Assessing The Ordinality Of Response Bias With Item Response Models: A Case Study Using The Phq-9, Venessa N. Singhroy
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Improper scale usage in psychological and clinical assessment is an important problem. If respondents do not use the scales in a consistent manner, the reliability of a composite is likely to be attenuated. This is particularly problematic when particular items are singled out for special treatment or when subscales are of interest, not just a total score. This study used both non-parametric and parametric item response theory (IRT) methods to gain further insight into the validity of the PHQ-9, a dual purpose instrument that assesses the severity of depressive symptoms using nine Likert-scale items and allows the investigator to establish …

Teachers’ Perspectives Regarding The Impacts Of The Secondary Education Expansion Policy On Students’ Self-Regulatory Learning Experiences In Tanzania, Godlove Lawrent
The Qualitative Report
Since 2004, the Tanzania secondary education sector has witnessed a significant increase in the number of new schools and enrolment rates. At the same time, academic results have indicated an increase in poor student performance. The assumption has been that the expansion policy brought about devastating consequences for student learning. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to investigate the perceptions of teachers in relation to the impacts of the government’s secondary education expansion policy on students, especially their self-regulatory learning. A qualitative case study approach was employed, and interviews were used as data gathering tools. Thirty respondents were purposively …

The What, Where, How And Why: A Review Of Being Ethnographic: A Guide To The Theory And Practice Of Ethnography, Jetlexis Carlos
The Qualitative Report
In Being Ethnographic: A Guide to the Theory and Practice of Ethnography, Raymond Madden presents ethnography in a way that is easily understood by describing real life experiences from both his own work and others working in the field. This book is a great resource to guide those who wish to conduct ethnographic research or need a learning tool to understand the underlying nature of ethnographic research. Madden links the way ethnographic research is done to how ethnographic research is thought about. It is a great introduction to the “what,” “where,” “how,” and “why” of practicing of ethnography.

Segregation Of Student Financial Aid In Higher Education: The Effects On Low-Income Students When Ebt Is Not Accepted At University Campuses In San Diego, Ca., Tanisha-Jean Martin
M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers
The student bodies of universities are made up of a diverse financial class of students which utilize various methods to cover financial obligations on campus, even with the use of welfare governmental assistance. Low-income students that are involved in government welfare programs are given an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to support them while they are pursuing an education; however, every university in San Diego, CA (and nearly the entire United States), segregate EBT into an unacceptable category and refuse to accept the card at any venues on campus. The EBT card is a plastic card that can be used …

Stories To Be Told: A Qualitative Book Review Of How Dare We! Write- A Multicultural Creative Writing Discourse, Wonbin Jung
The Qualitative Report
How Dare We! Write – A Multicultural Creative Writing Discourse (Lee, 2017) is an anthology of the stories that writers of color and LGBTQAI+ writers have experienced and still are experiencing in the mainstream publishing world, academia, and everyday life. The book is broken into five themes in which each writer describes experiences of publishing work in the White publishing world. They describe their cultures in an imperialistic language, English, and create stories that they as people of color can relate to such as being rejected by mentors and publishers and eventually letting themselves heal from the wounds caused by …
America's Immigrant Dream, Elie Ngandu
America's Immigrant Dream, Elie Ngandu
The Diana McDonald Writer's Challenge
As an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Elie Ngandu contrasts the immigrant perception of the United States as a land of opportunity to the perception, held by many disadvantaged Americans, of its being land of inequity, lacking avenues to move out of poverty. Elie acknowledges sympathy for Americans who come from a line of long-oppressed forebearers. He believes the U.S. is becoming the land it has long claimed to be, where people, no matter what background, can become successful through education and hard work. (Seth Mendelowitz)

UCARE: Research Products
Improving conservation in conventional agriculture is crucial for the sustainability of agricultural economies. The aim of this project is to identify factors correlated with agricultural producers adopting conservation practices on their land.
Producers tend to choose their tillage and cropping systems based on soil management and yield/productivity concerns. Reasons and concerns for using no-till vary by state. For example, producers in Iowa choosing their tillage system based on yield/productivity concerns are 9.8% less likely to use no-till, while producers in South Dakota with the same concerns are 21.5% more likely to use no-till.

A Review Of Using Think-Aloud Interviews And Cognitive Labs In Educational Research, Melanie Kinskey
The Qualitative Report
In this book, Leighton (2017) describes two methods of qualitative interviewing that provide researchers an opportunity “to present observable indicators (evidence) of phenomena that are technically unobservable” (p. 14). Leighton (2017) describes the procedures for conducting and analyzing think-aloud interviews, which are used to understand problem solving processes; and cognitive laboratories, which provide insight into comprehension and understanding. Through the use of examples of verbal reports, Leighton (2017) provides readers with step-by-step processes which prepare researchers to be well equipped for collecting and analyzing interview data.

While a literature review is a necessary milestone to be completed by all researchers in a timely and efficient manner, it is often one of the most difficult aspects of the research journey. Moreover, traditional approaches often leave novice researchers, to struggle with the conceptualisation of their literature review, now complicated by the overwhelming quantity of research available online. This paper presents a rationale the use of Qualitative Data Analysis Software (QDAS) programs for literature reviews. QDAS tools allow the researcher to explore large amounts of textual documents to see patterns. These programs are often overlooked by novice researchers due …
