiate addicts participating in the Oregon Methadone Treatment Program. An important goal of the research was to assess the reliability of information gathered from patients compared to data obtained from an equal number of informants. A highly structured questionnaire was designed to elicit specific responses in order to calculate the degree of concordance between patients and informants to identical items. The findings depicted the modal life style of the subjects as more socially conventional, more responsible, and less antisocial. Although …

A steel gray market, condemned by the government, flourished in the period following the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. The steel-distribution system was analyzed to understand why some distributors participated in the gray market and others did not. Distributors were typed according to their relationship to the distribution system; each type experienced different degrees of control from suppliers, customers, and colleagues; and the norms prescribed by these agents of control also differed. This analysis then suggested some general observations about the nature of occupational norms and occupational organization.

This study is an investigation of prisoner of war sociology, specifically that of Japanese-controlled prison camps in which American soldiers captured in the Philippine Islands in the spring of 1942 were confined for almost three and one-half years. It is an attempt to discover the informal social social structure obtaining in these camps and helps answer answer the question of what happened when the existing social structure of the army was torn down and the men were thrown into a life requiring a rebuilding and realignment of social relationships and values.
