A survey was conducted of 15 migrant students and their parents. Students and their parents were interviewed with a list of questions. These students attended two secondary and two senior high schools in Yakima, Washington. It was determined that because of continued migration of families, students get behind in their studies and therefore lose interest because of the frustration and low self-esteem these students feel. Families still migrate from Yakima, Washington, to other states in search of seasonal work, farm labor is still a way of life for migrant families from schools in the Yakima School District. Euro-Action ACORD (EAA) is a consortium of 20 European and Canadian aid agencies working in refugee farming settlements in Central and Southern Sudan, and with various rural development projects in other parts of Africa, which responded to a request from the Sudanese Commissioner of Refugees to work in Port Sudan. This was the first time the agency considered working with poor urban people, and staff were determined to understand the economic and social forces which governed life in the slums. The study compares the experiences of Irish immigrants in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1860 with those of Irish immigrants in the port cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. Adjustment and identity are the main points of comparison. While all immigrants experienced difficulty in adjusting to life in a new country, the Catholic Irish who fled their famine-ridden homeland to Protestant-dominated nineteenthcentury America encountered special problems engendered by a fear of the Catholic church. Their adjustment to this hostile environment was made on three levels--economic, social and political. Economic adjustment involved occupational skill levels, employment, income, and property …

This study examines the social and economic framework of the Nubian com­munity in an atterrpt to discover whether, in fact, the Nubian community cur­rently maintains its sense of social solidarity within a societary context of social change and, if so, how and to what degree this is accomplished. One aspect of this study to be presented in this monograph is the adjustments of Nubian families to the urban condition of Cairo.

Migration Between Regions & Change In Attitudes Toward Civil Rights, William Rice

Inter-regional migration within the United States was studied in order to ascertain its effects on changes in civil rights attitudes. From a nationwide sample, white respondents were initially classified as being from the South or the non-South. Within these two groups, respondents were further classified as being original inhabitants or migrants from the other region. Civil rights attitude was measured with an index constructed from attitudinal items employed in the national survey. Relationships among variables were analyzed using Multiple Classification Analysis.

White Southerners were found to be more conservative in regard to civil rights attitudes than white non-Southerners. Migrants from …

Migration histories of a sample of the population in a small urban place--Creel, Chihuahua, Mexico were analyzed and compared to the results from studies of several large urban places in Latin America to see if patterns of migration and factors associated with the migratory process are similar or different. Seven basic hypotheses obtained from prior theoretical works and empirical studies were investigated.

When the Federal Census was taken in 1940, the population of Ellensburg, Washington, numbered 5,944. Several hundred have been added since, but there has been no wartime boom. As the home of Central Washington College of Education, the seat of government of Kittitas County, and the trading center for a prosperous agricultural and stock-raising community, it is (except perhaps during the annual Rodeo) a quiet town of steady habits with a particularly stable economy.
