The Evolution Of The Non-Aligned Movement: Conceptual Orientations And Basic Issues, Haroub Othman Jan 1983

The Evolution Of The Non-Aligned Movement: Conceptual Orientations And Basic Issues, Haroub Othman

Faculty Book Chapters

With the thaw of the cold war and the emergence of detente between the superpowers, it was widely argued that the policy of non-alignment had almost lost its relevance. Behind this belief was the assumption that non-alignment was the outcome of the cold war. However, non alignment did not go into oblivion as predicted by the cold war theory. On the contrary, the Movement was able to adapt itself to the new international conditions of the 1970's and to reemerge bigorously as a major political force in the 1980's. The papers published in this volume tackle these questions from various …

Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger Jan 1983

Computers, Cables, And Citizenship: On The Desirability Of Instant Direct Democracy, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

Mulford Sibley is not the sort of scholar who makes a career of elaborating variations on a theme. There are recurring themes in his work, however, and I want to sound two of them, participatory democracy and technology, in this essay. These themes may be joined in a number of ways, but here I shall take up only one - the possibility that advances in communications technology may actually promote democracy by extending and enhancing opportunities for political participation.

Some Problems With Marx's Theory Of Capitalist Penetration Into Agriculture: The Case Of Ireland, Ellen Hazelkorn Jan 1981

Some Problems With Marx's Theory Of Capitalist Penetration Into Agriculture: The Case Of Ireland, Ellen Hazelkorn

Articles

Marx and Engels's writings on Ireland are usually associated with their positive support for Irish nationalism. This article seeks to examine the extent and depth of their knowledge of Ireland, politically and economically, by focusing attention on Marx's analysis of post-famine agricultural readjustment. Comparing the latter's comments in Capitaland elsewhere with actual developments, it is suggested that Marx and Engels's understanding was less than accurate. The source of their misinterpretation lies principally with their inadequate analysis of tenants, agrarian capitalism, and land fever

The Appropriateness Of The Concept Of The Individual, Frank Clancy Jan 1980

The Appropriateness Of The Concept Of The Individual, Frank Clancy

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The fundamental concepts of any discipline ought to be examined periodically, not only to understand what constitutes those principles or concepts but also to ensure that our basic assumptions are logically and empirically acceptable. This thesis calls for the reexamination of the concept of the “individual” and of its role as the basic or fundamental unit of human society. Two suggestions are made an indications that possible alternative views are logically consistent with the data presently at our disposal. The first suggestion is that the concept of the individual in Western culture was formed largely as a by-product of a …

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers Jan 1980

James D. Barber: "The Presidential Character": An Attempt Of Applicability, Renate Irene Ahlers

Masters Theses

In 1972 James Barger published his book The Presidential Character: Predicting Performance in the White House. In this book Barber tries to typify the American Presidents, beginning with William H. Taft, according to four psycho-political categories: active-positive, active-negative, passive-positive, and passive-negative. The most important part of Barber's thesis is that the future performance of any presidential candidate can be predicted by looking at the factors that place him into a certain category. These factors are his character, his world view and style, the power situation, and the climate of expectations. Character, world view, and style are clearly formed well …

Judicial Review And The National Political Process: A Functional Reconsideration Of The Role Of The Supreme Court, Henry Paul Monaghan Jan 1980

Judicial Review And The National Political Process: A Functional Reconsideration Of The Role Of The Supreme Court, Henry Paul Monaghan

Faculty Scholarship

Imagine a cold morning early in February. Slowly sipping coffee in an effort to awaken fully, you are reading through the Supreme Court advance sheets. You come across the following brief opinion:

PER CURIAM. Fisher v. Rye Co., No. 81-1, and First Savings Bank v. Smith, No. 81-2. These petitions for certiorari have been consolidated for disposition in a single opin-ion. No. 81-1 challenges an Executive Order that, in an effort to combat gender-based discrimination, requires government contractors to adopt affirmative action programs. No argument is made that the Executive Order is authorized by statute. Concluding that the …

Conflict In Context: The Sanctioning Of Draft Resisters, 1963-76, Ilene Nagel Bernstein, John Hagan Jan 1979

Conflict In Context: The Sanctioning Of Draft Resisters, 1963-76, Ilene Nagel Bernstein, John Hagan

Articles by Maurer Faculty

In this paper we examine the sanctioning of one type of political deviance, draft resistance, in two different social and political contexts: an era of coercive control and a period of cooptive control. A focus on the sanctioning of draft resisters allows a unique opportunity to examine the societal response to what the New Criminologists (Taylor et al., 1973:267) describe as the "purposive creator and innovator of action" whose crimes are the product of ". . . individual or collective action taken to Resolve... inequalities of power and interest." Our data cover a fourteen year period and consist of information …

Contributing Factors To The Existence Of Right-To-Work Laws In Two Southern States, Timothy A. Bledsoe May 1978

Contributing Factors To The Existence Of Right-To-Work Laws In Two Southern States, Timothy A. Bledsoe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Providing explanations of why governments or political systems adopt the public policies they do is and has been a goal of political science for some time. The purpose of this paper is to investigate one specific policy out-come -- so called "right-to- work" laws -- in the context of the political environment provided by two Southern states: Arkansas and Louisiana.1 Specifically, an effort will be made to determine what environmental factors have tended to encourage the adoption of right-to-work laws and how the proponents and opponents of such laws have attempted to influence their passage or repeal.

The Origin Of Ideology: Marx’S Method Of Human Liberation And Husserl’S Investigation Of Judgments, Bryce Weber Jan 1978

The Origin Of Ideology: Marx’S Method Of Human Liberation And Husserl’S Investigation Of Judgments, Bryce Weber

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis begins by asking how alienation can be distinguished by objectification. By examining the first chapter of Capital I and the Grundrisse it is discovered that Marx’s theory of labour hinges on an understanding of the psychic process of the subject. In order to universalize Marx’s method the thesis shifts to Husserl’s examination of the subjective process of judging. The latter is understood in this thesis as structurally equivalent to Marx’s understanding of labour. It is discovered that the meaning of any act of judging/labour is irreal. Alienation is thus discovered to be the naive belief in the factual …

Judicial Incentives: Some Evidence From Urban Trial Courts, Greg A. Caldeira Apr 1977

Judicial Incentives: Some Evidence From Urban Trial Courts, Greg A. Caldeira

IUSTITIA

In the following pages, I shall outline the basics of a method for studying the motivations of trial judges - or any public officials, for that matter - that I find particularly interesting and fruitful - "incentive theory". The use of incentive theory is, in my view, a preliminary contribution to an ongoing movement to fill glaring gaps in the literature on judicial motivation and trial judging.

American Feminism And Social Democracy, Cathy Elizabeth Hinshaw May 1976

American Feminism And Social Democracy, Cathy Elizabeth Hinshaw

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The concepts of both social democracy and feminism will be discussed in detail in the course of the thesis. By way of introduction, broad definitions for these concepts will be offered here. Before attempting these definitions, however, the "central validity" of which Lippmann speaks and around which the definitions revolve should be established. The core of both social democracy and feminism, as they are to be used here, is a particular understanding of the notion of equality.
