In order to increase the value and discoverability of their metadata, libraries explore options for making that data available and useful outside of the data silo of the library world through the adoption of Linked Data and Linked Open Data (LOD). OCLC Research conducted its 2018 International Linked Data Survey for Implementers. Results showed that 41% of the linked data projects/services described in 2018 were reported as using Wikidata as a source they consumed. In addition, recent development in RDA and BIBFRAME, which are better positioned for Linked Data applications, is a typical example of libraries’ involvement. A group of …

Since the Chinese American Librarians Association’s Academic Resources and Repository System (CALASYS, https://ir.cala-web.org/) was initiated in 2013, its collections have grown gradually by way of the Committee’s curation and entries with occasional help from LIS students. In order to resolve the bottleneck problems, promote CALASYS and expand its content, the 2020-2021 CALASYS Committee has strongly pursued the idea of opening CALASYS to all of the CALA members. When the William & Mary Law School Equity and Inclusion Exhibits Committee decided to begin hosting a series of physical exhibits with online components, the Wolf Law Library staff eagerly offered the scholarship repository as the best place to house the online exhibits collection. In late February, the library launched the first digital exhibit, “Black History at W&M Law.” In this talk, Linda will discuss the repository structure and format W&M chose, how different material was integrated into the collection, and give some insight into what worked and what didn’t.

Funded by a National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) Humanities Collections and Reference Resources Foundations Grant, the UA Little Rock Center for Arkansas History and Culture’s “Mapping Renewal” pilot project focused on creating access to and providing spatial context to archival materials related to racial segregation and urban renewal in the city of Little Rock, Arkansas, from 1954-1989. An unplanned interdisciplinary collaboration with the UA Little Rock Arkansas Economic Development Institute (AEDI) has proven to be an invaluable partnership. Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) contain domain knowledge that can be used for many digital library tasks, such as analyzing citation networks and predicting research trends. Automatic metadata extraction is important to build scalable digital library search engines. Most existing methods are designed for born-digital documents, so they often fail to extract metadata from scanned documents such as ETDs. Traditional sequence tagging methods mainly rely on text-based features. In this paper, we propose a conditional random field (CRF) model that combines text-based and visual features. Archival materials can often be found in cultural heritage organizations that do not have trained special collections catalogers on staff. In this workshop, participants will learn how to catalog manuscripts, photographs, and audiovisual materials so they can be discovered in online catalogs and databases. Both item and collection-level cataloging will be discussed and participants will learn when and how to apply metadata standards like RDA and DACS. Time for hands-on practice will be included.

Beginning in March of 2020, Mary Miller and Kathleen Carter coordinated the work of over 100 University of Georgia Libraries students, faculty, and staff on remote metadata projects for the Brown Media Archives. The great majority of these UGA employees were not catalogers, were not familiar with metadata concepts, and had never visited the Brown Media Archives. Yet, in a four-month period, they successfully completed a quantity of work that would have taken Brown Media two and a half years to accomplish at regular staffing levels. With our IT department preparing to upgrade the University of Georgia’s Alexander Campbell King Law Library (UGA Law Library) website from Drupal 7 to 8 this fall, a web developer, an archivist, and a librarian teamed up a year ago to make plans for preserving thousands of born-digital images. We wanted to harvest photographs housed only in web-based photo galleries on the law school website and import them into our repository’s collection. The problem? There were five types of online photo galleries, and our current repository did not include appropriate categories for all of the photographs. The solution? Expand our …

Freed Faces, Our Past Americans: Collaborations To Create, Digitize And Describe The “Former Slaves In Freedom” Collection, Gayle Porter

Collaborative Librarianship

The Chicago State University (CSU) Archives collaborated with the International Society of Sons and Daughters of Slave Ancestry (ISDSA), a Chicago-based lineage society, to digitize, describe, and make accessible online a collection of 359 private historic photographs of formerly enslaved African Americans, and 90+ brief family histories, submitted by descendants. This case study describes the benefits, processes, and challenges of this unique, unfinished collaborative project. The study also describes: 1. Creative, flexible approaches to collaborative digital projects by an academic institution and a community organization; 2. Balancing cataloging/metadata standards while respecting a curator’s goals for the collection.
