This paper evaluates whether students’ perceptions of Appalachian English improve through a method of instruction that uses dialect literature in the classroom. Most existing methods of instruction tend to portray dialects as wrong, incorrect, or in some way less rule-governed than Standardized English, despite the numerous studies that have demonstrated otherwise (e.g., Labov 1969, Wolfram 1986). The data from this study derives from two groups of students enrolled in introductory composition and communication at the University of Kentucky. It is argued that while the application of SCL is related to classroom learning activities, it is also strongly connected to efforts to motivate learners, involve them in creating learning goals, and encourage them to find relationships between their learning and life experiences. Furthermore, the article explains that the application of SCL is partly related to cultural issues, viewed from both teacher and learner perspectives.

This study centered on the expectations of a non-native English-speaking undergraduate student and her teacher in a general education course at Portland State University during winter term 2012. This was a qualitative case study, where I collected data throughout the duration of the course by means of interviews, classroom observations, and written assignment sheet data. I triangulated verbal data from interview transcripts from the two participants, along with data from the observation notes and the assignment sheets in order to gain a better understanding of the expectations each participant had about writing assignments.

The objective of this study is to develop a concept mapping strategy to improve the reading ability of second-semester students at the College of Islamic Studies Ma’arif (STAI) Metro–Lampung. A classroom action research design was conducted in two cycles, each comprising planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. Observation sheets, field notes, interviews, and tests were used during each cycle. This article reports efforts to improve students’ reading ability in understanding narrative texts through the implementation of an autonomous learning strategy at SMPN 1 Singosari. The autonomous learning strategy was adopted in response to the current need for a learning process that supports the development of Indonesian students’ character. The study involved eighth-grade students of SMPN 1 Singosari during the 2010/2011 academic year. The findings indicate that the implementation of the autonomous learning strategy in reading activities effectively enhanced students’ comprehension of narrative texts. This study aims to obtain an understanding of Indonesian students’ attitudes toward the Japanese language. The data were collected from 160 students learning Japanese. The Foreign Language Attitude Questionnaire (FLAQ), originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980), was used in this study. In addition, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) based on the results of FLAQ factor analysis were incorporated into the current research. Poetry can help students become more sensitive to language. However, in an EFL situation, students may object to learning poetry. Thus, English teachers should know how to use poetry in their teaching. Teachers should also ensure that EFL learners do not feel worried about understanding poetry, as not all poems are difficult. Moreover, what matters most is learning English through poems rather than learning about the poems themselves. In short, it is suggested that EFL teachers encourage learners to explore poems and write their own. Poetry provides abundant language exposure that improves students’ language sensitivity and creativity in using English.

In academic environments, reading is assigned not simply to transmit information; students are required to take the information, and based on the task set by the instructor, assess, analyze, and critique it on the basis of personal experiences, prior knowledge, and other readings (Grabe, 2009). This article shows that ethnography, as an approach, is a very useful tool to be applied in research attempting a good understanding of EFL/ESL classrooms. With reference to work done by anthropologists and classroom researchers, the present article argues that education, including EFL/ESL classrooms, can be well understood by using ethnographic approaches. This is done by elaborating the relevance of ethnography and the classroom context in the sense that ethnographic principles are applicable in describing and understanding the culture of a classroom, and EFL/ESL teaching in particular.
