Migration Between Regions & Change In Attitudes Toward Civil Rights, William Rice

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Inter-regional migration within the United States was studied in order to ascertain its effects on changes in civil rights attitudes. From a nationwide sample, white respondents were initially classified as being from the South or the non-South. Within these two groups, respondents were further classified as being original inhabitants or migrants from the other region. Civil rights attitude was measured with an index constructed from attitudinal items employed in the national survey. Relationships among variables were analyzed using Multiple Classification Analysis.

White Southerners were found to be more conservative in regard to civil rights attitudes than white non-Southerners. Migrants from …

Migration histories of a sample of the population in a small urban place--Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico were analyzed and compared to the results from studies of several large urban places in Latin America to see if patterns of migration and factors associated with the migratory process are similar or different. The Mexican In A Northern Urban Area: A Profile Of An Ethnic Community, Norman S. Goldner Jan 1961

The Mexican In A Northern Urban Area: A Profile Of An Ethnic Community, Norman S. Goldner

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

The Mexican colony in St. Paul may be designated as a semi-community in as much as it has never been a stable, complete, and consistent social system (Martindale: 1960). Some of the factors responsible for the failure of the Mexican in the North to duplicate the ethnic community forms exhibited by other minority groups are suggested in the following account.

About three million Mexicans and Mexican-Americans comprise the fourth largest minority group in the United States. When the quota acts of 1921 and 1924 restricted immigration from Europe and Asia, the political and economic forces involved caused a flow of …

Bill followed civilization west and learned the cattle business. He tells of his experiences. He paints a huge canvas of people he knew - Indians, murderers, robbers, horse thieves, and …

Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler Oct 1945

Boom Days In Ellensburg, 1888-1891, Samuel R. Mohler

History Faculty Scholarship

When the Federal Census was taken in 1940, the population of Ellensburg, Washington, numbered 5,944. Several hundred have been added since, but there has been no wartime boom. As the home of Central Washington College of Education, the seat of government of Kittitas County, and the trading center for a prosperous agricultural and stock-raising community, it is (except perhaps during the annual Rodeo) a quiet town of steady habits with a particularly stable economy. It is doubtful if any of its present inhabitants expect it to become a great metropolis, and perhaps few would desire it to be. Yet Ellensburg …
