Although Japanese seniors are very healthy, research shows that they are not very happy. Compared to seniors in other developed countries, Japanese elders have lower ratings of subjective well-being and are increasingly alone. This paper argues that changes to Japanese family life help explain why Japanese elders are struggling with low subjective well-being. Specifically, declining marriage rates and declining rates of elders living with their children (co-residency) have made it harder for elders to get the support they need. There has been increasing interest in pre-colonial societies and practice in younger generations and it has become more prevalent in younger Filipino Americans, as evidence is shown through social media. Younger Filipino Americans have taken a step toward retracing their heritage and rejecting colonial customs embedded within their culture by bringing back pre-colonial practices. This study analyzes how younger generations are using the social media app TikTok as an educational tool, and how it is shifting social and cultural trends in Filipino American youths. How do the underlying mechanisms of social norms and bargaining power relate to the acceptance of intimate partner violence within households? How do short run and long run determinants of gender norms affect attitudes toward IPV? This study begins to decompose the dynamics of the acceptance of IPV within couples using data from the Demographic Health Survey, as well as examine the relationship in the context of patriarchal societies using data from the Ethnographic Atlas.
