The purpose of this study was to examine the relative contribution of socioeconomic status and student perceptions of school effectiveness to academic achievement in engineering students. The variables representing the general factor of socioeconomic status were 1) father’s occupation, 2) father’s schooling, 3) mother’s schooling, 4) family income, and 5) family’s community population. The variables representing student perceptions of school effectiveness were: 1) help seeking factor, 2) professional preparation factor, 3) experience factor, 4) outside classroom activity factor, 5) personal encouragement factor, and 6) delivery factor.

The problem of this study was to increase the general publics' awareness of the difficulties Black Americans faced in pursuit of higher education.

The procedure was a twofold process. First, the writer reviewed some of the pre-college variables that affected the Black student. Second, the needs and concerns of the Black student at a predominantly White University were studied by the use of a questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to three groups on the Eastern Illinois University Campus. The Desegregated School And Status Relationships Among Anglo And Hispanic Students, Peter Iadicola, Helen A. Moore

Desgregated elementary school students display verbal and non-verbal indicators of status relationships in a structured, videotaped interaction game.  Both Hispanic and Anglo third grade student responses are analyzed across ten schools for a case study of factors that influence racial/ethnic integration outcomes.  Variance in student outcomes are primarily explained by socioeconomic dimensions of the schools.   These findings suggest that school desegregation poses a contradiction for Hispanic students.

Involvement, Social Class And Attrition In Higher Education: The Case Of The Stop Out, Terrence Scott Daugherty

This thesis tests the validity of three theories purporting to explain the attrition of stop outs -- why students interrupt their studies with the intent to return to school. Data were gathered at two schools, Portland State University and Reed College. Two theories, those of social class and involvement, were tested at each school as contending explanations of attrition by path analysis of parsimonious models derived by factor analysis. These theories were found to explain little of the variance of attendance pattern (less than 4.3 percent) at either school. No particular lines of causation could be demonstrated at either school. …

During the past two decades a substantial amount of educational research has focused on the relationship between socioeconomic status and school achievement. Many researchers believe that a strong correlation exists between these two factors while others present evidence to refute this hypothesis. It appears that most of these investigations fall into one of three categories. Arthur Jensen, a well known advocate of genetic determinism, contended that eighty percent of the variance in intelligence could be accounted for by hereditary factors. A series of observations was made on students attending a cultural center during the third of three visits scheduled throughout the school year. A single observer made 444 one minute observations on kindergarten/ first, second, and third grade students participating in two learning areas. The group activity area emphasized group participation where small groups were formed consisting of students from each school and ethnic group represented. The individual activity area offered the students a choice of center activities as well as the freedom to choose with whom they wanted to work. The resegregation of students in desegregated elementary schools generates potential barriers to social integration and academic achievement.  WE are interested in the role of greater status inequality in reducing academic achievement for minority students.  We generate multiple measures of internal schooling processes such as ability grouping, high stakes testing, and unequal burdens of busing across racial ethnic groups at ten desegregated elementary schools in California selected as case studies from a larger sample of 182 schools.  Hispanic student enrollments ranged from 10 percent to 53 percent of each campus and we assess variations in resegregation practices and student and campus …

A Demographic Study Of Emotionally Disturbed Hispanic Students Enrolled In The Public Schools Of Texas, Luis Manuel Mancha

A demographic study was made of the public schools in Texas and it was found that the majority of the emotionally disturbed students are White, non-Hispanic. At the same time, the results of the study indicated that the majority of the public schools in Texas are serving less than two percent of the total student enrollment with programs for the emotionally disturbed. Further examination indicated that overall, the public schools in Texas are failing to serve 12% of the student population with special education services. If blacks are to compete successfully in white academia, they must be able to communicate and interact with white students and professors. Acceptance of middle-class white students with an academic achievement orientation, as friends and equals, should enable or assist blacks in developing positive attitudes toward academic achievement. This in turn should positively affect scholastic performance. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the attitude of elementary teachers toward direct participation and representative participation in educational decision-making. A population of elementary teachers from six elementary schools were given an attitude survey concerning involvement. The results of this study suggested that elementary teachers attached more importance to direct participation than representative decision-making concerning areas of instructional leadership.
