A Competency-Based Proficiency Framework For Ritsumeikan Secondary Schools, Ann Flanagan

This paper describes the research and development of a competency-based Proficiency Framework for Ritsumeikan Secondary Schools in Kyoto, Japan as part of curriculum renewal with the campus relocation. The author developed a six-year competency-based curriculum for the EFL classes. It is based on the Common European Framework of Reference. In addition to creating guiding principles and proficiency frameworks, the author has included suggested vocabulary and content, sample themes and topics, entry and exit profiles, and teacher competencies. This paper examines the implications that the relationship between teacher language awareness and communicative peace may have on educational programs for teachers of English for speakers of other languages (ESOL). The evaluation begins by analyzing proposals set out by the applied peace linguist Francisco Gomes de Matos, who suggests that ESOL teachers should teach communicative peace as an element of communicative competence, and also that education programs should provide training to support this approach. Based on Kellogg’s model of writing, this study investigated the effects of planning on fluency, complexity and accuracy in the narrative writings of average proficiency undergraduates. 30 Malaysian students undertook the task of writing a narrative with the aid of a set of pictures and writing prompt, under three different conditions. No planning (NP) participants were instructed to write without planning time but with limited writing time. Pre-task planning (PTP) participants were given limited planning and writing time. Within-task planning (WTP) participants had unlimited writing time but no planning time. Results indicated that pre-task planning was beneficial in increasing fluency …

This is a study on multi-word unit (MWU) errors made by Malaysian English learners. The major approaches used in the analysis of learners’ writings are: error analysis and corpus-based approach. The findings from this study reveal that learners have problems with these MWUs: modal structures , infinitive structures , ‘adjective + noun’ collocations , and connectors . An analysis of these structures shows that the common erroneous patterns in these structures can generally be categorized as ‘overgeneralization’, ‘misformation’, ‘misselection’, and ‘distortion’. Responding in a manner that does not align with an action or affiliate with a stance implicated in just prior talk is potentially sensitive work. Conversation Analysis (CA) has shown that participants orient to the sensitive nature of sequences of talk used to project responses that do not align, or, are dispreferred (Pomerantz 1984) in some way. This paper examines such responses, especially with the use of no tokens. This article examines the interactive import of prosody from a perspective of participants' orientation to talk in interaction, taking advantage of data from institutional discourse to focus on the prosodic packaging of recurring turn sequences of the same discourse activity. The analysis focuses on the third slot of a ubiquitous three-part classroom discourse sequence, the IRF exchange (Sinclair & Coulthard 1975), a site in which teachers make repetitive feedback moves following student responses.
