This was an interactive panel presented at the Critical Pedagogy Symposium. Our presenters’ theme was their atypical work experiences across different cities.
- Jennifer shared her perspective as a privileged economic migrant (White American woman in Shanghai). Colleges and graduate schools have been online–successfully–for over a decade. Our students are not alone. This is the new normal and it is cool.
- Sarah shared her perspective both as a library student doing her fieldwork on a controversial topic during the lockdown in Singapore, as well as a library staff managing on-site student workers who live on campus while she worked from home. …

Exploring Adolescents’ Critical Thinking Aptitudes When Reading About Science In The News, Marianne Bissonnette, Pierre Chastenay, Chantal Francoeur
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This research studies the critical thinking skills of six teenagers in their final years of high school. It looks at the way those students use a set of cognitive skills in order to analyze scientific and pseudoscientific information available in online news articles. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six students chosen according to their results in a questionnaire about interest in science topics. Results show a large gap between participants’ use of critical thinking skills. Most of these skills were mainly used for text comprehension, evoking general knowledge, numeracy, arguments assessment and production, and life skills (open-mindedness and metacognition). The …

Information Literacy Competency Levels Of Social Science Researchers: A Diagnostic Study, Rajesh Singh Dr., Shailendra Kumar Prof.
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The present study is a diagnosis of Information Literacy Competency (ILC) levels of social science researchers. The data was empirically collected from 520 researchers and analyzed using differential and inferential statistical techniques. The Information Literacy (IL) competent researchers were maximum 79.6% in ‘Information Use Ethics’, followed by 77.7% in ‘Information Need’, 76.2% in ‘Information Use’, 66.9% in ‘Information Evaluation’ and 53.8% in ‘Information Access’. The study has identified IL deficiencies on different parameters and suggests necessary improvements in the current practices for further enhancement of ILC among researchers.

Information literacy (IL) provides essential proficiency for academics and research in the networked digital information landscape. The present study is an empirical assessment of information literacy competency (ILC) levels of researchers in social sciences from varied frames of reference i.e. gender, age groups, periods of research, subjects and universities. The data collected from 520 researchers were processed and analyzed using various techniques of descriptive and inferential statistics to identify IL competent and incompetent researchers on different variables. The descriptive statistics included frequency distribution, percentage distribution, etc. and was aided by computing mean, standard deviation, and range. Inferential statistics consisted of …

Ignatian Information Literacy: Applying The Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm To Library Instruction, Anthony Tardiff
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Instruction librarians in higher education specialize in information literacy, which is the set of skills needed to interact effectively with information. The guiding document for library instruction, the Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy, calls for imparting the foundational wisdom and self-awareness which underlie these skills. Unfortunately, most library instruction is delivered in 50- or 75-minute “one-shots” focusing on the technical skills of searching library resources, which makes deeper information literacy instruction a challenge. One way to meet this challenge is to utilize the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP), which shares with the ACRL Framework …

Unpacking Lateral Reading Through Practice And Reflection: Metacognitive Strategies Of Critical Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis
Unpacking Lateral Reading Through Practice And Reflection: Metacognitive Strategies Of Critical Source Evaluation, Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis
Libraries Scholarship
Increasingly librarians are moving away from checklist approaches like CRAAP and advocating for “lateral reading” as a way to quickly evaluate the credibility of online sources. Essentially “lateral reading” is spending little time on a website and more time reading what other sources say about the website in order to quickly evaluate its credibility. While seemingly simple, lateral reading strategies are not always as straightforward as they first appear. Participants will practice lateral reading and consider ways to encourage students to bring metacognitive and critical thinking skills to using lateral reading for source evaluation.

Songs are the simplest things for each individual to like. With the development of information technology, songs have also changed from analog to digital. This causes a song that is a copyrighted work to be easily obtained. Therefore, in this study, we want to discuss the information-seeking behavior of the society to get the song. In this research, the theory of information-seeking behavior will be placed with the theory of actions or habits put forward by Bourdieu, namely capital, habitus, and "arena". This research aims to understand the action in obtaining the song from the perspective of information-seeking behavior theory …

On The Lookout For Lizards: Online Tools For Informed Democratic Citizenship, Robert Detmering, Terri Holtze, Amber Willenborg
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In her recent essay,“Lizard People in the Library,” Barbara Fister argues that “systems designed to share information virally pose a serious threat to democracy.” As librarians and educators, we have an obligation to help students understand and navigate online platforms that spread misinformation at alarming rates and, in the process, contribute to the erosion of democratic norms and values. Unfortunately, research suggests we might be failing in this regard (Head, Fister, and MacMillan, 2020;Wineburg, Breakstone, Ziv, and Smith, 2020). In this talk, we will describe the development and implementation of the University of Louisville’s Citizen …

From 1984 until the present, the National Library of Indonesia has managed the country’s International Standard Book Number (ISBN) system. In 2017, the ISBN online service launched a single account, or access, for which each publisher could register. However, various problems still arise, among them the usability within the ISBN Online system. By collecting responses from 757 respondents who work in publishing companies, this study analyses the relationship between demographic characteristics and a user experience component: usability in the ISBN Online service. The study found five significant relationships such as (1) gender and ISBN Online service design, (2) gender and …

Library Publishing Curriculum
In the original, modular curriculum (2018) on which this textbook is based, each unit of the Library Publishing Curriculum contained an instructor’s guide, narrative, a slideshow with talking notes, bibliographies, supplemental material, and activities for use in a physical or virtual classroom for workshops and courses. This textbook version, produced in 2021, adapts the original narrative as the primary content (with very little additional editing) and incorporates the bibliographies, appendices, and images from the slideshow into a linear reading and learning experience for use by librarians or students learning on their own or as part of a classroom learning experience. …

Awareness And Acceptance Of Emerging Technologies For Extended Information Service Delivery In Academic Libraries In Nigeria, Williams Torubo Saibakumo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Expanding and modernising information services are crucial to the continual existence and patronage of academic libraries in the digital era. Technological evolutions have impelled libraries to incorporate all-encompassing, user-friendly and technology-driven service delivery approaches in academic libraries. Emerging technologies seem to fill this perceived gap. This study brings to light the level of awareness, adoption, preferred and readiness for the incorporation of emerging technologies into academic libraries activities in Nigeria. Amid 18 emerging technologies, adoption is stumpy, only an infinitesimal number (WebOPAC, library website, Cybrary, social media and Institutional repository) considered, and awareness remained high. Technologies like RFID, Integrated Library …
