This research examines how motherhood is viewed by women, particularly mothers, in the southeast of the United States today. The treatment of women compared to men in women's studies has been a popular topic, but there is less research on mothers. This qualitative study is designed to hear personal stories from mothers and potential mothers, both employed and unemployed, describing how they feel mothers are perceived in the southeast of the United States. Eat Like A White Man: Meat-Eating, Masculinity, And Neo-Colonialism, Saphronia Carson

Gender Studies scholarship has argued that one significant way contemporary hegemonic masculinities are constructed and reinforced is through meat consumption. Conversely, plant-based diets such as veganism and vegetarianism are considered feminine. This paper builds on an emerging body of research that traces this gendering of meat and plant-based diets to British colonialism in India. Drawing on ecofeminist and postcolonial theory, it shows how British colonizers feminized Indian dietary cultures, specifically Hindu vegetarian diets, to reinforce their own sense of masculinity. Through critical analyses of marketing and media, it demonstrates how these colonial gendered food images continue to populate contemporary imaginations. …

The body positive movement on social media seeks to challenge narrow conceptualizations of beauty that media outlets traditionally perpetuate and reinforce. Through a 2 × 2 between-subjects online experiment, we examined how the nature and authenticity of body-positive imagery on social media affects female viewers and their evaluations of body-positive content (N = 425, M_age = 35.47, SD_age = 13.52). This Article argues that Mayor Pete Buttigieg seized the national imagination and a substantial number of Democratic delegates through the combination of his gay identity and his alignment with masculinity norms generally assigned to heterosexual men, and by taking aim at more senior and qualified women candidates, namely Senators Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar. Buttigieg’s unprecedented success suggests that some White gay men now enjoy a unique pathway to reclaiming their status as men and asserting White male privilege. Despite the growth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States, only 60% of STEM majors complete their degrees. Although STEM is stereotyped as a cis (same gender as birth), straight male, agentic (self-focused), and not communal (other-oriented) field, the inclusion of communion in STEM boosts STEM motivation. Since LGBTQ students highly value communion and LGB(T)Q students are less likely than non-LGB(T)Q students to stay in STEM, we explored whether LGBTQ individuals’ desire for communal opportunities or feminine gender expression shapes their belonging or expectations for success in STEM which in turn affects their (future) motivation …

Community Engagement Student Work

Sexual and reproductive healthcare is fraught with both historic and current examples of oppression, systemic abuse, and injustice across gender, race, class, and ability. Still, high quality and responsive contraceptive care may provide numerous health benefits, the ability to prevent and plan pregnancies, and opportunities for exercising autonomy and greater educational and economic attainment. Many initiatives focus on quality improvement at the institutional or provider level, but these do not get to every institution or every provider. This project proposes an approach that reduces harm and maximizes benefit on an individual level while larger systemic changes occur. In a workshop …

Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) people face various mental and physical health disparities. Despite this, spaces related to health and wellness are not always inclusive. Similarly, college campuses are often not as inclusive or accommodating as they should be. This study looks at the experiences of TGNC students at campus fitness centers. Through both quantitative and qualitative data gathered through an online survey, it aims to better understand the following: the presence of inclusive facilities; the perceived importance of facility variables; use of campus fitness facilities by TGNC students; what improvements they would like to see; and how any of …

職場共融是香港企業社會責任(Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR)的重要一環。職場共融指出僱主需要尊重僱員之間的多樣性，肯定僱員對工作環境的不同貢獻，並提高員工的專業水準。多元的工作場所亦需要接納來自不同背景、膚色、種族、健康狀況、性傾向和性別認同的員工。綜觀香港商業各界，向來少有女性的高層代表。女同志和雙性戀女性更因為其性別和性傾向，在職場晉升中面臨「雙重隱形天花板」(double glass ceiling) 的阻礙。

透過嶺南大學創新及效益基金的資助，並與香港跨銀行同志論壇(The Hong Kong LGBT Interbank Forum)和Lesbians in Finance合作，鄧芝珊博士向正在香港金融和銀行業工作的女同志和雙性戀女性，進行了一項網絡問卷調查與兩次焦點小組訪談。研究旨在探討香港金融服務業當中，女同志和雙性戀女性所遇到的具體挑戰和障礙。

我們發現，只有37%的問卷調查受訪者曾經在職場「出櫃」，亦有23%向部分關係密切的同事「出櫃」。換言之，他們對於在職場「出櫃」一事仍然有重大顧慮。企業內的LGBT+員工亦面對「隱形天花板」的晉升問題，18%的調查受訪者同意、47%有點同意存在著這種限制。問及女同志和雙性戀女性是否比男同志更難在職場上「出櫃」時，32%受訪者同意、46%表示有點同意。27%的受訪者同意、39%表示有點同意「女同志和雙性戀女性難以獲得企業的晉升」。其他結果則顯示，女同志和雙性戀女性在企業環境中難被看見、缺乏指導機會、承受更大壓力和焦慮，且擔憂女同志和雙性戀女性的身份會令她們遭受質疑。相較於順性別的女性僱員，表現陽剛的員工亦明顯要面臨更嚴格的審查。故此，即使有關多元共融的討論，一直是改善香港企業工作環境的議程之一，但在提升女同志和雙性戀女性議題的意識方面，仍然存在不足之處。

Workplace inclusion is a core component of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Hong Kong. Workplace inclusion points to the need for employers to recognize diversity among employees, to acknowledge their contributions to the work environment and to raise professional standards for the work force. Diversity within a workplace indicates inclusion of persons with different backgrounds as in racial, ethnic, sex, health status, sexual orientation and gender identity. Perceptions Of Bystander Intervention: Surveying Students’ Relationship To Sexual Misconduct, Emma G. Padrick

Bystander intervention education programs have become increasingly popular as a tool for the primary prevention of sexual violence at institutions of higher education (IHEs). Emerging research surrounding bystander intervention on college campuses reveals promising results, yet there is limited extant research exploring how students perceive bystander intervention as a tool to protect themselves and their peers. Students over the age of 18 at a small, private, liberal arts IHE in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States with approximately 2,600 students were surveyed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to bystander intervention. Gender And Performance In Public Organizations: A Research Synthesis And Research Agenda, Sanghee Park

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study examines the variations among empirical findings of gender effects on the performance of public organizations; and identifies avenues for future efforts in the scholarship of gender and public administration. The meta-analysis using 72 studies published between 1999 and 2017 demonstrates that studies reporting statistical significance of female leadership and gender representation in the workforce tend to find a positive impact on performance. Study characteristics such as policy types/areas, time scopes, geographical context consistently affect the findings of gender effects, while the variance in measurement strategies and publication status do not make a difference in empirical evidence.

This paper examines the cisnormative environment created by men's and women's labeled sports, and how claims often used to exclude transgender, non binary, and intersex athletes are disproved by psychology and physiology. It also discusses the NCAA's current policies on the inclusion of transgender, non binary, and intersex athletes.
