Investigating the use of gold open access content within subscription content has been a near impossible task until the adoption of the COUNTER 4 statistics in 2014. By reviewing the COUNTER JR1 GOA 2014 reports, two librarians evaluate the gold open access usage at their respective institutions from the following publishers: Elsevier, NPG, Sage, Springer, and Wiley. This initial investigation will be a benchmark for future studies to see if there is any impact on subscribed content or if usage is limited to non-subscribed content from these providers. The allure of passing an institutional open-access (OA) policy as a strategy to populate an institutional repository is clear. After all, educating faculty to retain their rights to their scholarly publications through passage of such a policy, then requiring them to make those publications available through an IR seems a sure path to success. However, this approach of “if you pass it, they will comply” rings eerily similar to the early and decidedly misplaced optimism of populating institutional repositories through a “build it and they will come” proposition (Salo, 2007). DataQ is an IMLS­-funded project led by the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries, GWLA, and GPN to develop an online knowledge-­base of research data questions and answers curated for and by the library community. Publicly submitted questions to DataQ are reviewed by an Editorial Team of experts from 15 institutions across the United States. The site also includes links to resources, best practices, and practical approaches to working with researchers to address specific research data issues. This update from members of the Editorial Team will discuss outcomes and future directions following the first year of the DataQ project.

Librarians at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) received a Statewide California Electronic Library Consortium (SCELC) Project Initiatives Fund grant to create an online open access repository of user contributed research and information literacy assignments targeted to SCELC institutions. At San Jose State University, a paper-based archive centering on library and information science history is being processed, organized, and uploaded onto ScholarWorks, the campus institutional repository. Prior to its digitization, the presenters grappled with many questions. What platform should be used to house the archive? California’s three public higher education systems (University of California, California State University, the California Community College System) enroll nearly 3 million undergraduate students and employ almost 100 thousand faculty. In 2012, the California State Legislature directed the three systems to create an online library of open educational resources to encourage the use of free or affordable textbooks and other materials throughout California’s public higher education system. The search for alternatives to high priced textbooks endures. The librarians at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, with the help of an IMLS Sparks! Ignition grant, decided to jump into the fray by creating the Open Access Course Reserves. It is a publicly available, curated repository that provides ready-made reading lists of free, copyright compliant (open access when possible), educational materials. Embedding the Affordable Learning Solutions (ALS) into the Academic Senate provides a forum and a platform for promoting ALS to and with faculty. At Cal State East Bay, ALS is now a Subcommittee of the Committee on Instruction and Curriculum (CIC) with representation from key constituencies, including a faculty representative from each College and the Library. Recommendations and suggestions can now be routed through CIC to the full Senate. SMU moved from an in-house research publications solution to a commercial solution with integrated workflows for research management. The Library is the module lead for the Publications Module. The new Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) went live with the Publication Module as the first module in July 2015. In recent years, libraries have used creative ways to invite current and potential users to their spaces and services. Inspired by our library’s role in supporting faculty, staff, and students, Roesch Library at the University of Dayton hosted a free open house-style event targeted to university faculty and staff featuring local craft beer offerings selected by a faculty member well-versed in the brewing arts.
